The lipstick colour proven to get you what you want.

While we all have a favourite colour (mine is currently NYX Matte Lipstick in ‘Indie Flick’, in case you were wondering), we choose certain lip shades for different reasons.

But have you ever thought about how other people interpret your lipstick choice? Whether you realise it or not, your lipstick colour sends people a certain message about you.

And according to a new study from P&G Beauty, whether you get what you want could directly depend on the lipstick shade you swiped on this morning.

Researchers showed 2,375 people images of nine different women wearing six different lipstick colours. The participants were then asked to make evaluations on the women’s personalities, rating how creative, professional and reliable they seemed.

The results

Your lipstick colour says a lot about you, apparently.

 

In general, the bolder, more "glamorous" lipstick colours tended to be associated with powerful traits, while more natural hues were associated with warmer personality traits.

“We looked into exactly what each lipstick colour demonstrates - something you can use to your advantage,” Sarah Vickery Ph.D lead researcher of the study said.

So, which colour is the best for world domination? Unsurprisingly, red. It looks powerful, and is associated with being daring and confident.

Job Interview

Yes, your dream job could very well be one lipstick application away.

For an interview, you want to come across as strong and confident, but not cocky. Vickery believes plum is the best colour, as its the most likely to make you look professional and ambitious, but still relatable. “It portrays confidence without making you appear inaccessible - a unique combination of power and warmth,” she says.

While scarlet red may come across as a little too racy for a first meeting, you don’t have to give up colour altogether. Study participants associated pink with looking sociable and fun-loving, which is exactly what you are, right?
