This is the very definition of the most failed wedding proposal ever.

It’s all fun and games until you get swept out to sea.

Eric Barretto had planned the perfect proposal for his girlfriend, Jennilyn Buenaventura Garcia, a sunset engagement in a hot air balloon.

Perfect right?

Well before you start gushing, it all went wrong. Horribly. Wrong.

You see, the hot air balloon veered off its course on the Californian coastline and headed out to sea instead.

Eric told TODAY, "My fiance and I were getting engaged up there and the next thing you know the balloon was veering off toward the water, and we couldn't get our way back to land."

Their pilot attempted to steer them back on course, but Eric added that the "air up there was so stagnant,” which left them with no choice but to land in the water below. Luckily, it was only shallow.

"It was unforgettable, that's all I have to say. I don't know if we'll do it again," Eric explained.

Neither would we Eric, neither would we.

The only thing that could make this proposal worse, is if the engagement ring looked like one of these...
