Woman 'attacked with axe' at Melbourne shopping centre, man arrested

A woman has allegedly been struck multiple times with an axe at a major Melbourne shopping centre.

Police arrested a man and cordoned off shops around the scene at a business in the Fountain Gate shopping centre in Narre Warren, in Melbourne’s south-east.

Police believe the man and the woman are known to each other.

“We were called at 10:15am to a report of a woman, believed to be in her 30s, with upper body injuries,” an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

The woman was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

News of the attack spread quickly through the shopping centre with shocked customers fearing the woman had been killed.

“The story goes that someone got killed with an axe or something,” a cafe worker told AAP.

“People are just curious [and] shocked but many people going about their business,” Renee Eido said.

Businesses have been cordoned off while police investigate.
