Akon Guode: Mother who killed children breaks down as court hears of Wyndham Vale lake rescue efforts.

A Melbourne mother has broken down in court while hearing a detailed account of how she drove her car into a lake, killing three of her children.

Akon Guode, 37, has pleaded guilty to the infanticide of her one-year-old son Bol, the murder of twins Hanger and Madit, 4, and the attempted murder of her daughter Alual, 5, in 2015.

Prosecutors played CCTV footage of Guode’s car heading past the lake in Wyndham Vale, in Melbourne’s south-west, shortly before she drove into it.

Passers-by and emergency services frantically tried to help Guode and her children after the car plunged deep into Lake Gladman.

Alual survived after being pulled from the water and sent to hospital.

Prosecutors said witnesses saw the children crying hysterically in the car on the day Guode killed them.

CCTV cameras captured her travelling past the lake five times before she veered off the road.

Justice Lex Lasry adjourned the pre-sentence hearing when Guode began crying while hearing details of rescuers’ unsuccessful attempts to revive her baby.

Guode’s eldest daughter had testified that her mother had dizzy spells six months before she drove into the lake.
