About Mia

My Life in 10 points. Wait, 11.

.

1. I started my careeer doing work experience at Cleo magazine aged 19. If you want to do work experience at a magazine, I can't personally help you anymore but try going here.

2. I became the Editor of Australian Cosmopolitan at 24. Three months later I got knocked up with my first child. Timing.

3. The career achievement I'm most proud of was instigating Cosmo's Body Love policy in 1997 where diets were banned and we started featuring "real women" (aka non-models) sized 6-16 in every issue. Different skin colours too. Diversity, empowerment and reality - they were my editorial mantras during my Editor years.

4. I edited Cosmo for seven years, 100 issues. My favourite moment was when I published some nude photos of Brad Pitt and I got a cranky letter from his lawyers. Brad was displeased but I was delighted to have passed through his orbit, however briefly. Me and Brad. Connected forever.

5. By the time I left magazines, aged 34, I was Editor in Chief of Cosmo, Cleo and Dolly and had launched spin-off titles Cosmo Brides, Cosmo Pregnancy & Cosmo Hair & Beauty. Good times, great people. I was done.

6. I write a weekly column for the Sun-Herald and Sunday Age.

7. Right now I'm writing my second book. It's a kind of memoir, about juggling pregnancy and babies and work and life. Lots of things I've never written about before will be in this book. When it's finished. Which should be any day now.......gulp. Released in 09. Books take a looooooong time.

8. In 2005, a book of my writing called The New Black was published. You can buy it here.

9. After leaving magazines, I spent a year as part of the executive team at Channel 9. It was extremely interesting and highly challenging. In the end, I decided TV was not my thing and I quit. No hard feelings either side. You can read about how it all went down here.

10. I am married with two kids. And one more on the way. My family are the Wind Beneath My Wings.

11. I'm blogging weekly about pregnancy and parenting on Essential Baby.
