The hidden meaning behind Daenerys' braids in Game of Thrones.

It’s a series that spans generations and has struck a chord all over the world. Grandfathers are talking to granddaughters, and mothers to their sons, about dragons, and white walkers and who’s next on the iron throne.

It’s all in the name of HBO’s television series Game of Thrones, initially based on the novels from George R. R. Martin.

The show is filled with symbolism and viewers watch frenetically for hints of what’s to come. That’s why it’s so strange we haven’t picked up on the meaning behind Daenerys Targaryen’s hair until now, as Buzzfeed has pointed out.

The braiding tradition stems from the Dothraki – the nomadic army that fights alongside Daenerys.

The horsemen and women add braids to their hair after victory, and cut them off after defeat.

The mother of dragons has adopted a similar approach and, when you look back through the seasons, it becomes clear: Daenerys’ kickass hair is no accident. It’s a statement.

Her braids grew in number after the liberation of Slever’s Bay, and once again after her victory over the Lannister army.

Now, as she prepares to fight the White Walkers alongside Jon Snow, we can only hope her braids continue to increase in number and extravagance. The other option? Not even worth considering.
