It's really not looking good for Ben Affleck.

We didn’t want to believe it.

We’re still erring on the side of not believing it.

But things are not looking good for Ben Affleck on the nanny front.

No idea what we’re talking about? Well, good, if you want to keep Ben – wonderful beardy, Argo-directing, doting dad, Gone Girl-starring, Matt Damon-bestie, working-class-man-done-good Ben – bathed in glowing light in your heart, it might be best to look away now.

Because ever since he and Jen Garner announced that they were divorcing, the American tabloids have been overflowing with rumours about why, and the same one keeps coming back – IT WAS THE NANNY.

We’ve been pushing them away – tabloids need stories, after all – but now, now…

Pictures of Ben meeting up with Christine Ouzounian (The Nanny), at night, to apparently exchange a bottle of champagne do not make it easy to keep our Ben fantasies intact.

Is there an innocent reason why a beaming man might might be meeting up with the former nanny, two weeks after she was fired, to get a bottle of fancy booze?

Maybe to give her a hand-written reference? Maybe to thank her for her service?

Perhaps they randomly bumped into each other and decided to exchange booze?

Maybe the Internet was down across LA and he couldn’t transfer her final payment?

Or maybe, just maybe to be screwed over in a staged paparazzi photo-op? Hmmm.

Persistent reports that Christine is staying at the very fancy Hotel Bel-Air – one of Ben’s regular haunts – and that he is footing the bill are also not helping.

While Ben’s reps were quick to deny the affair, they are silent on questions of who’s paying those hefty hotel bills.

Either way, we know it’s none of our business, and we know that Jennifer Garner’s pain is private, and we know there are real-life kids involved.

But, but… BEN. How very could you?
