So, do you think Katie Holmes can dance?

Do you like this story?

So Katie Holmes appeared on an episode of the US So You Think You Can Dance show which aired at the weekend. I think it takes guts to put yourself out there like this.

  1. Dear Mia. Firstly, no, I don’t think she can dance. Dancing with the stars celebs can dance better than that, and she’s a professional performer (she has claimed in interviews that her first love was sing and dance, before she turned to acting). And she’s been taking singing and dance lessons for almost a year now.

Secondly, I believe she committed the ultimate entertainment sin of performing a pre-recorded piece (which took an entire day or perhaps two to film, was all over gossip websites at the time). This means her performance was chopped, changed and perfected both during recording and in the editing suite. And it still didn’t look like she could dance. Also, she was appearing on a show that prides live performance above all, and the contestants themselves have to make it or break it in front of critical judges and a live audience. I think it’s insulting that she did a pre-recorded piece.

Thirdly, apparently the website for the charity she’s promoting here (which she is a co-founder of) does not conform to the legal standards set by the US Tax folks, and it isn’t even registered as a non-profit in the US. Which leads me to think that it is associated with, and that the money will be administered by, the Church of Scientology. Which is BAD NEWS.

So. Yeah. Not a winner for me.

Oh good grief – seriously – do we have to give someone a hard time for doing things well, not excellently??? Yes, she can sing, about as well as many sucessful singers out there, hell she can high kick and not fall over backwards in heels, but yes as has been previously stated she was the entertainment in a break in the show – thats all she had to be intertaining and informative about the scholarship fund so that young americans watching the show would know about it – and she did that.
i love her acting – always have always will, she cansing as well as many ‘starlets’ can, her voice certainly isn’t – what was it – grating?
and if i looked that good in fishnets and heels i would be a happy mum indeed :)
why do we need to bring people down because they are famous or marry the ‘wrong’ person – millions of people do that every day and aren’t condemmned…sorry i get a bit over this Katie is Tom type stuff- she isn’t.

Good on Katie for having a go, even if it was out of her comfort zone. It was entertaining and she looks fantastic. She gave up her time and appearance fee for the charity, which is a lot more than most of these young actors do these days. And just because people don’t agree with her husband’s religious beliefs, I think it’s pretty unfair to take it out on her

wow, i think she was awesome!

i read so much panning of this before i actually watched the clip, i think i fell prey to hyped-down rather than up.

there has been a lot of criticism about how long she trained to do this “just to do a Britney at the VMAs”, but she isn’t Britney! She had no dancing background at all! and I thought all her moves were sharp and on point (maybe fairer to compare with dancing with the stars rather than the SYTYCD contestants).

If you look up Judy Garland’s original on YouTube, it is actually an almost move-by-move copy choreographically. Maybe they should have intro-ed it that way?

She definitely lip-synched, but it was to her own voice, which has improved a thousand fold since that awful version of “on my own” she sang in Dawson’s Creek – remember that??

Yeah she can move, but I think that should’ve been sexy.. and even with her legs she didn’t make it sexy.
Still, she can certainly dance better than I can :)

I know her husband is a bit odd, but what’s with all the negativity in the media about this performance?
She was just the entertainment(for charity) during a break in the elimination show…I don’t think she was claiming to be the best singer or dancer!? I dont think she was competing to be the winner of this season of SYTYCD!? Or trying to be the next Judy Garland?!

I am a bit ambivilent about Katie generally but I liked this. It was entertaining. All it was meant to be I’m guessing.

The vocals have obviously been pre-recorded in a studio and then she would have danced and mimed it when shooting the live action.
It’s how Judy Garland would have done it in all her movies! Good on her – it is a very effective way to garner publicity for the charity – which is obviously why she did it. She is just gorgeous and can dance well enough for the choreography. Go Katie.

Given this was for charity, I thought good on her for giving it a go. Yes, the choreography wasn’t particularly challenging, but she did it well and I didn’t think her singing was too bad either. Although I think it’s pretty clear she was lip syncing, which makes it kind of poor form for the host to hype up her singing: “but you’re not only dancing on this, you’re singing too, right?” Wrong.

I thought Katie looked great for a Mum – mind you she is still a young Mum – she did a great job and it was for charity so good on her for getting up there – I would too if I had legs like hers. Tom can be proud of her! He is pretty cute too for his age – always been a Tom Cruise fan even though he is a bit full on with the scientology rubbish – these celebs just have too much money and they don’t know what to do with it all.

If the show was called So You Think You Can Cabaret, then yes, she did a brilliant job. But it’s So You Think You Can Dance, which this was not. For what she did, it was really good, and a good way to raise money for charity, but I can’t answer the question of whether or not she can dance from this because it just ain’t dancing. It’s cabaret.

I think that was really good.. I guess that routine was a bit ‘safe’ but there were a lot of moves in there that are a lot harder than they look.
also, I never understand why people are surprised when actors can sing or dance – most actors start out doing musical theatre at school and when you’re a poor struggling actor looking for a job, you need to be skilled at everything or no one will hire you!

What is every ones problem? She did a great job. I think people love bagging her because you can’t take her seriosly after the Tom Cruise thing and the whole over styled make over. Regardless she did fine.

Meh, wasn’t impressed by the routine, but I hope it helped raise funds and awareness for her charity.

Maybe they could get Tom on next week and he could do a Risky Business/Couch Jumping routine?

Or he could just give out “Free Personality Tests”.

Last week the papers here in Melbourne reported that Katie and Suri were spotted at Target in the Bourke St. mall on a shopping spree for toys. They were later photographed at the Starbucks across the road having a coffee and bubbacino.

I have done this exact same thing with my daughter. Only now do I realise how glamorous my lifestyle truly is.

As for the dancing-she’s no Ginger Rogers but what a gorgeous looking girl.

Do you really think she’s brave? She chose the profession of acting/theater. This means she has to put herself out there and do things like the above or else she won’t get work. I honestly don’t think she’s much of a singer. I agree with most that she’s not dancing so much on here as she is just moving. I loved Katie when I was younger, but I don’t think it was because of her amazing talent. I think her talent is ok, but nothing to write home about. Poor girl got into a world of trouble with that person she married. I wouldn’t be surprised if he signs off on any work she does.

Oh come on, don’t be so critical of a charity stunt. Of course they need a star or someone of public notoriety to attract attention. I think she should be applauded for her fund raising efforts, no one is going to seriously say she is dynamite, but she did get up there and give it a go.

I think it was an atrocious performance and Judy Garland would have been turning in her grave!

Tonnes of the people who didn’t even make Las Vegas week would have left her in the dust.

At least on the Australian show the dance performances on the results show are by actual dancers, ie. the Australian Ballet etc.
