I had a lovely comment (on this very website) the other day from a very sweet crumpet, saying that as she applied her makeup, she was considering what I (Zoe) would think if I saw her makeup that day.
Now, obviously I would say something complimenty and kind, because we simply don’t give enough compliments to each other, and there is always room for more kindness in the world. (Cue sparkles and unicorns.)
(But seriously, if you do see a woman with a terrific smile or hair or makeup or shoes or frock, say something! There is a very good chance she put in some extra effort, which is precisely why you noticed whatever it was you noticed, so give her a verbal high five, why don’t you? You’ll feel good, she’ll feel wonderful and somewhere out there pixie will finally be granted her golden wings.)
In a (admittedly egocentric) way, the comment above made me think of all those times we do our hair and makeup with a particular person or (potential) response in mind. Dinner with a lovely gent for example. The first day of a new job. A night out with your girlfriends. Meeting the in-laws (or the outlaws as I like to call them! Ha ha ha ha!!!) for the first time. Yourself because you are feeling wonderful, or feeling unwonderful and needing a boost.
I know, for example, when I was single, and being all cute and coy and sleazy at bars, I would wear more eye makeup than was required or even legal in some states. This was done for the specific ‘enjoyment’ of the male population at said bars, although I have since discovered after actually, you know talking to men (instead of spilling vodka pineapple on their jeans as I aggressively shimmy-barged them out of my Designated Dance Zone™), that smoky eyes in low lighting kind of makes a lot of us look, well, the same.
Of course, being an overbearing know-all, upon learning this I wrote a passionate post about Being The Girl Not Wearing Smoky Eye Makeup When Out At Night, and instead being the one wearing just pretty winged liner, or a bright lip, which not only means you will still look fresh at 2am, but you look different and exciting compared to everyone else doing smoked up eyes. Most who read the article ignored me. Khloe Kardashian definitely did.
These days, my makeup and hair styling is a bit more low-key than when I was a full-time beauty editor, except for when I am doing book publicity, or am hosting an event or beauty workshop. Then I pay (some might say unnecessary and ludicrous) amounts of attention to hair and the nail, lipstick and eye shadow colour I wear, because if I am going to inculcate innocent dames to wear mint coloured nail polish or mango coloured lip gloss, then I sure as sausage need to back up these wild demands by doing them myself. It’s far from a problem or hassle, obviously. It is an utter delight. One of my most cherished aspects of being a beauty bossyboots is “having” to look “the part.”
But it’s not always cupcakes and Jesus juice for us makeup-wearers and hairstyle-do-ers and nail-polish-lovers. A friend of mine, let’s call her… Bessica, has an older sister who is The Queen of All Scrutiny. Amazingly, she is quite an influence on dear Bessie, despite the fact she is almost definitely a witch, and I thought Bessie would be able to see that, even in a dark room, with a small kitten laying peacefully over her eyes, as a kind of cute face hammock.
Within moments of seeing Bessica, a lass who is so charming I am surprised Pandora has not yet made an actual charm in her likeness, big sis will be commenting on her skin, or her roots, or her chipped nails. Bessica always handles these bitchy barbs with enormous grace, which BAFFLES THE SHIP OUT OF ME, because not only should she be telling her sister to shut it, but – and hold onto your Havianas for this bit – Bessica actively polishes herself up before she sees her sister. Her own sister! It’s an outrage. I ought to call the coppers on her.
Another dame I know and adore has a boyfriend who is yet to see her sans eye makeup – she sleeps in her liner and shadow (I’ll just pause while you gasp at the horrible things this is doing to her skin and eyes), and who thinks her extremely fetching and fluttery lashes are real, and not, in fact, a lovely set of silkies from Love Those Lashes. This has been going on for over 18 months and the façade doesn’t look like being dropped anytime soon.
I think it’s preposterous. But then, I did pop a layer of mascara onto my bare, sleepy face before boot camp this morning, because I figure if I am going to have sweaty gross hair, and a cherry tomato red face, and smell like wet carpet, then I am allowed to have pretty lashes.
Is there anyone you “do” your beauty for? (Aside of yourself obviously, which is the finest person to do it for.) Does it please you to do this? Or make you a bit twitchy and resentful?
I would certainly advocate you do it for positive reasons, but realise this can’t and won’t always be the way; sometimes you’re just gonna have to suck it up.
Mia, for example, refuses to let me into the Mamamia building unless my curls are just so and my blush is perfectly contoured and my cuticles are impeccable, but I love her so I just get on with it.

I wear my best jewellery, dresses, and makeup (light but polished) for when I see my grandmother. She is from Pakistan and she likes to see me all dressed up in traditional clothes (think saris, heavy gold/ruby jewellery, salwar kameez, and the like). It makes her soooo happy. And apparently my personality and looks are a lot like her daughter (my aunt, who died before I was born) so she is always commenting on the resemblance! lol. I get all dressed up when visiting my mom too, as she really likes it. For everyone else, I’m take-it-or-leave-it, scruffy and casual.
BTW zoe all your different tips and recommended prods over the years have helped me soooo much..thanks! I don’t live in Australia, but I am a fan regardless–followed your fruity blog, your primped blog, have bought Air Kisses, and lol at your tumblr.

I wear make up most days (always to work or when going out to something with friends, or just out and about). I have learnt to wear just enough that people say “oh, I didn’t realise you had make up on!” when actually I am wearing mineral powder, bronzer, a little blush, mascara… If only they knew.
I think I wear it for myself, because I like how I look in it – tragic, perhaps, that I don’t like how I look without it – but my theory is, you’re never too fat for make up, handbags or good shoes.
After I had surgery last year I felt so god-awful and pale and bored that I spent a night GHD-ing the shit out of my hair and then did my face, then watched a movie. Alone. In my apartment. I felt like a real person again!

I do my make-up for me because i love it and i love me more whilst wearing it!
And that makes me happy

great article Zoe, thanks be to you, once again! Wondering if you can help me out with a transclusent setting powder, i always seem to ghost face in photos (and none of my products have any SPF in them) can you recommend a good transclusent powderthat sets well? also is pressed or loose powder better for avoiding the old oil slick?

your friend is still wearing overnight make up eighteen months in??? i lasted about two!! i had to stop though because i was breaking out and also my eyes come morning were becoming puffy and cloudy. not really the effortless chic look i was going for…..
also Bessica’s sister doesn’t sound like a very nice person :S, as the old adage goes if you haven’t got anything nice to say…
loading...
I hate putting on make-up & I hate taking it off even more!
I only wear it a couple of times a year for special occasions, I couldn’t stand the hassle & time involved in wearing it every day!
loading...
I wear makeup almost every time I leave the house because I have a terribly shiny forehead. I was teased at high school and have had a complex about it ever since.
I have no idea what causes it, and when I try to cover it up, it never lasts long.
loading...
Bessica is more golden than a golden globe! Good grief! I still haven’t stopped laughing.
LOOOOOVE your writing zoe – I wish it were plastered all over Sydney so I could chuckle everywhere I go.
ps. I’ve never thought about this but I suppose I mostly do my looks for me (because it’s fun!) and if I get any compliments thats a bonus.

Dear Zoe,, slightly off topic, but how are your Invisaligns going? I have a consultation to see if I’m a candidate for them, and I’d love to know how you are travelling (I read your previous blog when you’d had them only a short time). Many thanks xxx
loading...
I am getting Invisalign next month and it’s a dream of mine to have perfect teeth, any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated!
loading...
I had invisalign done and couldn’t be more happy with the result. You can’t stop me beaming. My avatar shows it done about half way through the process. Worth every penny. I have to wear retainers every night for 2 years to keep it happening but I’ll wear them forever if the result stays!
loading...
Hi! My Invisalign are fine. I have my attachers on now (little… “horns” that are bonded to your teeth to help with grip and pressure of retainers) and they were not the beeeeest fun at first because the retainers are difficult to get off when they’re tight and new, but as with all of it, I am now used to them and don’t notice. Two months down!
loading...
I had Invisalign 2/3 years ago. I am completely happy with the results. My only concern would be, because of all the brushing my gums receded a little. Very happy with my teeth though. I have a permanent retainer attached.

Zoe, your writing is a breath of fresh air. I love how you seem to write an internal monologue that’s so witty! And takes a turn in the middle of a sentence. It was a pleasure to read a longer, thought-provoking piece by you, not just your quick intros to a how-to piece. Hopefully we read some more like this from you. x

I am a serial complimenter – I spend hours commuting every day, you have to do something and any great skirt or pair of shoes heading up the carriage steps will catch the eye – and people are always really pleased until they turn around and see me looking like a 100 year old bag lady with bad hair. You can almost see them thinking “if she thinks I look good then I’m in real trouble”. Sorry about that, ladies ….

Does anyone have any tips to avoid your makeup sweating off? I have just moved to Singapore and I find it difficult/impossible to arrive at work with my makeup looking like it did when I applied it at home in aircon! I don’t understand how the locals always look so put together in this humidity.
loading...
When you find out can you let me know? It’s so bloody hot here my sunscreen slides off.
loading...
There is a topical cream you can get that will stop you sweating, you only need to apply it once a week or so, I think the active ingredient is called Glycopyrrolate (sp?). Maybe that’s what the locals use?
loading...
Zoe may shank me – this is probably oh so bad for the skin / life. But I use hair spray! I just give my face a once over, holding the can about 20cm from my face – it seems to really work!
loading...
Any drag queen will confirm the hair spray trick works.
But it is not to be encouraged for reasons more obvious than why we don’t eat concrete.
Instead, use a primer under all makeup, and then set makeup with loose powder. Finally, set with a ‘fixing’ spray. I use Skindinavia, but MAC does a great one, too.
loading...
Thanks Zoe – will definitely try your suggestion, the hair spray option sounded a bit too extreme for me!
loading...
Zoe, just wondering when you’re going to a special event, do you get your make-up professionally done? Or are you confident and capable enough to know/ believe you do a decent job yourself?
I’ve had my make-up professionally done for a few special occasions and am always amazed at the staying power of the whole deal AND the generally better overall affect. Can normal people manage that much with a DYI effort?
Thanks!

Hi Zoe and any other gorgeous reader…
Does anyone have a tip for me?? I am 22 and I’ve been shaving my legs since 13. I’ve noticed now that even though I shave the same amount (once every 1-1.5 weeks) my legs get all bumpy and red dotty. Nothing has changed in my approach – I use soap to shave and douse my legs in moisturiser afterwards. My legs are also not as soft as they once were. The hair is thick and black now though which SUCKS… It used to be white. I have just become financially independent so wax salons or laser are unfeasible!! (Don’t worry Zoe I still get my eyebrows done professionally – but that’s it!)
If anyone has any suggestions I’d be grateful.
X
loading...
Hi lbx, have you tried shaving in the same direction as the hair grows? I get the same thing but doing this definitely helps
Also, if you have sensitive skin then I’d steer clear from using soap when you shave – it’s too irritating – so maybe try a shaving foam for sensitive skin. Good luck!
loading...
You can wax them yourself cheaply… if the hairs are getting thicker it will make them finer. My Mum used the epilady for years and now has only a few hairs every now and then, so that might be a good (but slightly painful and lengthy) alternative. I’ve just started going to laser clinics australia where its really cheap for laser, no complaints so far. Maybe see if they have any deals in your area?
loading...
Try bath oil or just olive oil ( bit smelly but does wonders!)
loading...
Thank you so much! I’m going to try all suggestions
!!!! Yay
loading...
I use an epilator – will hurt the first few times particularly because your hairs are now thicker from shaving, however after a while the hair will get sparser and softer and lighter. In summer I sometimes shave in between epilating to prevent ingrowns. I have used it on my underarms and bikini, and the hairs have virtually stopped growing back. YES many women will say it’s painful etc, but after a while your skin gets used to it, and it’s no worse than waxing. It’s just so convenient and spending $150 every 5 years is pretty affordable. Check out http://www.shavershop.com.au
loading...
Epilady’s are the best invention. I have been using one for about 6 years after I gave up waxing after having children and no time (or at least I didn’t want to spend the time I did have getting waxed!). My underarms basically don’t grow much any more and my bikini line the same. It kills the first time but you must keep going!!! So much cheaper and easier and more convenient than waxing x x

yep! so true lisa!

Hi guys,
what brand is the best to use?
loading...
I have a Braun Silk-Epil which works really well.
loading...
I tried one for a few months but I found that it seemed to break more hairs than it pulled out
I would have had a better result with shaving. Not sure what I was doing wrong, and it wasn’t a cheap one either.

i had some major insecurities as a teenage (duh who doesnt) and thus developed a verrry cakey makeup look, FULL and over the top face every single day. my family berrated me, so did my more honest friends, but i was too insecure, it was what i hid behind, and somehow it carried on in to my early 20s.
I can honestly say that it is Zoe’s makeup philosophy, how-tos and just general encouragement that have given me enough confidence to finally tone down my look. i truly have a much better and healthier approach to make up now. i use it to bring out my natural beauty, rather than cover it. i have never felt so comfortable in my own face!! and i have you zoe to thank for that.
so…THANKYOU!!
and all the best for your impending nuptials! how exciting
ps- anyone that has not got a copy of ‘amazing face’ yet, stop what you’re doing and BUY.IT.

I do my makeup for me – mostly.
I have always had thin, blondish eyebrows, and whilst Amazing Face asks me to grow them in, there’s not enough to grow! However, Chanel Blonde Eyebrow Pencil makes it all lovely again and I look like I actually have what I wish I did.
Similarly, a little Diorshow Waterproof mascara makes may eyelashes visible without panda eyes. A little tinted moisturiser, bronzer and lipgloss and I feel good.
Nights out of course is a fun time to experiment… then I go hiking/camping and nothng other than sunscreen touches my face…

Zoe, I love this writing style of yours the best. I enjoyed your first two fiction books very much and am looking forward to the third (am not sure I will be able to read your dating textbook without upsetting hubby
) but it’s a different style altogether in your novels.
This extended piece – lengthier than your usual beauty advice guides – only highlights for me the gorgeousness of your Mamamia manner and I hope we get to see it more and more. ie as well as your pearls of wisdom on how-to, your thoughts and opinions too.
(You have a cat; you can’t possibly object to others being greedy and demanding.)
loading...
I only wear makeup to work or if I’m going out socially otherwise I can’t be bothered if anyone’s interested? Hahahah
loading...
Zoe.. And mamamia crew. I need some help. I’m struggling to find good foundation. I have a terminally red nose so need good coverage there but rest of face is fine and I could really get away with tinted moisturizer. Help clearly needed.
loading...
Use a green corrector, a bit of normal concealer if your tinted moisturiser is particularly sheer, and then apply tinted moisturiser as usual.
loading...
Oh I am excited to respond because I was you a few years ago!
While Fi’s suggestion is a valid one, I personally found this too many products, too much hassle and you really need to be sure you apply it well else you risk looking green and or cakey.
I ended up shirking liquid foundations in favour of light but buildable natural looking powder foundation. Shiseido do a good one but I have since moved onto MAC Studio Fix – foundation is done in 1-2 min, redness is covered, and after 5 min it settles in and looks naturally semi-matte. Just a dab on concealer on blemishes and sorted!
Mineral makeup I also found to be great for covering redness but was a bit too heavy and line-enhancing for my liking.
Good luck!
loading...
Hi SH
I have a some redness too! I use Napoleon foundation and their powder as well which has a ‘green’ base to it and takes away the redness.
Dermalogica also do a green tinted SPF 15 mosturiser to combat redness (goes on green but does blend so dont worry too much about the colour!)
loading...
Hi SH – do you apply your concealer before or after your foundation/TM? I agree that green based primers are fantastic (and you can just apply where you need it, not all over if you don’t want to), and it depends how many steps you want to do, but if you conceal on top of your base product, you can just apply extra coverage where needed. I personally love Smashbox High Definition Concealer or MAC Studio Finish Concealer – they both work a treat to cover my annoying redness.
loading...
Err I’m tired clearly. Did not mean to enter my name as SH as well!

As a teenager I used to apply make-up every time I left the house, since that’s what my mum did and obviously I just followed suit. But now, I’m not that kind of person. I’ll wear make-up for “events” (family gatherings, parties, heading out to dinner, etc.) but the rest of the time, I wear moisturizer with SPF and SPF lipblam.
And I also try to give compliments regularly. It always makes other people smile and I like that.

My last boyfriend, of 18 months, never saw me without mascara on. With blonde eyelashes naturally, I look positively alien-like without mascara… so I would just leave it on when I slept, and reapply when I washed my face in the morning. Nothing extreme like doing makeup before he awoke… just never took it off before bed!
loading...
Im a natural blondie too. Can’t recommend enough getting an eyelash tint. Makes my makeup-less life so much easier!
loading...
Love you Zoe.
My whole life I have typically been an au naturale girl except for a strong lip (I am from the Poppy lipstick generation), but since having kids I have needed a bit of help in the looking awake department.
I have been following your tips and videos Zoe but was devastated when you said recently that the over 40s shouldnt wear shimmer, just when I have got the hang of your eyeshadow tips and was proudly wearing my shimmery smokey brown eye.
I do have you in my head when I’m doing my makeup in the morning.

bring back Poppy lippies!! a tad drying but SO FAB

I wear my makeup for my daughters. My mum barely wore makeup growing up, and by the time I was “coming of age” and needed advice she was utterly useless and totally uninspiring (she made up for it in other ways, but still…)
I want my kids to know that appearance matters, not because it should, just because it does. And I want them to be proud of me!
http://the-accidental-housewife.blogspot.com.au/
loading...
Wow.
I don’t want my daughters to think they should wear makeup every day; it’s bad for their skin and they are beautiful the way they are.
I wear makeup if going out at night or for special events (weddings and the like) – NOT for work unless I’ve been unwell and look sickly, NOT for school pickup or drop off, NOT for daytime outings to the shops or the movies or anywhere else, NOT to catch up with friends for coffee.
My kids are proud of me because I’m made of awesome.
loading...
I do wear make-up but its minimal- when I’m working or going out its a bit of mascara, concealer under my eyes, bronzer, maybe some clear lip gloss and that’s it. My daughter is 3 and I don’t want her to think she’s not beautiful as she is, so I need to lead by example. I love it that you said you’re “made of awesome”. Brilliant.
loading...
I’m sure that when they are teenagers they will NOT think I am made of awesome, but like me and my mum they will come around in the end
loading...
You’re made of awesome just for using that phrase! LIKE!

It’s so cool to see made of awesome catching on. It’s kind of from here (one of the places using it, anyway):

Zoe clearly does not have an overbearing older sister. I have lived in Bessica’s shoes and now what it’s like to ‘prepare’ to see your worst critic face to face. It sucks!!!
loading...
I thought Zoe was the youngest of several siblings.
I’m the elder girl in my family and it’s my younger sister who is the formidable makeup/fashion judge! Sisters in general are the greatest critics.
loading...
I always wear makeup to work or if i need to be official. But thats it. But i do hold back on letting men in my life see my insane curly hair. Weird i know
loading...
I always wear makeup to work – it’s my warpaint, and tend to slap on a bright pink or red lippy if it’s a power day!
I don’t wear any makeup (except mascara which is compulsory for my albino lashes) around my husband’s family who are all very au naturale and soccer-ish.
Completely agree re telling people if they look great.. I have a pair of hot pink/purple striped low boot/shoes (I know that sounds disgusting) which look totally amazing on and have literally had a carload of girls stop beside me in the city and roll down their window to shout out “We LOVE YOUR SHOES!”. Made me feel a million bucks
So I now do tell people if they look great, including, occasionally, random strangers…!
(and thanks Zoe, I always love your articles)

God damn you’re a funny ham

This is going to smack of stalker but…. I saw you twice over the weekend Zoe at a local cafe and both times you looked lovely. I thought…”wow she is even prettier in real life”. Crumpets, please help a desperate gal out. My delicious (read gorgeous, tall and spectacular) step-daughter just turned 15 and I am stumped for gift ideas, as with most kids these days, she already has everything! I was thinking a makeup lesson and some products would be a cool gift. We are in Perth. Any ideas of great places? Mecca? MAC? ???
Help would be muchly appreciated!
loading...
I reckon that is an awesome idea! MAC is super fab. Just one thing… I wouldn’t call it a lesson, maybe just that you’re going to get her on a fun afternoon out which includes visiting the MAC counter and getting her face made up by a professional and she can choose some products to take home
loading...
easy- get her Amazing Face (zo’s beauty bible), let her write a wish list, then go shopping. done.
Zoe will teach her how to use makeup better than a MUA with heavy bronzer and thick foundation (sorry for being stereotypical) my 14 year old (after she read amazing face) went from wearing orange, unblended foundation and dark black eyeliner (she probably picked it up from a girl in the bathroom aahah) to a lovely more natural tinted moisturiser, top lash eyeliner look,i am so glad i bought her amazing face (and one for me as well) she even wrote a little prodz wish list after reading it for her christmas presents:) Hope this helps! x
loading...
Thanks ladies, alas Bella, whilst she is gorgeous, she also possesses the attention span of a goldfish… I have this Amazing book already and she has glanced at it, but as it doesn’t possess teenage boy hormones and pimples, it did not hold her attention long! I am quite skilled in the makeup area myself, and she has asked me for lessons, but I am after all only a lowly stepmum, not a “real”.makeup artist, so she is more likely to listen to them tell her not so much eyeliner, blah de blah blah…
loading...
I would perhaps even suggest visiting somewhere like The Body Shop. I did this for my daughter and the girls there were great. It is also somewhere that she could afford to purchase from herself in the future.
loading...
Mecca is awesome. I go to the one in Garden City, Booragoon.
They can tell her what would be best for her skin type, coloring etc.
Body shop also do this if you prefer products that aren’t tested on animals.
loading...
A make up course is an awesome idea. I wish someone gave ME that when I was a teenager. You sound like a lovely stepmum too. xx
loading...
MAC can be a little heavy handed for a teenager. I LOVE MAC now I’m in my mid-thirties and need the stronger coverage and pigments etc. Mecca would be excellent, or even Aveda for some gentler, more age appropriate and “good for younger skin” options. I love my Aveda cosmetics, still use their skincare, but their colours tend to fall off me and don’t have the impact MAC and Chanel have for me these days
loading...
I’m not sure… if she’s confident with the way she looks and hasn’t asked for make-up advice, I’d say don’t. You don’t want her to think that she’s not beautiful the way she is (and she sounds stunning!) You could definitely take her to a spa for a mani/ pedi, a facial or a massage though… those things work for everyone!
p.s: you sound like an amazing, loving stepmum
loading...
Does anyone have the reverse? Someone they purposely don’t wear makeup for?
I love wearing make up and getting manicures, especially bright colours, and do it for everyone (and myself) because it makes me feel happy and bright … except when I see one friend. I dress down when I see her. No make up. No polish. Daggy clothes because sometimes she makes me feel like I’m shallow and silly if I’m into make up and fashion.
Btw, big fan of your work Zoe and love love lurve Amazing Face – thank you.

Yes, I have a friend I feel like that about!! Teehee

I”m a very natural kinda girl. I wear make up but most of the time you can’t really tell.
My work face and going out face tends to be the same, except for eye liner and that’s it.
i have tried playing with colour and eye shadow but it’s just not me.

I do my make-up for me, because after 38.5 years of not doing it right and then getting my hands on Amazing Face and investing in a makeup tutorial at mecca cosmetica (best $$ I’ve ever spent on myself as it redeemable on makeup), I now have half a clue as to how to do it properly. I was the original brown-lipstick girl (She ‘goddess’ shade, loved it in the 90s and couldn’t quite figure out why it wasnt working any more…) and I now have more pink and watermelon shades of lippy and gloss than, well, most people. I’ve also discovered that pale pink eye shadow makes me look a) awake! and b) pretty. I’ve never been a ‘pretty’ girl before. Now I wear a pale pink cream shadow base with a pink-ish powder pressed over the top; and some pink blush along with bronzer and transculent powder, and some melon-y lip gloss. I look ten years younger. It’s freaking amazing. In short, I’m fully loving myself sick in my makeup and I love wearing it now.
loading...
I’m with you! At 38.5 I am experimenting with new colors on my eyes and going for a bold lip occasionally, trying blush etc and it’s all thanks to Zoe. Loads of positive comments from girlfriends who havn’t changed make up look in years and now are looking for tips from me!

have done the same last year at the age of 39.10 and the book changed my life. I look heaps better heading into my 40s and its all due to Zoe.

Gosh I love reading this, girls.
Love yourselves sick and then back to health again!!

I’m one of those annoying happy shiny people who like to see the world as a happy shiny place. If I see something that makes me smile, I will always say something. On the odd occasion it happens to me, it’s so lovely. How nice to have someone say what a lovely lip colour, or how pretty your ponytail is or what a charming frock.
I’m a makeup girl who always wears makeup, but not in a caked on kind of manner. I don’t have to for anyone but myself.

I am the “very sweet crumpet” to whom Zoe refers, and aside from doing my makeup in preparation for fated run-ins with a fabulous “beauty bossyboots”, I find that these days I mostly do my makeup for myself.
Being at home with a small baby means that 90% of the time, nobody sees my efforts except my son and my fat, sleepy dog. I’d like to say I do it for my husband too, but in reality, by the time he gets home from work, the illusion of glam domestic goddess which I set out to create at 6am is well and truly over. In time for his arrival, I’ve usually swapped the loose hair for a practical ponytail; the “I’m actually planning on setting foot outside today” clothes for PJs; and the makeup for a bare face, courtesy of the shower I had to have in order to fix the sweat situation I found myself in when pushing the pram around my hilly suburb.
So much of myself has disappeared since I had my baby, and whilst I totally love my new life, I find that doing my makeup and hair allows me to hold onto bits of the old me that I do miss. Sometimes it’s hard not being able to fit into your old clothes, or not having appropriate occasions to wear your amazing heels, but if my makeup looks nice and my hair is respectable, I still remind myself of me when I look in the mirror.
Of course, I also fantasise about running into my ex one day (the only ex I’d care to make jealous) and him being all like, “Wow. So she’s a great mother to a gorgeous baby and she looks this glam doing it? I wish I hadn’t been such a fuckwit” (pre-baby weight minus 10kg also features in this fantasy, along with an outfit nobody could ever push a pram in without looking utterly absurd).

Love your comment! I can totally relate. I can’t remember the last time I wore something that didn’t have an elasticated waist band or come from the bonds range, let alone do my hair and make up. I even have to get my long locks chopped because the babies kept grabbing my hair and it hurt!
Oh babies….. gotta love em!

And I loved what you had to say above (I presume it’s the same Kate) about getting all sweaty when pushing your pram. Nobody tells you how sweaty you can get when pushing a pram! It’s a bloody good workout, especially when hills are involved. And don’t even get me started on the sweat patches you discover when taking off the Baby Bjorn… dear God!

Embarrassing Fan – I feel exactly the same! Even if I just slick on some lipgloss and cover my ‘still recovering from not being on the pill’ pimples I feel so much better hanging out at home with bub and more confident!
It is so good for the soul to look after yourself & reading MamaMia comments always makes me feel like my old self again, not just a dowdy SAHM!

I usually just wear enough make-up so that I feel comfortable and feel like I look my best. I wear make-up when I walk my dog because people stop to talk to me when they see my little Bichon Frise. They like to pat her. I think my dog is pretty and I want to look nice when i’m out with her.
Zoe, I just read your new book ‘The Younger Man’. I loved it!. Your sense of humour and writing style is brilliant. ‘little flirtrude over there’ p.174

I’m one of those can’t go to work or the movies or any where thats an occasion without my makeup kind of girls, but since having Zoe’s book and reading her blogs I seem to have toned everything down a bit which is a relief to say.. But still do the whole, ok next is Zoe’s bronzing tip of the ’3′
But yes, i still do my makeup everyday, and mainly for myself…
These days I’m fortunate enough to have a boyfriend who questions why I bothered straightening my hair on a Sunday night for a night on the couch cause ‘you’re hair looks good anyway’ rather than the Ex who when you just couldnt be bothered to do the whole face/hair extravaganza to duck down to the corner shop for some milk would look at you and remark “whats happening with your hair or what happened to your makeup”
Grrrr – should have known he wasnt the right one when he would spend more time in front of the mirror than me and physically punch the wall if he had a bad haircut…

Wow pardon me but your ex sounds so vain!!

Hahah no need for the pardon.. you are exactly right…

Unrelated, but I finally tried dry shampoo yesterday after reading last wk’s post- best thing EVER!!! I have super thick, long hair that needs washing pretty much every two days and is painful to wash and dry- hello dry shampoo!!! I brought it in to work on my night shifts to show the girls, and have converted half the Emergency Department!!
loading...
It’s so perfect for those 15 hour weekend shifts, when my hair is all lank from too many head-in-hands moments! I’m beginning to convert all the interns, too!

i do my makeup for myself every day, but will always make a special effort when seeing my grandmother now as she has always been so beautifully polished and i want her to see me the same!
I’ve been catching up with all your beauty posts and videos over the last few months since ‘discovering you’ zoe.
my boyfriend loves and i have also received so many comments on my new natural makeup look that has come with this- tinted moisturiser, bronzer, sometimes a bright lip or a brown eyeshadow – in comparison to the heavy look I had before because I had no idea.
Thanks so much!

Couldn’t agree more! I have been watching you from alllll the way over in London and I can’t get enough of your posts! You’re incredible Zoe – keep ‘em coming!

Actually I too have been guilty of getting ready with you in mind! This was while painting my nails, as I was attending your book signing the next day. OPI Tickle my France-y, btw. And the book signing was marvellous, felt very privileged to attend.

I primarily wear makeup for myself. Of course it’s nice to look good at work and when catching up with friends, but I just feel so much more myself with my face on. That said, if it doesn’t fit my schedule I am confident enough to go without. Last night my partner hosted a role playing game (which I play in) and the other (male) players came to our house. Because I knew I wouldn’t have time to shower after the game I did so beforehand and was thus without makeup. No one made a comment and they are used to seeing me in my PJs without a lick of makeup.
I tend to put more effort into makeup for meetings with people I haven’t met before (including first dates) but my mood and how much time I have also dictate makeup choices. I wear a minimum of powder and lipstick every day, however (and eye makeup not very often).

Yeah, I only put on makeup for a night out, mostly so you can tell I am dressed up. If it’s rooly fancy, then I do slutty-eyes
But – as yet, I have never had a boyfriend who liked me in makeup. I mean, they don’t care if I wear it, but they all prefer me without it. I wonder if these means they don’t like makeup or that my application of it leaves something to be desired???

Since discovering Amazing Face/ Mamamia/ Zoe’s Youtube vids; I have cleaned out my make up cases, had a facial, started my cleansing routine both morning & night religiously, bought the Eco Tools brush set, a fuschia lip colour & a YSL eye palette, taught myself the smokey eye, simple eye & perfected my bronzer to blush to illuminator ratio…. All in 3 weeks.
Then last week I got my first: “Your make up looks lovely today!” from a co-worker.
Zoe you are a cyber-magician!
loading...
Seconded!
I did a ‘messy top-knot’ yesterday for the first time ever, after having watched you do it in the dry shampoo vid – the possibility of this particular up-do never having occurred to me before, being a ponytail kind of girl. I got so many compliments!
Thus I did it again today (when you’re on to a good thing…) and shazam! Same thing. *blush*
Best thing of all – messy topknot takes about 30 seconds as opposed to my normal do which needs drying, straightening etc etc
Magician indeed. x

I know this is terrible but I often only bother to wear makeup in case I bump into my ex or his new gfriend or one of his family members/friends.

You are SO FAR from the only one doing this….

I know a few women who won’t let their men see them sans makeup. One was a year into their marriage (after being together 5 years before that) before he saw her bare face. Naturally, he asked her if she was sick.
This only cemented the problem…

Oh my gosh! How awkward!

Zoe, are you able to do a post on keeping your eyeshadow on all day long? All my friends seem to be able to keep there’s on but mine rubs off! I have to reapply in the afternoon if I’m going out that evening.
I’ve tried switching brands (I currently use Bobbi Brown palette) and I’ve used primer too. Nothing seems to work!

Hi roserusso,
I find using an eyeshadow primer makes a world of difference to the staying power of your eyeshadow.
I have tried a few that all seem to work really well: Estee Lauder’s DoubleWear Eyeshadow Base, MAC Paint Pot Eyeshadow Base, Australis Eyeshadow Primer and I have also heard the NARS eyeshadow primer is fabulous too.
Also, don’t put any foundation or powder on your eyes. I start with my base everywhere but, and then dab some eyeshadow primer onto my eyelids with my finger before applying eyeshadow.
Hope this helps!

I do apply a little foundation And / or concealer to my lids before setting with a little loose powder, then applying a creme eyeshadow set by powder shadow, or just a swipe or two of powder shadow. This makes my eyeshadow last all day. I don’t use primers but I do prime. Works for me.
loading...
Primers help, the best is made by Nars in my opinion. But some shadows, even high end ones just don’t have staying power. It could also be that your eyelids are especially oily, or that you are touching your eyes throughout the day but don’t realize it. I also find applying powder eyeshadows with brushes, not fingers or sponges, gives a longer lasting finish. Not sure why.
Loreal’s Infallible eyeshadows last all day, and are great quality for the price. Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre eyeshadows also have great staying power. If you have a browse on Make Up Alley or search for bloggers reviews of any eyeshadows you’re interested in you should be able to get reliable info on their staying power. Temptalia especially always mentions length of wear in reviews.

Creme eyeshadow first! Always. Then powder shadow. Stays all day. (Do some foundation or concealer over the eyelids first for extra perfection.)
loading...
Ok. I will try this in the morning – fingers crossed! I’m guessing the creme shadow is in my palette already. I will investigate as I’m a newbie at all this

I use “too faced – shadow insurance” Avail from kit cosmetics in myer. Works wonders for my oily eyelids. I also wears matte cream shadow as a base.

I might give this a whirl if all else fails. Thanks Carms.

I always used to find that too. Now I use primer. Couple of key pointers that if I don’t adhere to, it doesn’t work too well. I have to use enough – if I don’t have enough on, my eye shadow slides right off. Also, after having applied eye primer, I have to give it a moment to set.
I put on my facial moisturiser, then eye primer, then face primer (giving my eye primer a minute to set), eye shadow… etc etc.
Have you tried some different primers? Good luck!
loading...
I don’t have a specific eye primer I only use a face primer. Maybe it’s my tinted moisturiser and too much moisture is making it slide off during the day.
I’ve used Napoleon’s auto pilot and Face of Australia primers. I find FOA to be the best and much much cheaper than Napoleons.
loading...
Thanks guys! I usually do apply a little foundation (or tinted moisturiser during the day) over my eyelids but I will try a bit of concealer too.
I use Face of Australia primer before applying foundation.
I will try and use the creme eyeshadow first and apply a bit more than usual. I must have oily eyelids… I don’t really rub or touch my eyes often. It just is all streaky by mid-afternoon.
Drives me bananas

Oh I love this conversation! And you, Zoe, I love you because you are quite clearly all of our best friend and if we happen to see you at a bar without a drink in your hand we will buy you the nicest cocktail on the list.
Anyway. I dress up for my colleagues and customers at work. At the moment I am favouring demure, 1950s kind of dresses, with sweet pink cheeks and a little mascara and a pretty, rosy lip colour.
I also spend a few days a week hanging out with my children, and seeing school mums and orthodontists and shopkeepers. I sometimes feel very old and not so gorgeous as “mum me” (“mum, why do you have a hair growing out of your cheek?” is a question that was asked of me last week – thank god I have children with sharp eyes. Hello tweezers.). So I am going for a casual but still “done” make up look – bronzer, gloss, mascara – nothing too fancy, but still making me feel good.
And finally, I go to band rehearsals, where I am the only woman amongst 4 men. And I totally try out my makeup on them, because they only notice when it’s very good, or very bad. I go for a new make up look every week. Bare face with a matte red lip (big tick from all the lads), or very fresh, highlighted skin with nude lips and perfect eyebrows (they didn’t notice, but I felt a million dollars). Last week I did just mascara and gloss because I’d been exercising and my skin had that healthy glow.
In the end though, I’m the one who most notices what I wear or put on my face, it’s just that it feels like I have a different audience all the time. I like it, it’s like the dance shows we used to put on when we were 12 and make mum and dad pay to come to!

Rose, I second too-faced shadow insurance – changed my life! I use foundation and a light dusting of powder on my lids, then apply, wait a couple of minutes then do my eyeshadow and it honestly stays put all day until I remove it at night. Amazing!

I am currently doing my make up for a bitchy girl at work who doesn’t wear any and has horrible clothes.. it gives me a bit of confidence in meetings when she is trying to belittle me, I can think “well at least my make up is funky and hair is poofy”

I hardly wear makeup, even after I begged for makeup for Christmas. It is special to me, and I wear it on very special occasions. I wear it for myself, or my partner when I want to dazzle him.
I do not like it when people say “Oh, you don’t have to go to so much trouble, we aren’t going anywhere that fancy” Well too bad, I want to do it for me, so let me.

I have
horrid bags under my eyes so I wear concealer everyday for me. But make-up is just generally to look nice, I don’t care as I don’t think I do anything spesh to my make up to gain attention I just feel prettier
