I went to see Sex & The City and I wore a tracksuit.

Yes, I did. I somehow feel this is a betrayal of Carrie but it was the middle of the day and have I mentioned I’m pregnant so I’m going to use that as my excuse.
Anyway.
I’m not going to spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it. Run, I say, run.

However, one other thing I will say is that you’ve got to love a movie in which our heroine wears 81 DIFFERENT OUTFITS. All of which are perfection.
Last week, when the movie came out, I did a lot of radio interviews about why SATC is such a phenomenon. These were the reasons I gave, feel free to add your own:

1. SATC was ground-breaking in that it brought women’s magazines to life. All the stuff women talk about together in private and which had never been featured in mainstream media outside the confines of Cosmo, Cleo etc….. that girl-talk mix of sex, relationships, fashion, career and self-help. How refreshing it was – and how delightful it still is – to see that reflected so accurately on TV.

2. At it’s core, SATC was not about sex or shoes. It was about female
friendship. In all its complexity. There are so many movies and TV
shows that celebrate male friendship – from Hogan’s Heroes to Frasier,
MASH to Seinfeld.
But apart from The Golden Girls, SATC was
ground-breaking in that it was the first show I can recall that so
beautifully captured the intensity of the friendships we have with
other women. We love each other, shit each other, console each other,
support each other, fall out, fall back in and cheer each other through
every significant moment.
Without giving anything away, you know the
thing that made me cry in the movie? In THAT dramatic street scene, it
was the expression on Charlotte’s face. To me it so perfectly captured
the essence of what it feels like to love a friend so much that you
want to protect her from all bad things and kill anyone who hurts her.
That to me is what SATC gave us. A true depiction of female friendship.

3. How bloody refreshing was it – is it – to see GROWN-UP women as the focus of a TV series and now a movie? There have always been plenty of TV shows and films about teens and hot twenty-somethings. From 90210 to Melrose, Gossip Girl, The OC, The Simple Life, Dawson’s Creek, Felicity…..That ground is well covered and always will be. But a show about women in their 30s and 40s? With issues like breast cancer, infertility, impotence, menopause, Botox…..and the fact that the actresses are all over 40 – Kim Catrall is actually 51 – and they’re playing the central characters of a movie (not cast as Lindsay Lohan’s or Mischa Barton’s mother)_….now THAT is worth going to the movies for.
