An earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea prompting alert of 'possible' tsunami.

An earthquake measuring 8.0 magnitude has hit Bougainville island in Papua New Guinea, 47kms west of the country’s capital Arawa, the United States Geological Survey reports.

An alert is in place for a ‘possible’ tsunami along the coasts of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Nauru, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Vanuatu, Chuuk and Indonesia for the next three hours, according to The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

An official tsunami warning has not been issued, and if there are waves as a result of the earthquake, they’re not predicted to be significantly above tide level.

There do not appear to be any immediate casualties.

Reuters report The Bureau of Meteorology have confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Australia.

More to come.
