There’s something glorious about ageing.

Sure, we worry about our faces changing and frequently catch ourselves stumbling through uncertain life changes, but for most of us there’s a sense of excitement that comes from entering a new decade.

We grow into the women we were meant to be and say goodbye to bad life choices (glitter hairspray and iridescent eye shadow, anyone?) and with every birthday comes the chance to be a new person.

So, how do we make our inner evolution known to the world and properly celebrate moving into a new life phase?

Through clothes and shopping, of course.

According to David Jones Classic Collection Design Manager Lynn DeVilliers, dressing for your age has nothing to do with saying goodbye to your favourite clothes and everything to do with embracing new looks.

Fashion is something to be enjoyed, whatever age you may be,” she said. “The key is to ensure the garment fits well.

“It’s also important that it is suited to your figure, is easy to put together and that your building blocks are versatile enough to be updated with key seasonal trend items that appeal to you.

“In your 20s, it’s all about freedom of expression. You can mix prints, patterns and silhouettes together, the options are limitless. Festival looks, denim and ultra pretty fem tops are key for this season.

“Experimentation and layering are key to making the look your own. David Jones Classic Collection offers a multitude of prints and silhouettes, and gives a nod to season relevant trends.”

So, that’s your 20s taken care of. But what about your 30s?

Traditionally, this is a time fraught with struggle and a sense of hesitation. You say goodbye to your 20s, a decade you longed for throughout your teen years, and suddenly find yourself starring squarely down the barrel of adulthood.

“30s fashion is driven by confident style,” Lynn said. “Wear the clothing simply and well put together in a chic way.

“Clothing makes us feel good so we can put our best foot forward and be taken seriously.

“David Jones Classic Collection’s fits are worked on by a dedicated team of technologists to ensure the perfect fit. The quality and fabric used is key in ensuring that you always look and feel your best.”

When it comes to dressing up in your 40s, there are no hard-and-fast rules.

In fact, if there’s ever a time to embrace your style and kick things up a level in the glamour stakes, it’s when you say goodbye to your 30s.

Right now, the red carpets of Hollywood are filled with women in their 40s who are not afraid to push the fashion envelope.

Cate Blanchett, Sofia Vergara, Jennifer Aniston, Cameron Diaz and Tina Fey (just to name a few) are showing us how your 40s really look and, from a style perspective, they look pretty damn good.

“When women reach their 40s and beyond, they want to look great – but without the fuss,” Lynn said. “David Jones Classic Collection is a comprehensive offer comprising timeless pieces in a way that balances dominant seasonal trends with wardrobe solution.”

“At the end of the day, style choices should be personality driven, rather than essentially age driven.

“We work with fits that suit most body shapes to flatter and offer comfort. The David Jones Classic Collection offers a great base of wardrobe essentials.

“Things like beautiful sculpted denims with extra stretch and smooth fit.  Casual pants for weekends in a more trendy skinny fit to more relaxed pants for leisure living.  Formal pants offer a smart no fuss work solution in varying leg shapes to your shape.

“Blouses and tops are offered in both basic colour, on trend colour or beautiful prints – a good way to give dimension and pop to an existing wardrobe.”

The lesson to be learned here is that you should wear what makes you feel good. Experiment with colour, styles and looks and use your age to push boundaries.

With age comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes great style.

What will you be wearing each decade?
