The hair only 5% of the population can wear is having a moment.

Aside from a few frozen faces and Lupita’s headband, the standout beauty look on the Oscars red carpet was pixie cuts.

From Jennifer Lawrence and Portia de Rossi, to Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway, the hottest hairstyle in Hollywood right now is also one of the trickiest to pull off in real life.

As J-Law demonstrates, style that crop with the hairdryer on full blast and it can add years to your face.

She’s actually 23, but looks closer in age to 41-year-old Portia de Rossi, who also rocked the swept back crop last night.

Pixies are the white tees of the hair world. You can wear ’em straight, messy, slicked down, and swept-hair but be warned, a palm full of hair gel is the difference between sleek and edgy and stiff politician helmet hair.

Flicking through all the stellar crops on the red carpet last night, the pixie fell into either of two camps; sleek and modern interpretations of Mia Farrow’s ingénue pixie or the swept-back power hair your mum sported in the late 80s/early 90s.

In our humble opinion we preferred Charlize’s sleek styling and Lupita’s half shaved head over the Jane Fonda-esque circa 1980s Jazzercise vibe Portia and J-Law rocked. But either way, short hair is definitely having a moment right now.

So, if you’re thinking of cutting your hair into a pixie, the time is now. Consider this your hairspiration board:

Anne Hathaway

Charlize Theron

Elsa Pataky

Kristin Chenoweth
Lady Gaga…so this is a wig, right?
Liza Minnelli brought back hair mascara.
Pink, who’s been rocking the crop for years now, during her performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Viola Davis’ loose finger waves.

Ohh Lupita, what can we say? Perfection.

Have you or would you ever cut your hair into a pixie? Which look do you prefer, J-Law’s swept-back version or Charlize’s sleek look?
