John Legend sticks up for new mum Chrissy Teigen: "Funny there's no dad-shaming."

John Legend and Chrissy Teigen had a baby just weeks ago, a little girl named Luna Simone.

Chrissy was quickly welcomed into the new mums club through our standard initiation procedures; we commented on her birth choices, inquired into her feeding practices and noted her post baby body.

bath time is tooooo cute! my heart, it hurts.

Chrissy Teigen passed her final initiation quite quickly, when we shamed her for daring to go out to dinner with her partner.

Welcome Chrissy. We’re delighted to have you join us. The new mums club is a dangerous place of shame and judgement served up through a thin veneer of support and solidarity. But you’ve probably figured that out by now.

You’ll get slapped around on Twitter and Instagram for cooking your Mother’s Day breakfast in a crop top. You’ll be questioned for snap-chatting while breastfeeding. And probably next week, someone somewhere will have something to say about the fact that you’re going back to work (ALL POWER TO YOU, by the way)

That said, it’s nice to see John Legend beautifully pointing out the double standard, in this kick arse Facebook post.

How many of us have been asked where our children are while we are out socialising? How many of us have been questioned about our childcare arrangements in job interviews? How many of us have been made to feel guilty for both “over-parenting” and “neglecting” our children at the same time?

About half of the parenting population, is my guess; the half that possess two x chromosomes.

As for Chrissy Teigen, this is the woman who was so beautiful and honest about her birth and post birth experiences. This is the woman who tweeted: “no one told me i would be coming home in diapers too.”

My hope is that Chrissy Teigen’s membership of the new mums club isn’t so bad that it stops her from sharing real life and real motherhood. In the meantime, I think she deserves the last word.
