Fresh evidence in the JonBenet Ramsey points to a new suspect - and a confession.

It has been nearly 20 years since the body of JonBenet Ramsey was found inside her Colorado home the day after Christmas.

But it hasn’t stopped detectives and conspiracy theorists alike speculating about what happened to the little girl all those years ago.

A private investigator who was once hired by the parents of JonBenet Ramsey has told the Today Show in the US that he believes he knows who murdered the six-year-old.

Ollie Gray has continued to work on the case today without being paid due to a dogged belief that an electrician named Michael Helgoth was involved in the beauty queens murder.

“You have to look for something in order to find something, and unfortunately for this particular case, you had a totally inexperienced police agency,” he told TODAY.

“There are probably three or four people that should have been investigated earlier and still need to be investigated.”

Gray went on to tell the program that Helgoth is an important person of interest and that he believes a tape-recorded a confession of the murder is in the care of Helgoth's close friends and family. Gray says Helgoth was never properly investigated in the murder due to the fact he committed suicide just months after JonBenet's body was found.

“The latest development in this particular case as far as I’m concerned is Michael Helgoth. He was basically a hell raiser.

"I don't think Mike did all this by himself. I think there was more than one or two people involved," he said.

When the case was investigated in the immediate aftermath, suspicion lay initially with JonBenet's parents, Patsy and John Ramsey. In August 2006, American schoolteacher John Mark Karr was arrested in Thailand but was abruptly cleared and released on the basis of DNA testing.

Since then, there have been no strong leads in the case.

In February 2015, the former chief of the Boulder Police Department who was in charge of  investigating the death of six-year old Mark Beckner was the focus of an AskReddit session where he admitted the case was mishandled by police.

“It was the Christmas holiday and we were short staffed, we faced a situation as I said earlier that no one in the country had ever seen before or since, and there was confusion at the scene as people were arriving before we had enough personnel on the scene,” he wrote online.

Although police officially cleared JonBenet's parents and brother for any wrong-doing in 2008, conspiracy theorists still circulate ideas and beliefs that a member of the family was involved int he murder.

Today, JonBenet would be 25 years old.
