Autumn trends cheatsheet: 7 things to buy right now.

The time to update your style for autumn is now.

Deciding what to buy and what to avoid at new season time can be tricky. Do you ‘invest’ in that silly trend you love, even though it may quickly become uncool?

Navigating the shelves of chunky knits, pretty prints, and cosy jackets come the cooler months requires more skill than Hollywood stylist Rachel Zoe at awards season time.

We’ve wrapped up the new trends to keep you ahead of the fashion pack, but are timeless enough to survive your next Keep/Store/Toss session. Consider it your autumn fashion cheatsheet.

Just as an FYI, you should know that this post is sponsored by Clearly. But all opinions expressed by the author are 100% authentic and written in their own words.

1. Pink.

Adding pink to your wardrobe is a no-brainer way to inject some femininity into your existing wardrobe, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you mean you have to go for girly barbie-pink.

Powder pink and peachy toned coats will be a hot commodity this year, and if you’re picturing Pink Panther right now, consider adding a less risky item like a blouse to your wardrobe. Wear your pink with animal print or bright florals to really make it pop.

2. Flats/Sneakers.

Transitioning from wearing thongs all summer to proper footwear isn’t going to be nearly as hard this year. Flat sandals and sneakers are definitely having a moment. Huzzah! It’s the flatform and sports-influenced sneaker styles from Nike and New Balance that are the most popular.

3. Head-to-toe white.

Not the most practical shade if you are a) a mother or b) drink green smoothies or c) often spill lunch on yourself. To ensure your outfit feels less Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, look to crisp creams and textured whites.

Rock some new specs this Autumn.

4. New specs.

If you’re lucky enough to wear specs (and I’m not being sarcastic) changing them up is one of the easiest style changes you can make. And now thanks to retailers like clearly.com.au you don’t have to spend the equivalent of a Sydney mortgage on a new pair. If you usually have dark frames, try a coloured or patterned frame for the cooler months.

5. Longline shorts.

Finally, it’s time to pack away the bottom skimming denim cutoffs in favour of a longer hemline. This season pleat-front shorts and culottes are in fashion, and they’re a great work-friendly option for those high humidity days. Wear them with stripe tops, blouses, and blazers, and a chunky loafer style heel to keep it corporate.

6. Fine bracelets.

After seasons of arm candy and arm parties, the jewellery to wear around your wrists now is the superfine, barely-there styles. Go for the colour – rose gold, yellow gold or silver – that suits your skin tone best: rose gold and silver on paler tones and gold for more olive complexions.

7. Leather.

If there’s one takeaway from the recent Myer and David Jones fashion shows, it’s leather, leather and more leather. The most prominent styles were biker jackets and pants, but given these will quickly date look for leather trimmed dresses and tees.
