The 6 big trends we'll be wearing this winter, according to David Jones.

As we sweat and drip our way through the last scorching month of summer, the fashion overlords have already determined what we’ll be hanging in our wardrobes come the cool seasons.

Last night the David Jones Autumn Winter Fashion launch kicked off in front of Sydney’s St Mary’s Cathedral (and a fairly holy front row consisting of Lara Worthington et al).

In a show featuring David Jones ambassadors Jesinta Franklin and Jessica Gomes, plus US supermodel Karlie Kloss, we were schooled on the trends of the coming season, here are the dominant six.

1. Ruffles.

A little bit Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Puffy Shirt’, a little bit pirate, a lot of fun, ruffles are making a triumphant return to our closets. Farewell sleek straight lines.

Rather than cutesy, they’ve been adapted into work-appropriate shirts and skirts.

2. Bell sleeves.

Last year’s bell sleeve domination has no signs of slowing down.

This winter, it’ll be about flouncy varieties with a ruffled or lace twist.

3. Unpack the Christmas colours.

We all know autumn and winter get ripped off when it comes to exciting colour schemes. Black, white, grey and more grey are the tired old shades, so it’s nice to see some punchy red and dazzling greens make the mix this year.

4. Bold florals.

No cute, girlie florals to be seen here, friends. Winter will see a crop of ballsy florals hit the racks, set against dark backgrounds or blown up to larger-than-life proportions.

5. Velvet.

Velvet. It welcomed itself shyly into the fashion circle last year, and now it's feeling confident enough to let its true, uh, texture shine through. Jackets, dresses, skirts, pants - you'll be seeing plenty with a touch of velvet this year.

6. Sleek hair.

It's not technically a fashion trend per say, but straight hair that shone as brightly as Jesinta Campbell's teeth stood out on last night's runway.

Aveda’s Creative Director for David Jones, Terri Robertson-Kirkwood, said it's a look we'll be seeing more of this season:

"There's a very high-end defined inspiration behind the hair this season, the brief from David Jones, Creative Director Thelma McQuillan, was to take the hair to a couture level. So we have gone for a lot of shine and sheen at the crown of the head – which gives lustre and health. Then have finished with a matte texture at the ends of hair, keeping the look current for the season.” (Post continues after gallery.)
