Dear Internet, sometimes you make me feel dirty….

….like yesterday when I heard about the nude photos of Naomi Watts that were snapped when her robe came open as she stood on her hotel balcony in California where she’s shooting a movie. A private moment captured for the world by an opportunistic parasite.

I was appalled. Disgusted that she could be stalked by paparazzi just a month after giving birth. Horrified at the thought of myself or any other woman in the same situation. Angry that we live in a culture that trades upon such images.
And then – despite all that – I went to the site where they were posted and I had a look. Because I was curious. I’m ashamed that I looked at those photos. I wish that I hadn’t. Her caesarean scar is plainly visible. She’s natural and beautiful but it’s a gross, gross intrusion. And I participated in it.

I’m not going to link to the photos here because I don’t want to contribute to more people seeing them and also because I loathe the misogynistic gossip site that posted them. That’s probably hypocritical of me which is one more transgression to add to my list of bad deeds.

I’m sorry Naomi. So who’s to blame here? The internet? Our celebrity-obsessed culture? The paparazzi? Or everyone like me who looked at the photos……. because we’re a part of the ugly, dirty machine that targets women at their most vulnerable?
