13 DIY Beauty Tips from the bloggers who know

We asked some of our favourite beauty bloggers to share their best-ever, cheap, easy beauty tips.

Apple Cider Vinegar + Cold Water = Hair Shine Enhancer

“I pour apple cider vinegar on my hair once a month, then follow with a cold water rinse,” says Lianne Farbes of The Makeup Girl. “It has to be cold. This gets rid of product buildup and leaves my hair super shiny!”

Lemon = Nail Strengthener

“Acrylics will always leave you with dry, brittle nails,” says Ty Alexander of Gorgeous in Grey. “Strengthen your nails by cutting a lemon in two, then inserting your fingers inside the pulp so that all nails are fully covered by the lemon. Let them sit for 10 minutes, then remove them and, voilà, healthy nails.”

Used Matches = Killer Smoky Eyes

“Find a matchbook, then light and blow out a match,” advises Nadine Jolie of Nadine Jolie. After it’s cooled, “the charcoal tip makes an excellent kohl eyeliner and creates a smoky look everyone will think came courtesy of a department store product.”

Salicylic Acid = Flawless Tan

“I use a body wash that contains salicylic acid before applying self-tanner,” says Jamie Stone of Queen of the Quarter Life Crisis. “It naturally exfoliates the skin, and exfoliating before you apply self-tanner makes the product go on smoother and last longer. Win-win! Look for the magic ingredient, people.

Hydrogen Peroxide = Grey Hair Brightener

“Heat can cause grey hair to become dull and yellow,” says Ty Alexander of Gorgeous in Grey. To revive your hue, “mix equal parts of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, water and your favorite conditioner in a spray bottle, then spritz the mixture on clean, damp, non-conditioned hair. Comb it through with a wide-toothed comb and leave on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing. Repeat once a week to prevent buildup and you’ll be gorgeous in grey!”

Coral Lipstick + Concealer = Dark Circle Eraser

Fighting with dark under-eye circles? “Just a tiny touch of orange lipstick or orangey cream blush mixed with concealer will counteract purple darkness under the eyes,” reveals Lauren Dimet Waters of Second City Style.

Ice Water = Nail Polish Setter

“After giving yourself a manicure, dip your wet nails into a bowl of ice cold water and leave them submerged for about three minutes,” says Jeannine Morris of Beauty Sweet Spot. They’ll come out dry, smooth and glossy!

Epsom Salts + Essential Oils = Custom Foot Soak

“I can wear heels, up to 4.5 inches, all day long if I know an aromatic tub of Epsom salts is awaiting me at the end of the day,” says Julia DiNardo of Fashion Pulse Daily. “Buy Epsom salts in bulk, dump them into a container and mix in a few drops of your favorite essential oil (I’m big on scents of lavender, blood orange, or spiced fig). Then you just pour a healthy amount of it into the bath (or footbath) when your feet need it!”

Vaseline + Perfume = Fragrance Extender

Got a scent you love but hate how quickly it evaporates? “Apply some Vaseline apres-spritz to fight fragrance fade,” advises Amber Katz of Rouge 18.

Toilet Seat Covers = Blotting Papers

“If you’re at an event and your t-zone is beginning to resemble the Exxon Valdez, you can mimic the effect of blotting papers with a toilet seat cover,” says Nadine Jolie of Nadine Jolie. “It might sound gross, but it works flawlessly to fight shine!”

Coffee + Conditioner = Brunette Color Booster

“Since I’m iffy about chemical and permanent dyes, I like to tune up my hair by adding real coffee to my shampoo and conditioner,” says Bryce Gruber of The Luxury Spot. “I add a teaspoon of freeze-dried grounds to about a tablespoon of shampoo or conditioner, mix until dissolved, and then let it sit on my hair for about five minutes before rinsing. It turns up the mocha-brown factor in my hair for a few solid days, it’s safe, and it smells amazing!”

Flatiron = Fabric Wrinkle Releaser

“When I’m traveling and my clothes get wrinkled in my bag, I ‘iron’ them with my small travel flatiron!” says Aly Walansky of A Little Alytude. “I love this trick so much I even once made a silly YouTube video about it.”

Olive Oil = Makeup Remover

“Maybe it’s the Italian in me, but olive oil is the end-all-be-all of everything,” says Julia DiNardo of Fashion Pulse Daily. “I use the same bottle that I cook with to remove makeup! It’s a natural (and delicious) way to remove long-wear lipstick and lip stains: Just dab some onto a Q-tip and move it around your lips until it’s all gone.”
