"There was blood everywhere." Five injured in horror axe attack at German train station.

A man has been arrested after injuring five people with an axe at Duesseldorf’s main train station, police say, correcting earlier reports of two people being detained.

A spokesman said one of those attacked on Thursday night was seriously injured and the alleged attacker was also hurt.

After witnessing the attack, a station attendant described the events to German news site Bild

“We were standing on the track, waiting for the train. The train came, and suddenly someone jumped out with an axe, hit the people,” he said.

“There was blood everywhere. I have experienced a lot, but I have never experienced this.”

He said police were investigating whether more attackers had been involved but had no indication of that.

“We are not using the words ‘rampage’ or ‘terror’,” the spokesman said.

He said there was no serious threat of further attacks and the station remained shut down.

Earlier, a spokesman for federal police, who are usually in charge of policing train stations, had said two people were arrested and further attackers might be on the run.
