1. Australian mother of five dies in luxury Bali villa after consuming ‘more than a whole bottle of vodka’.

Bali police are investigating the death of a 38-year-old Queensland woman at a luxury seaside villa in Bali, saying they suspect she had consumed more than a whole bottle of vodka.

Summa Jean Simmonds – a mother of five – and her two friends, aged 46 and 20, were drinking at Peppers in the popular tourist town of Seminyak on Sunday evening, the Daily Telegraph reports.

According to police she consumed a “whole bottle of vodka” – or around 21 drinks – before having six more shots later in the evening.

When the 38-year-old went to her villa to get money so she and her friends could go out, she began vomiting and fainted.

“The victim fainted, was unconscious, and her pulse became weak. The victim’s face and lips turned blue,” Badung Police Precinct Chief, Budi Setiawan, told reporters on Monday.

Her friends initially gave her CPR but after there was no change, they called the hotel’s reception for a doctor.

The doctor arrived just after midnight to find Simmonds lying on the pool deck. She was pronounced dead just minutes later, Superintendent Budi said.

He said they suspect that she died from drinking too much alcohol.

Police are currently trying to get permission to perform an autopsy, and have taken samples of the drinks for testing.

Police found empty vodka bottles at the scene of her death, but no evidence of arak, a locally-produced spirit which has been linked to the deaths and serious injury of a number of tourists in the region.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said they were providing consular assistance to the woman’s family.

A male driver and a second passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash, AAP reports.

Around 2000 extra staff from a variety of agencies have been sent to the area already, with 600 hospital beds available in the region

More than 800 staff from Energy Queensland are ready to help restore lost power and the army is also on standby.

3. Gravedigger at Adelaide cemetery accused of ‘desecrating’ human remains.

A gravedigger working at one of Adelaide’s oldest and largest cemeteries is accused of “desecrating” human remains, The Advertiser reports.

The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority said the employee – who has since quit – allegedly took photographs of skulls, bones and decomposing bodies and then showed them off in social situations.

A full-scale police investigation has been launched after it is alleged the man took the photos while working as a gravedigger at Cheltenham Cemetery.

Planning Minister John Rau told The Advertiser that the claims must be “difficult” for families who have loved ones buried at the cemetery to hear.

“I have sought an urgent and detailed report from the Authority including full details of what has occurred to date,” he said.

“I have asked whether the family members of any deceased persons have been contacted. I have also asked if the images have been recovered and/or destroyed.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

The screaming and news of an axe attack on a woman in broad daylight at the shopping centre at Narre Warren sparked fear and disbelief.

Hasan Zaman, owner of The Beauty and Brow Parlour said staff called security and police when their colleague was attacked.

“She couldn’t talk, she was badly beaten,” he said.

He said it could have been even worse for the woman had she not been at work.

“It was lucky it was in the shopping centre, we could take immediate action and he didn’t run away.”

The woman is in the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Zaman said she had separated from her husband in the past year and was living with her two high-school-aged children.

5. Man with cerebral palsy who stabbed five-year-old girl 25 times jailed for at least six years.

A Victorian man with cerebral palsy lured a little girl into his home, sat on her chest, stabbed her 25 times and removed her T-shirt, but she fought back and escaped, AAP reports.

He also tried to take her shorts off but couldn’t because the girl’s legs were crossed.

Ty Ranger had gestured for the five-year-old to join him outside his Ballarat flat, “shepherded her away from adults” and cuddled her before taking her inside.

The 25-year-old then sat on the girl, stabbing her to the face, neck, chest, back and abdomen before removing her T-shirt and touching her chest and groin.

He was convicted in the County Court of Victoria on Monday of intentionally causing serious injury and one charge of possessing child pornography following the violent attack in November 2015.

Ranger has difficulty walking, talking and eating, and falls regularly, but has no mental incapacity.

The girl escaped by biting Ranger on the lip, causing him to drop the knife, and fleeing to her mother, covered in blood.

Police seized Ranger’s mobile phone and found two child porn images among a collection of 154 adult pornography pictures.

Judge Roy Punshon said although Ranger had pleaded guilty to the charges at the earliest stage, he denied he had attacked the girl.

“You said she picked up a knife on a coffee table and she was injured as you tried to get it off her,” he said.

“That’s inconsistent with your plea of guilty.”

He said as a result, Ranger had not demonstrated remorse and had not given a reason for the attack.

However, Judge Punshon said evidence suggested the attack was sexually motivated.

Ranger has problems with alcohol, has suffered suicidal thoughts since being in custody, and has attempted to harm himself.

He was sentenced to a maximum nine years and one month with a minimum non-parole period of six years and three months.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office arrested 37-year-old Deanna Lynn Greer and 26-year-old John David Cain on Friday. They were charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect or endangerment.
