"I got really under a cloud": Drew Barrymore on postnatal depression.

She’s the mother of two daughters now.

After Drew Barrymore, 40, gave birth to her first child Olive, now three, she was over the moon.

Her life with her new baby and her husband, art consultant Will Kopelman, 38, was filled with the joy of a new baby and parenthood.

She couldn’t understand postpartum depression at all — how could anyone not be happy after such an event?

Following the birth of her second daughter, Frankie, 18 months, though, she began to comprehend the condition.

“I didn’t have postpartum the first time so I didn’t understand it because I was like, ‘I feel great’!” she told People.

“The second time, I was like, ‘Oh, whoa, I see what people talk about now. I understand.’ It’s a different type of overwhelming with the second. I really got under the cloud.”

Barrymore felt overwhelmed by the pressures of being a mother to two kids as well as trying to balance her family life with her work.

“I just got right on the idea of, where do I need to be the most? Fifty-fifty would be ideal but life doesn’t work like that. Life is messy,” she told People.

Barrymore went through it for about six months and came out the other side to live a happy life with her family that’s “perfect and totally imperfect.”

She’s not the only actress to open up about postpartum depression recently, with Hayden Panettiere and Gwyneth Paltrow both speaking publicly about the sufferings after giving birth.
