One man speaks out: "We are responsible for the vast majority of violence."

Trigger Warning: This post deals with issues of domestic violence and may be triggering for survivors of abuse.

This man is Jeremy Loveday. And he has a challenge for all men.

In this moving performance piece, he asks men to start claiming domestic violence as a men’s issue. Because, as he says, “we are responsible for the vast majority of violence.”

This passage needs to be shared everywhere:

What was she wearing? Was she walking alone? She shouldn’t have drank so much. She should have been more careful. She shouldn’t have– she should have– she. Like it was her fault. Like gender violence isn’t a man’s issue. Like men can’t help themselves. Like the responsibility for one’s own actions doesn’t fall on one’s own shoulders. Like men don’t have the power to change how men act.

If you believe you may be an abusive partner, you can receive help via Relationships Australia on 1300 364 277. If you have experienced, or are at risk of domestic violence or sexual assault, you can receive help by calling 1800 RESPECT – 1800 737 732. If you are in immediate danger please call the police on 000.

Mamamia acknowledges that violence against men is an issue that needs to be addressed, and thinks that violence – committed by any gender, against any gender – is wrong. Please keep your comments on this post respectful. For another performance piece regarding sexual violence against men, please see: The video that stopped the internet in its tracks.

Do you agree that domestic violence should stop being framed as a ‘women’s issue’?

Yes, men cause most violence. Men are also statistically the biggest victims of violence. The message lately seems to be 'men are violent while women are the end victims'. Um, no, many many men have never been violent but have been the victims of violence themselves. i am one of them, having never hit anyone but have been hospitalised due to an unprovoked gang attack. My pain was no different because of my gender.

While there is no doubt that the behaviour of a minority of men needs to change, the behaviour of these dickheads affects both women as well as the majority of men who are not violent. Further more, while representing a minority, do not be ignoring the very real issue of violent females at the same time.

I would think men and women can be violent. Men cause more damage ,mainly to men.

Behaviour of a minority? Deep down this country still accepts domestic violence, it is an entrenched, accepted cultural attitude that is downplayed by the media at large. Every week a woman is killed by a current or former partner and it's highly likely that these perpetrators have had violence done to them by another man. I'm sorry you were attacked Anon.

Do you seriously think a majority of men are violent? That is very sad. Oh, and every fortnight a male is killed by a partner. That statistic is never ever quoted though.

If there were very few men being violent we wouldn't seeing such high levels of family violence, it's going UP not down.
