NEWS ALERT: one for the mums and to pass on to all those with babies and toddlers…..

Do you like this story?

Last week, Canada banned all baby products containing a cancer-causing chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). It’s commonly used in all kinds of hard plastic products, most commonly baby bottles.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

The media here has been unspeakably and inexplicably slow to pick up on this story, despite other countries now following Canada’s lead. France is the latest.

I’ve posted some links after the jump that you should check out if you have kids who use bottles or know someone who does.
At our place, we’ve just binned all our Avent bottles. The whole thing is a nightmare……..

You can read about it here:
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=bisphenol+A+baby+bottles&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=news_result&resnum=1&ct=title

There’s a report here that lists all the BPA-free brands:

Also, I’ve found an Australian website that sells glass bottles and one of the BPA-free brands, Adiri. They deliver in 3-5 days:

I was a practicing Midwife and of course always recommended breastfeeding initially, but when mums chose to breastfeed, I always told them that the old fashions bottle and teats (we call them “cannon” teats) are just as good as any fancy new ones released…

I know, I feel sick about all those bottles I heated and re-heated when my kids were little. On the holidays I bought a Brita water filter from K-Mart which came with a drinking bottle to be re-used, and it has none of the BPA in it. It is good for older kids for school lunch boxes, etc.

Bloody hell, have used Avent for my first 2 kids, and am pregnant with no 3. Ugh. What a hassle – was feeling quite smug that I didn’t have to buy anymore stuff, now feel awful….

Eve that’s a good point – when I went researching last night one article mentioned warnings having been issued to pregnant women against drinking out of plastic drink bottles (those hard plastic sports bottles like cyclists use) for the same reason. That horrified me too…and for years my mother has warned my husband to stop using his constantly (he uses the same ones for years until they die a horrible death and drinks water from them all day long). The scary possibilities here seem endless :o (

As someone who doesn’t have children I am still appalled by this but am also wondering if this stuff is “commonly used in all kinds of hard plastic products” what else is it in that I (or other adults) might be using?!

Yikes. We used Pigeon bottles for our son. Sounds like a bit of research is in order before buying any bottles for the child(ren) to come…

Oh and PS anyone who knows of any other sippy-cups that are truly non-spill like the Avent Magic Sportster then please sing out as it took me ages and lots of experiments to find they were the best for me and now I’ll have to start all over again!

Oh Mia I feel sick but THANK YOU! I have the 11 month’s old Avent bottle (which we’ve JUST bought for her water) sitting right here on the desk next to me, and beside that one of her Avent dummies that we’ve used since birth :o ( (Do they also contain this stuff??) And Miss Nearly-4 also used an Avent water bottle for about 2 years. I can’t believe it – thank you so much again for highlighting this and I’m going to pass it on to everyone I know.
