Country singer Joey Feek celebrated with hometown service.

The world watched, heartbroken, as US country singer Joey Feek lost her battle with terminal cancer earlier this month.

Via husband Rory’s blog, ‘This Life I Live’, fans followed Joey’s journey, with Rory documenting their last moments together as a family.

Now he’s shared the details of her private memorial.
“Words were not enough to let her know how much she meant to me – how much she still means to me,” he wrote of the private service on their property.

Joey was buried at the property in Tennessee last Tuesday, with her body brought in by a horse-drawn carriage.

‘It was tearful, but it was optimistic, especially being on the dirt,’ said Bill Gaither.

‘She was part of the earth. We all felt as though we were close to her. It was just a sweet Tennessee mountain moment. Very positive things were said at the gravesite,’ said Gaither.

On Sunday Joey’s hometown of Alexandria, Indiana gathered at her high school to remember the singer.

The public memorial was held on Sunday March 13 in the auditorium of Alexandria-Monroe high school, where Joey Feek graduated almost twelve years ago.

The fans arrived with signs and photos of Joey, and heard from Joey’s mother, husband Rory, and their pastor, Jerry Young.

“She was always excelling at everything she put her mind to,” said family friend Bill Gaither during the service, “And made this town a brighter place with her smile and light.”

Rory – the other half of their musical duo ‘Joey + Rory ‘ – attended the service in his customary overalls and white shirt, carrying baby Indiana.  Along with Gaither, he performed one of Joey’s favourite songs, ‘Lean On Me’. At the end of the service, Rory said, “Joey, I’ll see you at the house.”
