Zoe Foster.

Sing if you know the words (or hum if you’re not a confident singer, or you’re in public): your lips are very chapped and dry*. So you put “something” on them. At this stage, it’s usually anything nearby, a gloss, a lipstick, whatever. Just something to coat them.

A little while on, and you’ve just closed a multi-million dollar deal/just finished straightening your hair/washed the mule, and you notice the dryness has not gone. Things are worse. So, you hunt down a “proper” lip balm. A Blistex, or Chapstick or paw paw ointment; whatever. Something that will supposedly nurture lips. But it still doesn’t help. An hour on you have visible flakes and you cannot, for the love of lip conditioning agents, get your lips un-dry.

To your shame, you have now started licking them in a poor and misguided attempt at nourishment, or at the very least, a few seconds of wet lippery. Horrible idea. And don’t even think about thinking about ripping off the flakes of dry skin with your teeth, you little terror. This is one of the all time Worst Ideas in the world, second only to sleeping with makeup on, and war. Your lips are incredible delicate, basically cheeks with a thin raincoat on, and you will make them bleed and a lot worse by ripping off the flakes.

And this was my postcode on Friday. My lips were cracked, and covered in thick, alluring flakes of dry skin. I knew why: 1) I have to stretch my lips to get my Invisalign in and out, which means they need extra TLC, which I had not given them, and 2) I applied foundation over my lips the other night to neutralise their colour before applying some almondy-nude lipstick. I DO THIS EVEN THOUGH I KNOW IT’S STUPID. Foundation will always dry your lips out excessively. Use lip primer instead, or a nude lip pencil.

With a long car ride and no suitable lip ointment* around, I began licking them and nibbling on the flakes like a FOOL. I knew better, of course I did, but that didn’t stop me, because I am a moron.

Thankfully, the solution for me (and now you) was nigh.

honey 380x509 Youll never believe what Zoe Foster does with honey

See! Honey!

The moment I reached our destination, I asked for some honey. Just normal honey, (actual lipsaver jar pictured) the kind you put on toast, or yoghurt, or hot chips, if you’re a weirdo. I smothered my poor lips in its sweet, sweet gooey goodness, just letting them enjoy the golden veil of sweetness until it had sunk in, ten minutes or so. (For an extra special treatment I could’ve GENTLY rubbed my lips with a warm washcloth first, to soften the flakes, but I was too impatient and not near a warm washcloth, or even a cold one for that matter.)

INSTANTLY, lips felt and looked happier. The honey had penetrated and left but a tiny bit of shine (I kept mischievous, hungry tongue away, be sure you do too) and I could actually smile without causing cracks. It was magnificent. I applied a few more rounds of honey over the day and lips went back to normal. Didn’t even need my usual lip balms.

Point of it all: When your lips are chapped and grim, turn to honey and win!

* I am referring here to occasional chapped lips caused by cosmetics or environment, not chronic chapped lips.

**I would not use anything with petroleum, menthol or camphor in these moments. I WOULD use something with lanolin or honey/paw paw. I recommend Lanolips 101 Ointment, Lanisoh, Suvana Certified Organic Paw Paw and Honey Balm or Pure Nutraceuticals Paw Paw Ointment.

I’ve struggled for years with my dry lips that always seem to flare up in winter (or when I do the same thing as you, and put foundation over the top of them. Naughty, naughty!) I find that Carmex is aaahmaazballs at curing chapped lips, but I think I will give the honey a go too!

How do you ask Zoe a question for this blog? I would really love to know how to get rid of pesky millia/pimples from décolletage, and keep it looking fab and glowy. I have attached photo of current state of affairs!

Currently I’m using witch hazel to get rid of millia/pimples on my décolletage but it doesn’t seem to be working.

I suffered with dry lips for years. I was working for a duty free company and the beauty girls felt so sorry for my swollen, dry lips that they tried heaps of products on me. The winner is Clarins Moisture Replenishing Lip Balm. I recommend it to everyone who has real ‘issues’.

I love Manuka honey for my lips.

Not only because of its bio-activity but because it’s quite thick and firm and clings to my lips. Some other honey varieties are a bit drippy.

Make your own natural lip-balm! It’s so incredibly easy. I’m sure if you google home made lip balm you’ll find the method but in a nutshell with a ratio of beeswax:olive oil about 1:3 or 1:4 melt both in a double boiler (i.e. the pot you’re melting in should not be directly on the stove but in another pot with water) then as it melts/before it boils take off stove and pour into an appropriate container, wait til it dries and solidifies and there you have it. Takes five minutes, lasts ages and all natural. I’m sure you can add some honey if you like. Google it, best thing I ever did, so cheap, a small amount of beeswax makes a ton and you can keep it in the fridge to last longer.

Edit: I love your articles Zoe, so helpful!

Question for Zoe or anyone who may have read Zoe’s post a few weeks ago about creating curls with a curling wand. At the time there was an ad for heat resistant gloves (I think they were white on the inside and cost about $10-15) and now I can’t find the ad. Can anyone help? I can find other gloves but only where they sell one – I want a glove for both hands so I can follow Zoe’s tip of swapping hands to curl both sides. Fingers crossed … thanks.

I have some questions that hopefully you / someone can help me with:
    - in a previous post you spoke about a hair straightener with different temperatures which can be used for 2nd & 3rd days. Which days do you use which temperatures and why?
    - do you think the new GHD hair dryer is good / worth the money?
    - I have a red birth mark on my neck. People often think it is a love bite and I used to get teased about it when I was younger. I have had laser treatments on it recently and it is a little bit lighter but not much. Any other suggestions re getting rid of it or covering it?
    Thank you!!

    Hi Zoe,

What are chronic chapped lips? Is it a diagnosed condition? (don’t laugh if you just mean, frequent, really, really chapped lips). In any case my lips are my problem area. Always dry and I commit the cardinal sins of not only biting them, but scratching and picking at them. I do it out of boredom for the stimulation (I suppose), irritation and sometimes when I’m anxious. I just can’t stop! They bleed sometimes, and at others just get red and maybe sore. Please please please if you have any advice for people like me I’d love to hear it. I know I should stop picking at them (step one) but it’s a habit I just can’t break.

Does anyone else have any ideas too?

Thanks Zoe, and love your posts :)

same same same baby – my doc told me when I was about 15 to always always wear lipstick or some sort of spf something on my lips because they are particularly delicate
My advice to YOU my friend is this:
Always carry and wear lipbalm as per Zoe’s advisement above – esp avoid petrochemicals as they will make it so much worse and they are in heaps of lip balms as they give the waxy texture
Always use lipstick that has SPF innit.
Never use ultra long lasting lipsticks – the ones you paint on, let dry and then apply balm over the top – they are murder on the lips.
Read Zoe’s lip balm column from a while back – should be able to search it above.

Thanks girls :) I’ll try that lip balm you suggested ladybird – wish me luck!

I currently use and love Nivia Repair and Protection, but the minute it dries out, my wandering fingers find their way up to my lips and I start picking at it again, usually without even realising. Gross I know, but I can’t stop. I have tried several products but it’s so hard to stop the impulse. Obviously the weaker they are, the more tingly they are which makes me keep attending to them! (grrrr). I’m terrible. Thanks again girls and hope your lips stay lovely, too.

PS, Ladybird, can I ask, why did you go to the doc about your lips in the first place? Were you a compulsive lip picker or was it just something you raised during an appointment?

I do exactly the same thing! When I’m nervous/stressed/anxious I pick at my lips something chronic, they bleed and look horrible. Makes wearing lipstick virtually impossible. I use Burt’s Bees lip balms however, as you said, it is the habit more than what I’m using on my lips that is the problem. It is such a hard habit to break…

Do you do it exclusively when your stressed? I have noticed I do it when I’m just doing nothing, like watching TV and zoning out if I can feel they are dry and peelable. I also do it when I’m anxious, too.

The Suvana balm Zoe recommends at the end of her article is GREAT. I’ve had lip issues for years and sought it out after she posted about it elsewhere.
Carmex has saved my bacon on many an occasion, especially for sore corners of the mouth. This can be caused by an imbalance between L-Lysine (not enough) and L-Argenine (too much). If I eat too many nuts or seeds (especially chia seeds) I get these sores. Also, if my fruit/vegie intake is down (like, because it’s Easter and theres chocolate to be consumed). Taking a couple of Lysine tablets 3-4 times a day gets rid of them quickly though, as does citrus juice.

But I digress. Suvana stuff is ace, as is Burts Bees tinted lip gloss.

Honey is so awesome- I do a manuka honey face mask all the time- I call it my manuka bazooka!! It’s awesome at fighting spots but softening skin and plumping, not man masks can do all that in one! “I would not use anything with petroleum in these moments..” Arguably I would say ever- petroleum prodz can contain dioxanes – a toxic carcinogen, and so drying and possibly the reason we feel we need to keep reapplying balm so often. I avoid like the plague!!

Honey gets my vote. I recently had a truly embarassing moment when I tripped and face-planted because my hands were full of shopping. I ended up with a massive graze on my chin that looked like someone had stuck a hunk of pizza on my face. For 72 hours it festered and spread. Then, after a panic visit to the local health food shop, I started applying Manuka honey. 72 hours later the sore was gone – not a trace of it left on my face.Truly. It was like watching a miracle at work. I’m a total convert – my latest purchase was a bottle of Manuka honey skin lotion with SPF 15….

I put honey on badly cracked hands when I get excema too and my ear lobes get dry when I wear cheap earrings, same deal.

ps As a South Australian and Adelaide Hills resident, I say go the Beerenberg honey! http://www.beerenberg.com.au/

I actually use honey as a face mask 3 times a week. I leave it on for 10-15 mins then wash off with warm water. People always comment on how glowing my skin is and how well I look.

if you’re prone to break outs, it’s probably better to use Manuka honey instead of normal honey as it has antibacterial agents in it. manuka honey has ratings as well so anything that is NPA10+/MGO 100 (most have one or the other) or more is good for your skin. The higher the better but it can get expensive.

I second using Manuka honey over regular honey. The stuff is AMAZING and has worked wonders on my skin redness and marks. Can’t reccomend it enough!

I hadn’t thought of using honey as lip balm but it’s so obvious! Genius!

I have used a honey and brown sugar face scrub that’s a real winner. Recipe here for any who want (it’s not very precise).

I think I’ve heard you don’t recommend Lucas Paw Paw ointment, can you tell me why? Genuinely curious. Thank you!

I stoped using the Lucas paw paw ointment as soon as I found out it was petroleum based. There are many petro chemical free paw paw ointments out there, like the ones Zoe suggested above. At the moment I’m using ‘Natures are – all natural Paw Paw Balm’, its in a pink tube, I think I discovered it at Woolies but i’ve spied it in Priceline as well. It has heaps of other goodies in it too such as shea butter, macadamia nut oil, mango seed butter. Very moisturising, gives lips a pleasing shine and not at all
      sticky.

zoe i dont know how you do it but your beauty wizardry has once again arrived with impeccable timing!
i’ve been having a MAJOR struggle with dry lips for the past 2 days. none of my lip balms were working so today iv been regularly applying actual moisturiser which has actually been pretty good but definitley not reversed the problem…
so i am off to get some honey!
thanks for reading my mind yet again zoe!

I love the lip moisturizer by Malin and Goetz. You can get it at Mecca Cosmetica and, whilst not as cheap as honey, it’s still good value. Highly recommended.
