Julie Corey is on trial for killing her pregnant friend and stealing her fetus.

Corey, Dion and the baby girl.

Five years ago, 39-year-old Julie Corey told her ex boyfriend Alex Dion that she was pregnant and that the child was his.

Later that year, Corey again contacted Dion and told him that her waters had broken and that she was heading to the hospital.

Soon after, she introduced Dion to their little baby girl…. But some parts of Corey’s story just didn’t add up.

According to records, Corey had told Dion that her labour had lasted 20 minutes and that she’d gone home from the hospital just five hours later. Corey reportedly told Dion she left because nurses weren’t giving her the care she needed.

It’s also been reported that Dion noticed the baby girl was quite small and that her umbilical chord was still attached and that it had been tied with a ribbon. The baby didn’t look like she had been delivered safely in a hospital, under the care of professionally trained dstaff.

This week, a woman from the American state of Massachusetts stands accused of beating her pregnant friend to death and removing the unborn baby from her womb. She is facing a trial by jury.  That woman is Julie Corey.

It’s alleged that Corey was not actually in labour on the night she told Dion she went to hospital to give birth. It’s believed that she was actually at the house of 23-year-old Darlene Haynes. And it’s alleged that on that day, Corey murdered Haynes, cut a 9-inch incision in her abdomen and extracted the 1.8kg baby from her womb.

The body of Darlene Haynes was found in her apartment a few days later. The body was so badly decomposed that it took an autopsy for authorities to discover she had been pregnant.

A few days after Haynes’ body was discovered, Corey, Dion and a baby girl were found at a homeless shelter in the US state of New Hampshire. DNA has evidence revealed that the baby did in fact belong to Haynes.

Corey in court.

Corey has spent the last five years in prison, awaiting her trial. She will plead not guilty to kidnapping and murder charges. Prosecutors will argue that Corey was pregnant and attended prenatal classes with Haynes but that she miscarried in April 2009 and pretended to still be pregnant.

The defence will argue that there is no evidence linking Corey to Hayne’s murder. They will argue that police missed vital pieces of evidence in this case – such as the fact that Hayne’s ex partner Roberto Rodriguez was a violent man – and that Corey came into possession of the baby ‘by lawful means.’

So what happened to Darlene Hayes’ baby? The now four-year-old girl is reportedly living with her biological father, 28-year-old Roberto Rodriguez.

The trial continues and we’ll update this post as more information comes to light.
