The exact reason young Daya on Orange is the New Black looks identical to Dascha Polanco.

WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

If you’re here, you’ve probably already seen the latest season currently streaming on Netflix. But again, if not, now might be time to click elsewhere. Perhaps on this wonderful story about Vaseline hacks.

We had many, many questions after (binge) watching Season 5 of Orange is the New Black. Where are those buses going? Why is Alison Abdullah in prison? Did Chang make it? And how exactly did Frieda smuggle a full-size futon into the bunker without anybody noticing?

But perhaps the most puzzling part of the popular Netflix show was this… or should we say, her. On the right:

The same. But different. Images: Netflix.

The 14-year-old version of seminal character Daya.

As the plot delved into the knotty relationship between the Litchfield inmate and her former felon mother, Aleida, in episode eight, we were given a glimpse into Daya's teenage years.

These flashbacks featured a actress that looked so strikingly like a young Dascha Polanco we assumed the producers had worked out the key to time travel. Or had at least used some kind of special TV makeup.

Turns out the solution was much simpler.

The role of teenage Daya was played by Polanco's 16-year-old daughter Dasany Kristal Gonzalez.

The 34-year-old, who also has a 7-year-old son, gave birth to the budding actress at the age of 18, an experience she previously spoke about with Latina magazine.

For all things TV, catch the latest episode of The Binge. Post continues below.

"She's a blessing, a miracle baby," she said, “but for a first experience, it was difficult.”

The actress told the publication that she wouldn't encourage other women to become mothers at such a young age.

"Nothing's wrong with it," she said, "it just makes it a little bit more challenging."

Well, there you have it. One of the season's most burning questions answered.
