Cricketers pay tribute to Luke Batty

Australian sportsmen honour cricket-loving schoolboy Luke Batty

As they took to the ground to play the second day of the South African Test match, Australian cricketers wore black armbands to pay tribute to school boy and avid cricketer, Luke Batty. Luke was tragically killed by his father Gregory Anderson after his cricket training on Wednesday night on the Mornington Peninsula.

Darren Lehmann spoke on behalf of the team, saying “Like everyone in the cricket community, we were shocked by the news. It’s obviously a tragic set of events and utterly devastating for the people of Tyabb, especially the Tyabb Cricket Club. Out hearts go out to Luke’s family, in particular his mother Rosie, his mates and everyone at the Tyabb Cricket club.”

The junior cricket coordinator of Luke’s team said that the 11-year-old had been with the club for around three years.  His mother, Rosie Batty, yesterday shared that ‘Luke enjoyed his footy, he enjoyed his cricket.’

The Tyabb Cricket Club have cancelled all matches this weekend as a sign of respect for Luke.
