Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have been executed.

We send our love and thoughts to their families and loved ones.

We are deeply sad that Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have been executed by the Indonesian Government overnight. Along with Andrew and Myuran, six others were also executed.

Andrew and Myuran committed serious crimes, and they ought to have faced serious consequences for them.

Capital punishment is always wrong. It does not offer justice. It merely causes suffering to those left behind. It is nothing short of state sponsored murder.

Andrew and Myuran showed remarkable rehabilitation over the past decade. They would have offered so much in life; an example, an inspiration, a display of what remorse and reparation can truly achieve. They offered art, through Myuran’s paintings and they offered spiritual guidance, through Andrew’s ordination as a pastor. The world will not know their potential.

We send our love and sympathy to Andrew and Myuran’s families and loved ones. While we can never understand the depth of their loss, we mourn with them and we hope that the love and support of the community will offer them some small consolation.

In the end, we reflect that life is fleeting and that the decisions made in the moment can alter the course of history. We reach for hope, and we stand for mercy. Because now that is all there is left to do.
