1. ‘She was crying and shaking’: Service station worker describes kidnapped British backpacker’s fear.

A service station worker has described how a young woman’s fear alerted her that something was wrong before she was rescued from a suspected two-month long ordeal where she was allegedly held captive, raped and assaulted by her partner.

Speaking to News Corp Australia, Beverley Page said the 22-year-old woman was “really upset” when she couldn’t pay for her fuel on Sunday in Mitchell, Queensland.

“The girl was crying at the time and our person told her to just go outside and have another look for her wallet and take a deep breath and come back in,” Page said.

“When she was in the shop, she was crying and shaking the whole time – she was really upset. There were two marks on her neck along with the black eyes.”

When the woman spoke about her ex-boyfriend, and alleged he was the one who had given her the black eyes, Page offered to call the police.

The woman refused and drove off.

Page then followed in her car and alerted police. The terrified British backpacker was rescued after officers pulled over her vehicle on the Warrego Highway.

She was suffering from facial fractures, and had bruising and scratching across her neck.

Police have since charged a 22-year-old man – who was found hiding in a storage section of the car – with more than 20 offences in relation to the woman’s ordeal.

It is believed the pair were known to each other before setting out on the road trip, with their relationship soon taking a “dark turn”.

“By her account, [the relationship] has soured to the point that while they were travelling around she has tried to leave but was held against her will. She has shown police a number of injuries she has sustained,” Detective Inspector Paul Hart said.

A four-year-old endangered white rhino has been killed by poachers at Thoiry Zoo in France, BBC News reports.

The zoo’s keepers found the rhino, named Vince, dead on Tuesday morning. He had been shot three times in the head by poachers who had forced their way into the zoo.

One of his horns had been hacked off with a chainsaw.

Vince’s death is believed to be the first time poachers have targeted an animal living in a European zoo. The African rhino’s horns can be worth as much as $60,000 per kilo.

About 100 rhinos are killed in the wild every month.

The zoo is home to two other white rhinos – 37-year-old Gracie and five-year-old Bruno – both of which “escaped” the poachers.

3. Childcare worker caught on CCTV pushing four-year-old girl down the stairs.

A US childcare worker is facing charges after she was caught on security footage pushing a four-year-old girl down a set of stairs, ABC 6 reports.

The horrific incident occurred at a Delaware daycare centre last Friday.

Sarah Gable, 52, pushed the little girl down a flight of steps and a camera – which had been installed just half an hour before the incident – captured it all on tape.

The video shows Gable pushing the girl from behind, causing her to fall down approximately six steps. Gable then notices that the camera has recorded her actions.

Police were called when the childcare centre’s owner discovered the video, and Gable was immediately fired from her position.

“I was so upset. It just hurt me. We don’t treat children here like that,” daycare centre administrator Shawayne Taveres said.

“It was like, ‘Why would you do that? Why would you push a child down the steps?’ And the way she did it was just so carelessly.”

The 52-year-old now faces charges of simple assault, harassment and endangering the welfare of the child.

Police were called to the Glenwood home at around 4:20pm yesterday after the son called the police. The 56-year-old woman was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police have since arrested and charged the woman’s 57-year-old husband with her murder.

“Police spoke with a family member, and as a result, a search began for a 57-year-old male, who police will allege is the husband of a deceased lady,” Detective Acting Superintendent Wayne Humphrey told the Daily Telegraph.

The Gidgegannup boy was found 25km away from his home after he played the game with his sibling last night.

The boy’s father alerted police at around 6pm when he couldn’t find his son on their property.

The five-year-old boy had hidden in the back of his mother’s car. Unaware of her secret passenger, she had driven 25km away to a cinema.

The boy was spotted in the back of the car in the car park an hour into the search, and he was reunited with his relieved parents.

It’s yet to be confirmed whether the boy will be crowned the world’s official hide-and-seek champion.

Two young girls are among five people who were injured by two dogs on the loose north of Newcastle in New South Wales, 7 News reports.

A 40-year-old woman was walking her own dog when the two dogs attacked her. She suffered a “significant injury” to her nose during the attack.

Donald McInnes, 38, and his two daughters – aged nine and 16 – rushed to her aid, but were also attacked by the dogs.

Another 24-year-old man tried to help but was also bitten.

“These two dogs just come out of nowhere and started attacking people,” witness Charles Boyd told 7 News.

All five victims were taken to hospital for treatment. It is understood the two dogs were captured in a nearby park and are being held by Maitland City Council.
