New Mamamia website…..the countdown begins

Behind the scenes at Mamamia, we're working feverishly on a rebuild of this site with all sorts of fun and fancy new bits and pieces. I'm excited. Very. Some of these are in response to requests from you and some are just things I've wanted to do for a long time. Remember when I asked for your feedback? Every comment was gratefully received and helped us make some tweaks to functionality and implement some new features. I hope you're going to like it. After the jump, a quick snapshot preview of how the new homepage will look….and some more details about new and improved features. We're hoping to go live in the next couple of weeks….
Here's an early sneak peak at roughly how it's going to look….
Some of the new and improved features will include:
- Enhanced commenting – so you can have a photo/profile to go with your comments if you want (but you will still be able to comment anonymously or with whatever name you like, just like you do now)
- A rating system for posts so you can tell me what you like and what's '….meh'
- A new and improved archive and search system for past posts
- More frockwatch
- Cool clips of the day
- Ask Mia videos - where you can leave questions for me (about anything) and I'll do regular video posts and answer as many as I can as often as possible.
- A 'best-of' section with the posts which are 'most popular', 'Mia's faves', 'most comments' etc
- A dedicated Group Therapy section where you can help other people solve their problems and seek advice for any of your own.
To follow a little later, we'll be introducing:
- Fully integrated forums so you can chat amongst yourselves
- Mamamia TV - which sounds fancy shmancy but will actually just be me interviewing people I think are interesting.

Dear Mia. I’ve only been reading for a couple of months, but I like your current design. The new design looks great – but it’s a *website* website, not a perosnal blog website.
I agree with a previous commenter about the necessity of navigating through blogs being a deterrant – to me, there’s a time and a place for reading a blog vs reading a mag-style website, and when I only have time to flick through my favourite blogs, I don’t have the mental capacity for a proper website. I just want to log and and read the voices I enjoy, in chronological order.
The Pioneer Woman redid her website maybe a year ago, and it looks great, it’s absolutely beautiful, but I now go there and feel lost, so I’m sorry to say I don’t read it anymore.
I’m not sure what constructive criticism can be construed from my comment, but perhaps: keep the blog posts nice and rustic, and ‘blog’ looking, and keep the extras prominent, but not dominant on the page.

Tara – yeah, I was adamant about this. Posts need to stay in reverse chronology like they are now. I’m going to have a featured post that stays at the top for a day or however long but will continue to scroll underneath like now….

I agree with an earlier commenter about the need for posts to be in chronological order…the worst thing on blogs is where you can’t easily find the new content. Will there be a place to view your posts in chronological order if we so desire?

Wow, I can’t believe how this blog has grown. When I first started reading, there were about 10 of us commenting regularly. Then I got busy and became a silent reader, new regular commenters came, the blog exploded in popularity and now the new look. It’s amazing how well you’ve done, Mia. Congratulations.
The new look is definitely slick and you have some great ideas, though I think I may also miss the old style. It felt distinctly Australian, personal and very comfortable.

Your blog is full of really great content and covers such a diverse array of topics. Now with your new design and features, it’s just going to be even better! mia i love that you’re progressing with the site, but can i just quickly say that as a long time reader (since ’07) the thing i love about your site is that every new thing that you put up all comes up in chronological order on the main page and you don’t have to navigate away from it and go ‘looking’ for things. an example of this is a site like primped where i find it hard to keep up with all the updates because it’s not on a feed at the homepage and you have to go find things (product reviews galleries slide shows blogs etc.) hope that your site stay simple!!! in saying that i will remain an avid reader regardless as the best part is the content!!

I’m sure the new and improved site will give you a well deserved break every now and again, and allow you to really relax knowing that traffic will keep flowing through the site, even when your not posting. Everyone (sponsors) stay happy.

Firstly I love you and your existing site – have been reading your columns for years. I don’t usually post, I’m just a spectator.
However, as a Digital Art Director myself, I gotta say that the new website design is, erm, not the best.
It lacks all the charm and personality of your posts, and looks like just one of the many run-of-the-mill template-based news site designs.
Honestly Brand Mamamia deserves better.

Mia it looks great! It seems more interactive and more choice. Instead of waiting for a post that ‘rocks my boat’ I can spend time browsing different things. I REALLY like the idea of MammiaTV.
