Everybody’s talking about: Nicole on Letterman last night
Ohhhhh, this is uncomfortable to watch. Not a lot of chemistry. And the only thing that moves is the muscles in her neck.
x
After the jump, Part 2 and a bit of compare-and-contrast with Nicole on Letterman from 2001……just after she split with Tom…….

The Letterman interview has brought more attention to her and hence the movie. All publicity is supposedly good?
I agree her face is too much.
I watched this the other night and I didn’t think Nic was giving Dave a lot to work with. I’m not a Nic basher but I would also say she is not exactly the personality princess – she can be hard to extract from on the most basic level. Even Tracy Grimshaw struggled with her at the Australia premiere, Nic was not even listening to the questions.
i watched this the other night and it was awful!!! its like no one briefed her before she went out. every one knows that lettermans interview style is to randomly quiz guests about irrelevant things often getting an entertaining and revealing interview out of them before getting to the promo for thier latest project.
i agree with some other posts here that letterman is chauvenistic but nicole was terrible on the show! it was so uncomfortable and akward when she was like can we just talk about the movie? not to mention how painful it was to watch her shiny face pull at the jaw line every time she talked. i really want to like nicole, she used to be so beautiful classic and a great rep for australia but now im embarrassed by her! poor thing!
Not sure what you are all slagging her about – I thought she handled it well. She was relaxed, a lot more relaxed than in the earlier clip!! Good on you Nicole, I am happy for you.
I’ve voiced my opinion previously on Nicole, I think she’s a nice person but she cannot act, she cannot interview and I totally agree with you Mia, about the lying and not being upfront about stuff. Who cares if she has had anything done to her face, just don’t lie about it. It’s so freaking obvious that she has had stuff done, her forehead just doesn’t move whatsoever! And I guess that’s what puts me off about her.
But I don’t like her as an actress because I don’t think she can act at all and I don’t understand what everyone sees in her.
And it is her job to interview well as Tara succinctly pointed out … majority of other actors are able to pull it off, they are actors, she should just play one of her characters!!! But then she’s a crap actress so she can’t pull it off! But I too agree that Letterman wasn’t great it creating a consistent interview with his questions, he was all over the shop!
I like Nicole. Yes the botox is distracting, but I still find her very likeable. I’m over the Nicole bashing.
Mia – did you see the Angelina (and Clint Eastwood) interview on Andrew Denton the other night?
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/
Very different to the above. LOVED it.
Letterman is an idiot. I only ever watch Letterman for the guests not the host. Rove you might watch for the host but Letterman? Him and that quack; his little musical sidekick who hangs off his every word shamelessly ~ it’s just bizarre. I didn’t actually mind Nicole in these interviews. Sure she seemed uncomfortable but Letterman does kinda put her on the spot a lot. “Hows the divorce?” etc I don’t think she did Australia any wrong… she is a celebrity and even if her baby is going to have a Southern accent which is normal if it will grow up there she doesn’t seem ashamed of her roots. Does Portia di Rossi ever mention Australia? Have we adopted Ellen as our gay daughter like Tom Cruise was once loved? No. And we could! Nicole has a much stronger Australian accent then Kylie who we all adore and can do no wrong… I’m not fanatical about Nicole no.. but she is an elegant woman and I think it would be very tough to be in such a critical spotlight. I think the biggest problem we all have with her is that she WONT ADMIT TO BOTOX! Why?? The only strangeness of the 1st interview was how her face didn’t move. Did anyone else hear when Letterman was unsure if he said something wrong and Nicole said “NO no.. I’m smiling; this is an affectionate smile”
hehe… In comparison to the 2nd one her nose has definitely changed and movement too. Oh well. Live and let live.
I found her endearing, and the fact that she doesn’t know how to wear a mask and ‘do’ a proper interview with carefully crafted answers and requisite flirting with ugly old host charming.
Letterman is just another obnoxious american interviewer. I can’t imagine Andrew Denton treating a guest in that manner.
I didn’t really see much difference between her recent interview and the older one. I just think she gets nervous on those shows, in the older clip she says herself that she’s hopeless on those shows but I guess sh has to do it to fufill her commitment to promoting he film.
Her job is to be an actress, not an interview subject.
It was weird when Letterman kept quizzing her about Keith :-/
The man is an egocentric pig, it was him I could barely watch. Nicole = elegant, composed & every inch a star.
That was a pretty vicious comment by Letterman with the “Gee that’s the face you want, right there.” Sounds like a pretty blunt attack on the Botox. A bit rude to a friendly guest on the show.
What about how cute Ellen is trying to get Mariah Carey fess up to being pregnant? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFBQJErmflg Just wanted to share the link!
Aaaahhh Nicole, my favourite topic, how handy that my baby is having a nap…I am totally with gigdiary and tara on this one. I think Letterman was fine, he is one of the few U.S interviewers who is really random and piss-takey, and it’s what we aussies are known for so whats the problem? She is just precious about herself and her life. If it’s all so hard, retire to the ranch, have more babies and go crazy with the facial paralysis-it’s only botulism for gods sake.
Oh gigdiary…it’s not often that I see totally eye to eye with you but in this instance I think you are absolutely right!
Nicole only seems to thrive in soft, cushy interviews where she isn’t challenged and the interviewer sticks to clearly prearranged topics.
Not my cup of tea – I prefer something with more substance and interest but if that’s what floats your boat then ok
Letterman is exactly what a real interviewer is! Well, a ‘tonight show’ entertaining one, not a Barbara Walters boring one. You can always tell when he has a charmless guest on his show. He makes himself the centre of attention because there ain’t much else happening between that desk and the guest’s chair.
I bet you London to a brick she’ll be back on his show again. He had too much fun taking the mickey out of her….
David Letterman is in the media – its his job to ask difficult questions and get answers out of his interview subjects. He’s not there to hold their hands and sing kumbaya with her.
Dave is the same with all his guests – that is his interview style. If she wants to spruik on his show then she knows what she is getting herself into.
How is asking about her husband and baby trying to ‘rile her up’ – she has been open about her family and husband many times before. Take the Oprah interview as the most recent example.
Just Nicole can’t hold her own with a tough interviewer doesn’t mean we have to blame the interviewer!
I saw the latest Nicole interview with Letterman on TV the other night. And compared to the older one, not much difference. Just shocking. It seems like her only agenda for being there is to promote her movies. In both inerviews, she only becomes normal when talking about the film she is promoting. Which I can understand – acting is her living. But Letterman isn’t really someone who is a real interviewer. When people go on Letterman, I think they have to be prepared for a pretty random and off-topic interview. And they need to just go along with it if they want to come off well. It’s Nicole’s own silly fault for stuffing it up. The first interview could be forgiven if that was her first time on Letterman (though surely she should/would have done her homework?!). But the second time, no way. She’d done it before, she knew what he was like. Just go with the flow, Nic! You can bet she won’t be on there again.
I loved this interview! Classic Letterman, ‘loaded’, yes, that’s his modus operandi, and funny, well, funny in only the way a 60-year old uncool guy can be. Nicole was almost loosening up, apart from the face, her English/trying hard American accent not quite hiding what’s left of her old Aussie accent….
I think it’s sad that she is determined that Sunday will speak with a Nashville twang instead of our wonderful Aussie lilt…anyway….Between her face and her accent she seems to be erasing all evidence of what was once a gorgeous personality….
but then what would I know, being just another 50-year old uncool guy…..
I find it very uncool that she can’t move her forehead, I mean if you have a face, use it! Hello?? Where is the actress in you Nicole? You can’t make a valid point, without using your forehead. No way. But other than that I looove her as an actress, I think she is brilliant. On screen she does her craft well.
Did anyone watch the Simon Baker interview after the second Nicole interview? He’s up there with Hugh Jackman for me… what a SPUNK!!!!
I don’t get what all the Nicole hate is all about. Yes, she’s has botox – show me a Hollywood celebrity that hasn’t?
I don’t find her a giggling idiot in this, and I am not a fan of Letterman but he clearly comes across as an idiot. He grills her for 5 minutes about her husband – clearly trying to rile her up and I think she handles it really well.
She tolerated his sexist bullshit about her looks really well, she could have been gruff about it but she was polite and tolerant.
Sorry Tara I totally don’t get your comment about why you believe she should represent your Australian patriotic beliefs with her child and where she chooses to bring her up.
The world is a big place does it matter where you were born??!! I was born in England, but I call New Zealand home. Seriously, in the great big scheme of things SO WHAT? Do people really feel the need to claim celebrities as their own just because of their birthplace. I couldn’t give two hoots that Keith Urban was born in NZ, just like a couldn’t care less that Crowded House call Melbourne home.
Moving along…
I agree with ‘The Real Sydney’, I’m totally over the Nicole bashing as well. Ugh – enough already! Who cares if she’s had “work done” it’s her face to do with what she wants.
Doesn’t we have better/more important things to discuss?!
Tara – Nicole and Keith live in Nashville because that’s where he makes his living … unfortunately Americans loved and appreciated him long before we even knew who he was.
As far as Nicole being an ambassador for Australia – she is staunchly proud of being Australian and says it to whoever will listen and has been doing so for 20+ years & still has the accent to prove it – just because she now happens to live in Nashville with her husband doesn’t negate the fact that simply by being Australian and having a huge international profile promotes our country.
Dave is a terrible interviewer and always seeks to embarrass his guests – I think he is apalling – he is totally overrated.
I think Nicole seems really warm and nice, and it is fantastic she has kept her wonderful Aussie accent. She does a good job, I couldn’t even imagine doing an interview with Letterman. It would be nervewarcking!
But Mia, everytime you do a post on Nicole Kidman, I always get so distracted by her face. It is scary.
Please, Nicole, please, please STOP!
Okay, I had completely forgotten how gorgeous Nicole used to be. And there is NO WAY she has not had work done. Why does she deny this? Forget the botox, what’s with the fat lips and has she had cheek implants? her whole facial structure seems changed, elongated or something. used to love the old hair colour too. this new blond albino look is not attractive.
I have always been a Kidman fan, but she does make it hard to be one these days. Though with the Letterman interview, I think he just got her really off kilter with how awkward the beginning was. Talk about drilling her about keith. She just didn’t seem to know how to take it and got kinda nervous and giggly I think.
Kelly
I loved that, i thought it was hilarious was laughing with Nicole! I don’t think the problem was Nicole it was Dave he can’t ask a straight question!
I watch Nicole and I want to love her. I totally agree TRS that she is deserving of the love. But when I watch her I just wonder what her family thinks when they are talking to her.’If my sister suddenly talked to me with lips like that and a face that didn’t move, I would be FREAKED OUT. She should be SO engaging – but she is an actress and her face doesn’t move.
I don’t think Nicole is such a great ambassador – and she has only recently come out saying she is trilled that her baby will call Nashville home – not Australia, but Nashville, where neither her or her husband were born.
If I’m going to have her foisted on me as an ambassador I would at least like her to want her child to call Australia home.
Its not tall poppy syndrome – I could wax lyrical about how wonderfully Hugh Jackman, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann etc represent Australia on the world stage.
That interview was appalling – if she was a better interviewee she would deflect while still remaining engaging. Instead she just giggles like a child. She was so rude when she cut Dave off and said “Can we just talk about the movie now” and then when it was time to talk about the movie she clammed up and then forgot what the clip was about.
Its not Dave’s job to make her comfortable and ask her the questions she wants to be asked. She’s on his show spruiking – she needs to take what comes.
I hate women who think that by giggling and speaking with a soft child like voice they don;t have to have anything substantial to say. And Nicole unfortunately never has anything substantial to say – nothing interesting, engaging or particularly insightful.
Sooooooooooo OVER Nicole bashing …. she’s done nothing but be a great ambassador for Australia, never done anything scandalous, has won an Oscar, dealt with life under the harsh spot light of being married to Tom Cruise, held her head high and maintained her dignity after their divorce, found love again with the gorgeous Keith Urban and FINALLY gave birth to a baby she had obvioulsy craved for at least a decade. Can we give her a break PLEASE ????
TALL POPPY SYNDROME MUCH ????
ooh this is painful to watch. and I cannot get over the lack of movement in Nicole’s face.
I’m now not looking forward to seeing Australia if she has no facial expressions!
totally off topic – what is going on with her hair colour?
Oh my god. I saw a bit of this on Letterman, and had to stop watching. And then I tried to watch the bit I missed here, but had to stop watching. And then I watched the ‘post break-up with Tom’ bit, but had to stop watching. Those interviews are so awful, I hate to say it – no, I’m going to say it – that interview is almost as bad as the infamous Meg Ryan Parkinson interview, which was just absoutely excruciating.
If I were friends with Nicole, I’d say to her, (not looking directly at her face, because you know I can’t do that anymore), I’d say “Nic… you must never, EVER go on Letterman ever again. Are we clear? Ever.”
Going on Letterman must be one of the most intimidating things ever for an actor or performer. Lots of stars seem a bit nervous, and when they get through it I’m always kind of proud, and happy for them. “You made it.” I say to them, and then I can sleep. So it’s a tough gig. Maybe they should have a class on how to handle Letterman at NIDA or something? ‘Letterman 101′. Having said that, Nicole has been on Letterman before, so you’d think she’d be a bit better prepared. I mean, she’s an actress – why doesn’t she just act like she can handle Letterman?
But to be fair to her, the bulk of the questions were irrelevant. It’s really very sexist, (but quite common), for a male interviewer to waffle on about an actress’s ‘beauty’, as though that’s the number one thing they have going for them, (you see interviewers do this to Angelina Jlolie all the time). Then to go on about her husband ad nauseum… it’s no wonder she got so visibly annoyed and uncomfortable. And it is difficult to hear him waffling on about Australia as though it’s just been discovered!
She didn’t handle it well, but in fairness, the questions were crap and he really could have handled it better himself. A lot of the questions were really loaded. When people want to turn off because it’s so awkward, that’s bad television. Even though I’d like to press the ‘undo’ button and have Nic’s previous face back, I really felt for her a bit. I felt like I was watching a kid frozen on stage in their first class performance, and I wanted to take her out for some ice cream to help her get over it. Shame on you, Dave, ya big bully!
I had totally forgotten how much her eyebrows used to move!
Botox is just not worth it and as an actress surely moving your face is important. Also the mouth, she doesn’t need to plump the lips up so much. Such a shame.
I don’t know, I have always liked Nicole, but she just seems to come across as a bit of a giggly ditz in these interviews. She seems to be a bit of a caricature of herself these days.
