Ben wins Big Brother 2012

After more than three months on air, Channel Nine’s revival of Big Brother finally has a winner.

Bookies favourite, Ben Norris, the 32 year old accounts manager from Melbourne, was announced the winner of the Reality TV show during the finale last night. He beat fellow Melburnian, law student Estelle Landy, and Queensland beautician Layla Subritzky to the $250,000 prize money and brand new Holden Cruz, winning 40% of the public vote.

Ben celebrated his victory by proposing to his long-term boyfriend, also Ben, on national television. He had planned the proposal for whenever he left the house. He told News.com.au: “I thought it doesn't matter if I'm evicted in one week, I just want to be able to say in front of everyone in Australia that I love this person more than anything.”

The proposal was a tender moment in a season of the show that has tried to do things differently. Channel Nine relaunched Channel Ten's early 2000's hit this year with Sonia Kruger as host. In the aftermath of the ‘Turkey Slap’ incident that plagued the show’s original run, Channel Nine had vowed to keep the program family friendly and civil, by axing Big Brother Up Late and introducing a more diverse group of contestants.

While the latter became a distant memory (the show’s contestants were the usual mix of twenty-something singles), the former was much more successful. When popular contestant Josh Moore’s brother died suddenly, the cameras were turned off and he was allowed to exit the house in private.

Last night, Moore returned along with the rest of the cast to dance Gangnam Style for the finale’s opening. Watch the crazy antics here (the dance starts at 3:50.)

As for Ben and Ben, with $250,000 in their bank account it’s sure to be a killer wedding.
