‘Battered Barbie’ joins war on domestic violence

A Barbie Doll covered in bruises and blood is being used as part of an art exhibition in the UK to raise awareness for domestic abuse. Sam Humphries has painted the Barbies, which have shocked audiences worldwide, with bleeding mouths and bruised faces for a display called ‘Speaking Out’ which looks into violence against women in art. Ms Humphries has said that ‘the dolls are part of a project demonstrating how reality actually is and that life isn’t perfect.’

12-year-old child bride’s father charged

Police have charged the father of the 12-year-old girl who was married in the Hunter Valley under his supervision to a 26-year-old university student. The 61-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon  and charged with accessory before the fact of sexual intercourse with a child aged 10-14 and also for procuring a child under the age of 14 for unlawful sexual activity. He will appear in court on Wednesday and has refused bail.

Driver faces court over school-side death

The female driver who reversed her car into Akshaaye Revin as he walked with his cousins on their last day of school in Carlingford, Sydney on December 18 has been ordered to face court over the boy's death. The 46-year-old was doing a three-point-turn when the incident occurred and will front court on May 7 for negligent driving occasioning death and grievous bodily harm. Akshaaye had been walking with his mother and cousins Zoe (5) and Ellie (4)  whose pelvis was broken.

Taronga Zoo confesses to killing its animals

Just days after Copenhagen Zoo killed a giraffe and fed it to lions in front of a crowd, Taronga Zoo in Sydney have revealed that they too kill off animals each year. Last year the zoo killed  74 animals including a sheep with joint disease, a Himalayan mountain goat, an infant gibbon abandoned by its mother at birth and a rabbit.

Driver chased by police while wife gives birth

When police chased down a driver who failed to stop at a red light today they discovered that his wife was giving birth in the back seat. The driver, who was under the speed limit, pulled over at a hospital entrance and was bombarded by police who were shocked to find his wife and a newly born baby. Police congratulated the couple and decided not to punish him, considering the circumstances.
