Huh? Bristol Palin now says her pregnancy was planned.

Update: Bristol Palin now says her pregnancy was planned. Huh?

Last week, Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol shared an extremely downbeat pregnancy announcement in which she used phrases like “a huge disappointment” and “trying my hardest to keep my chin up” (read more of that statement below).

This week, Bristol Palin has done an about-turn — declaring in a rather confusing new blog post that her pregnancy was “planned”.

This pregnancy was actually planned,” she wrote in the post, which was published on Sunday. “Everyone knows I wanted more kids, to have a bigger family.  Believing I was heading that way, I got ahead of myself. Things didn’t go as planned, but life keeps going,” she said.

“But I do not regret this baby. This baby is not a disappointment, and I cannot wait to be a mom times two.”

The devout Christian and devoted anti-choice campaigner then went on to repeat her views on abortion.

When I realized I was pregnant, I knew I would be completely crucified. But I never even thought of aborting this child, NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE,” she said.

“I am pregnant. This is not the ideal situation, but life is important even if it’s not in the most absolute ideal circumstance. This is more confirmation on what I’ve always stood for. I’ve always been pro-life and I am standing for life now.”

Right.

Bristol Palin, daughter of conservative US politician Sarah Palin, has just released announced her pregnancy in the most depressing way imaginable.

“I wanted you guys to be the first to know that I am pregnant,” she wrote in a blog post yesterday.

“Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one.”

The young woman, who made headlines in 2007 when she became pregnant with her first child, Tripp, at age 16, continued: “At the end of the day there’s nothing I can’t do with God by my side, and I know I am fully capable of handling anything that is put in front of me with dignity and grace.

“Life moves on no matter what.  So no matter how you feel, you get up, get dressed, show up, and never give up,” the 24-year-old blogger and reality TV personality said.

Palin — who launched an abstinence campaign after giving birth to Tripp in 2008 — went on to describe the pregnancy news as “tough” and “a huge disappointment”.

“When life gets tough, there is no other option but to get tougher,” she wrote.

“I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you. But please respect Tripp’s and my privacy during this time. I do not want any lectures and I do not want any sympathy.”

She concludes: “Tripp, this new baby, and I will all be fine, because God is merciful.”

It is not known who the father of the baby is, with Palin having recently split from fiance Dakota Meyer, whom she was originally set to wed on May 23.

Palin and Meyer became engaged in March after dating for several months.

So many things about Palin’s online announcement are sad.

The fact that she feels having an unplanned pregnancy makes her a “huge disappointment”.

The fact she’s clearly ashamed, seeking as she does God’s ‘mercy’ and anticipating her family and friends’ judgement.

And the fact that her position on abortion — staunchly anti-choice, as evidenced by having reposted news articles of that nature online — has apparently placed her in a position of resigning control over her reproductive decisions.

The unease and, well, even despair evident in her carefully chosen words make it clear that she does not want another child right now — yet she feels she must ‘tough it out’ as if her family size were a sentence imposed on her, rather than a choice.

We wish Bristol Palin all the best with her pregnancy and birth.

But we do wish she’d feel she had could control her own reproductive life without feeling shamed or judged.
