Monday's news in 5 minutes.

 1. Jill Meagher’s killer Adrian Bayley is earning thousands in superannuation while he is in jail.

Adrian Bayley who killed Jill Meagher used legal aid.

The killer, who used taxpayer-funded legal aid, has never been ordered to pay compensation to his victims.

His account earned more than $1300 between the end of December last year and June this year while he was in prison, The Herald Sun reports.

His legal bills would have been more than $100,000 during the proceedings, in which Bayley pleaded guilty to the murder and rape of Ms Meagher and went to trial on three separate rape charges.

Victims of Crime Commissioner Greg Davies said it is 'common sense' that this money should be taken from Bayley.

"He (Bayley) should do what he has never done in his life and pay his way in society. On any common sense grounds he should not be able to retain that money," he said.

“It should go towards his legal costs, which were paid by the taxpayer, or be distributed to his victims.’’

Tostee has pleaded not guilty to the murder of New Zealand tourist Warriena Wright, 26, who fell to her death from his balcony in the early hours of August 8, 2014.

Defence barrister Saul Holt QC disputed the prosecution's claim Tostee choked Ms Wright, who was "massively drunk" and "out of control" that night, the court heard.

Prosecutors allege that Tostee intimidated Ms Wright to the point that she felt the only way to escape was to climb down from the balcony of his 14th floor Surfers Paradise apartment, but instead she plunged to her death.

Today Justice John Byrne will resume his directions to the jury, who will then begin deliberations.
