This ad is apparently offensive. I’m not quite sure why.

The Australian Advertising Standards Board has received a bunch of complaints within days of this ad for Kotex U tampons being released. Frankly, I’m shocked that anyone would be shocked. And also? Perhaps they need to get a life.

I thought it was funny. Reminds me of the South Park episode when Cartman got an infection in his anus and thought he had reached puberty because he had finally got his period. He went shopping for tampons and as he is perusing the different brands, there’s one he picks up called “Beaver Dam”. I think that is the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life – it still cracks me up.

  2. I don’t see the problem here either? I agree Mia, get a life. I don’t see how this ad is about feminism at all, its just silly.
I’ve found plenty of other ads much more offensive. I, like Eliza, took a bit to figure out the point of the ad even, and then when I did, *shrug* whatever.

Woman have enough trouble getting society to treat us respectfully without some ad coming out and openly using (what I think) is a fairly derogatory term. I’m not offended enough to officially complain, but I think the ad is rude and would be happy to see it removed.

I think its funny. I’d rather see that than an ad which describes how they work etc. The only people thats offensive to is silly old fuddy duddies and they should go back and listen to their radio.

Maybe its the fact that she’s flashing her beaver around with no shame at all? Cause that can lead to all sorts of things you know. She’ asking for it and stuff? then u get the argument like that Muslim Cleric was on about ‘ “If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside … without cover, and the cats come to eat it … whose fault is it, the cats’ or the uncovered meat’s?” “Shit that doesnt even make sense?” So if a bear jumped on her beaver?, well, we cant have that, take it off the air, protect the beaver at all costs!!

The society of today is coming to a point where if they sensor anything more we will be back in the dark ages. This did not work in the sixties or any other era for that matter.By hiding and not educating people on matters of the birds and bees and the bloody curse they went on about also. Scaring young girls silly for all those years, where did it get them. I couldnt see a problem with the commercial, some people need to lighten up.

To be honest it took me awhile to understand the ad… I didn’t know what the animal was supposed to be. But when I worked it out I didnt find it offensive, just silly really.
One ad I did think was a little distasteful is a holden ad shown here locally for a sale where they show the Titanic and say something like, an iceberg’s not a big deal our new car/ sale (or whatever) is a big deal! I just don’t like it cause ppl died when the Titanic sank and I think it’s i poor taste.

I’m with you Mia. I don’t see what the big deal is. I mean, yeah, it’s not the most tasteful tampon ad I’ve ever seen, but some people are just easily offended. Not to mention that some of them had probably to refer to the net/their kids to work out what the hell was going on before they could even get offended.
Besides, I don’t see anyone complaining enough about the demeaning beer ads that they show to get them taken off air, and they don’t even have cute, fuzzy, happy animals in them.

Tracee Hutchison (not sure of spelling) has an op-ed on this is today’s Age that makes, I think, a pretty good argument as to why it’s problematic.

(Although, perhaps it was reading this piece that made you wonder what all the fuss was about in the first place!)
Seriously, you don’t think ‘beaver’ is pretty perjorative?
