Mother of newborn baby boy abandoned on Griffith doorstep comes forward.

The mother of a newborn baby found abandoned on a doorstep in Griffith, south-west New South Wales, has been found safe and well.

Police said the woman went to Griffith Base Hospital shortly before midday yesterday.

Hospital staff contacted local police who arrived at the hospital a short time later.

The baby was found in a pink cloth bassinet outside a home on Braeburn Street just before midnight on Sunday.

A note was attached saying the baby was born on February 19 about 10:00am.

Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) staff are now supporting the mother and child, police said.

Police said the woman was over 18 and not a 14-year-old as some media had reported.

A spokeswoman for the Murrumbidgee Local Health District said the infant’s health was good and he had no visible injuries.

She said the baby had been discharged from hospital into the care of FACS staff on Monday.

A police statement said officers would like to thank the community for their assistance in the matter.

Griffith-based Linking Communities Network CEO Yvonne Wilson said debate was needed on introducing baby boxes to the state’s hospital, following the abandonment of the newborn.
