Even though she's divorcing Tom Cruise, life goes on for Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri. On Wednesday morning they went shopping and Katie spoke briefly to a NY Daily News reporter.
"I'm all right. Thank you," Holmes told the newspaper as she pushed Suri in a shopping trolley.
The previous evening, Katie and Suri were photographed going out for ice cream in N.Y.C.'s East Village, smiling and laughing together (see photo insert).
"She's not going to hide," a source close to Holmes told the Daily News. "She's going to live her life."
Cruise, who turned 50 on Tuesday, was reportedly blindsided when Katie filed for divorce last week. According to People, that's exactly how Katie planned it.
"She was talking to Tom on the phone up until last week saying, 'I love you,'" a source told the magazine.
The magazine's sources reveal that Holmes moved to New York City in June with the intention of filing for divorce. However, she told Cruise that she wanted to be there because that apartment had an underground garage, which would help her dodge the paparazzi. Meanwhile, Katie began to move her things to the East Coast, and even switched out her mobile phone to make her "unreachable." Last week, her father Martin Holmes came to New York City for the final stage of the plan: firing many of her and Tom's employees before she filed for divorce. While all this was happening, Cruise was filming in Iceland.
Why all the secrecy and planning? Most outlets are reporting that Tom was — surprise! — extremely controlling of Katie. Scientology (Cruise's controversial religion) would also seem to play a part in the divorce, with rumors that Suri was going to be shipped off to its top-secret "Sea Org" program. A representative from the Church of Scientology has denied this, however.
"With regard to your question about Suri Cruise joining the Sea Organization, Scientology's religious order: The first we've heard of this is from the media," a rep told E! News on Wednesday. The story is preposterous and untrue."
Still, Scientology is a faith that requires extreme commitment, and it's possible that Katie had enough. Or maybe the issue was something else entirely that the media has no clue about. The important thing is that Katie and Suri seem to be doing just fine. As for Tom — well, we'll have to wait and see.
