by ZOE FOSTER
A lot of women say to me, ‘Zoe, how is that you can play the harp while painting your toes?’, which is a secret I shall never reveal. Something else they often ask is, ‘How can I update my hair, which is currently as inspiring as a bruised banana, and desperately needs a change?’
To which I respond:
1. Create one ‘block’ statement.
It might be snipping in a choppy, Alexa Chung-style fringe. It might be going all one length, cutting out all those layers you’ve had since you were 25. It might be wearing your hair in a low plait or high bun for a change. It might be using sparkly, bejewelled, embellished clips and hair accessories, which are very in. It might be going all-over brunette. (Ladies who hate when their brown hair turns red after a few weeks must avoid the words “warm” and “chocolate” when explaining what they want to their colourist.
Instead ask for a ‘cool, flat brunette shade, which will definitely not fade to red/gold’.) Just choose one big thing you’d like to change, and do it. There’s no need to do a colour, a style and a cut change all at once. Just one. But make sure it excites you.
2. Update your balayage or dip dye
Dramatic dip-dye is a bit… Done. However, if you still like the look/idea of dark roots that suddenly turn quite blonde indeed a few inches down, and are not yet ready to kiss goodbye the look, may I recommend you 1) chop off some length, to at least the collarbones. This instantly updates tired balayage, and will hugely improve the condition and look of your hair. And then 2) Freshen things up even more by having the severe line between the dark and blonde blended in, and a toner applied all over so you avoid the warm/golden ends and cool roots look, which can happen when you don’t treat and tone and look after your balayage. (Eg: you get it done, then just let the dark roots grow and grow and never think about/look after the blonde bits again.)

3. Cut your hair very, very short.
If Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Michelle Williams and Danni Minogue are all bold enough to snip off their long, heavily-photographed tresses, perhaps you are, too? Particularly if you have a heart-shaped (Minogue) or oval-shaped (Hathaway) face, both of which look fantastic with short, sleek crops. If you have a rounder face, then go for a longer, sweeping fringe, and if you’re more square, (like Cyrus) opt for a little more length, both in the fringe and the cut, so there is some softness around the face and jawline. But while I advocate a chic, short crop, I also recommend making it a journey, rather than doing it in one go. Take 2-3 cuts to get there, because 1) it’s fun and you might fall in love with a jawline-length bob for six months, 2) because going very long to very short can sometimes be a bit traumatic and 3) because you might have been saturated with white wine and freshly broken-hearted when you made the decision to chop it all off.

After 6 months overseas, a keratin treatment I was unimpressed by, 3 months of 30+ weather every day, and an offer to be a hair model in London, I let a stylist thin out 6 years of dedicated growing of my long, thick, curly hair, went bright red, then it faded and all I wanted was for the length to be gone. So it’s gone, and I love it! Two haircuts in three weeks, now I’m a bit orange but I can fix that with a home dye (running out of money!)
No more heavy, blunt fringe (which I LOVED), no more blanket of hair on my back – it’s amazing!
I’ve chopped my hair off so many times but this time was nowhere near as traumatic as it has been in the past.
Thoroughly enjoying having chin-length curls… and no more GHD-abuse!

How timely! I have made an appointment to get my blonde hair dyed back to brown. I had a chocolate brown in mind, but may have to rethink it as I don’t want it to fade. Must remember to think ‘flat/cool’ brown.
I’ve been blonde for about 4 years, so I’m quite looking forward to the change!

I would love to get a fringe, but I have very fine hair, not a lot of it and THE BIGGEST cowlick, like, EVER, in my hair just over my right eye! And I can’t even begin to describe what my hair does when it rains…..
Is there a secret to taming the dreaded cowlick and getting a fringe to stay looking like a fringe???

Look up Zoe’s fringe theory. She explains in detail how to deal with cowlicks. I have a massive cowlick, and it is tamed.

Hi Zoe,
I fall into the category of women who wear no make up as a general rule and am very uninterested in beauty. Please don’t stop reading.
Most of my friends are in this category too – we’re not hippy, daggy, all natural lazy women, we just somehow have managed to get away with no real beauty regime. But I’ve noticed that we are all starting to think, maybe a little something wouldn’t kill us. Foundation, mascara, lip gloss? I honestly have no idea where to start. I have two shades of eye shadow (!) that I’ve had for ten years and one lipstck.
So may I send out an SOS and ask for a post about where to start with make up? Something to hide evidence of long nights tending to sick children? A few easy things to do to give me a pick me up?
Thanks!
Maria

I would go for some mascara. Opens up your eyes. If you’re looking washed out, maybe a little bit of blush.
Do one thing at a time. if you go from zero to foundation-blush-mascara-eyeliner-bronzer-lipstick-lipgloss it’ll be too much!

I wear make up very occasionally – don’t really know how to put it on. I went and got my make up done one day and the girl said the basics were mascara, eyebrow pencil and lip gloss. They showed me how to do the eyebrow pencil. Looks good when I’ve tried it.

Thanks for the tips – I think I just have to go out and do it!

Eyeshadow, eyeliner and most importantly – mascara!
Mascara is a miracle beauty product. It makes your eyes pop and makes you look wonderful in general. Read: http://hellogiggles.com/an-open-letter-to-mascara haha!
You could probably get away without the eyeliner, I just wear those 3 products religiously. Also try some lip gloss, maybe just lighter, more subtle colours that give you a little bit of shine. But definitely play up the eyes.

A great place to start would be with a beauty counter. Mecca, Clinique, MAC… You book in for a lesson $100ish redeemable on product. they go through your aims & how to achieve the look, teach you how to use makeup, & then you get the cost of your lesson in cosmetic goodies to take home with confidence.

This post is quite timely, as this morning I paid the hairdresser an impromptu visit! I’ve always had long hair and used to be extremely precious about trimming even an inch off, but today I was feeling spontaneous and chopped it to just above shoulder-length. Feels fantastic – no more horrendous split ends and tangles!
loading...
I was desperate for a change from my old style shoulder length hair so went drastic and took in this recent pic of Anne Hathaway to my hairdresser and am now sporting a gorgeous pixie cut. I love it! And I get so many comments from friends and co-workers! I say do it!
Thanks for another great post Zoe!

Ive just gotten married so I am busting for a change too.. I have loooong had my change picked out, so I am off to get it done next week.
So! I have a proposition! Everyone who makes their ‘spring change’ in the next two weeks or so should upload their ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos so we don’t always have to look at celebrities? Even if it is a subtle change? What do you think, team? Zoe? MM Team??

So I have long hair (down to my bra strap) and I really want to cut it into a shortish choppy bob – but I have a fat round face. Is there anything I could ask for that would suit this face shape? I’ve asked hairdressers before but I’ve never really been happy with the result. I want to draw attention awaaay from my double chin, not accentuate it!! And, to fringe or not to fringe – decisions, decisions…
loading...
ME TOOO!! I am so bored of my hair which sounds about the same length as yours, and have been thinking of a choppy bob, but I am scared it will be awful as I have thick curly hair. Decisions, decisions!
loading...
LozFromOz, if cut right it will look amazing with your hair texture. Just make sure your ready fit the chop and have a hairdresser you like and feel understands what your after !

I’m a hairdresser and have recently just cut all my hair off, I also have a round face and it had been soooo long since I’d had short hair even as a hairdresser I still had a fear it was going to make me look more chunky, Zoe was actually my inspiration and I’m soooooo glad I did it !
Because you have around face you need to make sure you keep the length slightly longer around your face. It doesn’t have to be a huge difference the slightest bit of length at the front will work a charm. This will slim your face down front on and give you a head a really nice shape as it will narrow it down if that makes sense….

Great timing Zoe, I have a hairdresser appt tomorrow. I have a blunt fringe, long hair all one length and all one colour and I am BORED of it! So tomorrow I’m off to chop at least 2 inches off and get some layers cut in for more shape. Glad I’m not the only one busting for a change.

Damn Zoe, how do you do it, I have a hairdressers appointment on the weekend and was thinking about what to do!! Balayage I have now and some times it just looks terrible. I like the natural looking almost highlights rather than the full on two different colours.
Oh and welcome back!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone could help me out? A while ago Zoe made a post about something to do with putting mousse in your wet hair and letting it dry over night?? That’s all I can remember about it, I have finally gotten around to buying mousse and now I’ve forgotten what I was meant to with it. I know, I’m a massive idiot hahah. But if anyone knows what it’s called or the link? It would be greatly appreciated

I’m wanting to dye my hair a light/medium brown but don’t know which brand or colour to get that won’t make it go redish brown.

Hey Zoë! I am thinking about dying my naturally really dark hair blonde, quite dramatic, I want it to still look natural and have a kind of balyagey effect but be quite blonde still. Is there any way that you know of for taking dark hair light that looks natural, isn’t damaging and doesn’t look horrifically yellow orange or morange? (i don’t really know what morange is but I know I don’t want my hair to be it) Also what is the VERY best toner that you have ever used? lovelovelove Ta (the photo is of my ‘trialling blonde with my friend Lynsday’s hair, teehee)

Oooh yes! I’d like to hear your recommendation for a good toner too!

I’ve already started a Pinterest board on hairstyles, I’m planning to cut my long hair short. http://pinterest.com/bookbek/new-hairstyle-ideas/
So far this style is winning:

Yes! R. Taylor’s fancy short bob is a triumph.

I loooove Rachel Taylor and was just watching her on tv thinking how awesome her hair is. And she has the best eyebrows!

Great advice Zoe… I made the drastic change last year to go from blonde to dark brown and absolutely love it. Now my hair is frustrating me as it is soooooooo long, and on Friday I am chopping it off (think Lara bingle/Nat Bass kind of length) I can’t wait, time for a change =)

DO IT Rhiannon!!! Let us know how you go! XxDani

I had a free balayage done to my hair when I was pregnant. I was too scared to blonde it the whole time I was pregnant (I know some people are comfortable doing it, I wasn’t) so my dark brown hair came past my ears and the ends remained blonde. Looked shocking!!

Oh Zoe, how I missed you. I even sent an email to MM on Tuesday last week asking where you were. They didn’t reply. I must have missed the holiday notice.
This post is so timely. I wear my hair up constantly and keep thinking to cut it off but as I’m older, I think short hair immediately says ‘old’ unless you are very young.

Mi scusi, my friends! I was offline for a week of holiday before coming back to Sydney, gorgeous son of a peach that she is.

I am changing my hair for the first time in 25 yrs ive had the same colour all my life and I am going with either red or chestnut highlights to add to my already dark hair
loading...
I can not even begin to explain how bad I think that dying roots look looks on blondes. It is awful. Sorry but I just think jumping on trends for the sake of it means some women (blondes in this case) look absolutely terrible.
loading...
Are you talking about Balayage?
If done well it can look nice but it’s a bit outdated now I think…
There is a fine line between looking like you have severe regrowth and looking like you have sun-kissed ends.
loading...
Totally agree, I simply don’t get balayage. As it generally comes with a messy shaggy do it just looks like trailer trash no matter how rich a celebrity head it adorns. Just got out of bed, haven’t washed my hair and can’t afford to have my roots done, gross!

I have really long hair and have recently had the really strong urge to cut it short. I had it really short about 5 years ago and have pretty much been growing it ever since. Am I the only one who has no idea how to recognise my own face shape though?
loading...
Nope your not alone..,,
loading...
Apparently the best way to do it is – stand in front of a mirror with your hair tied back, and using a lipstick (or something else you can draw on a mirror and remove easily!), trace the outline of your face. You will generally be able to see what shape yours resembles – though people can be borderline of a couple of different ones, of course!
loading...
No you’re not the only one.
I think my face looks round, like a beach ball with a double chin, but others say it’s oval. I don’t believe them, so now I just don’t know.
loading...
Zoe! Oh how I have missed you.
I had a crisis of appearance whilst you were away…I was feeling bored with my appearance and was desperate for a change. I have gone from brown to blonde for the first time ever and I love it!
I feel this piece validates my decision, so thank you!

The other day I too opted for a drastic cut.
Now I am an extremely impulsive person (read complete and utter nut-bag) and decided to cut my hair into a smart sharp bob (think Posh spice).
So obviously I wanted it RIGHT NOW upon my arrival home so proceeded to wield the kitchen scissors and attend to my locks.
How hard could it be? Cut from left of face and then right of face in a straight line?
The result was a horrendous helmet.
I look like a complete dingus and at work people couldn’t hide their horror!
It’s a tragedy and I wish you wrote this 3 days earlier.

One of my friends got hers cut and had the posh spice look in her mind. She was all happy feeling the love, sooo happy with her cut until she walked into her classroom (she is a teacher), the whole class said she looks like Julia Gillard. She had seen it as posh spice, but red/dark. V Funny!

Just chopped half my hair off the other day and went from bright red to blonde AND LOVING IT. I love coming in to spring and just totally reinventing my hair. Best feeling!

Are there ‘bricks & mortar’ stores here in Australia which stock a good range of ‘hair stuff’ – brushes etc?

Hairhouse warehouse and price attack would be your best shot

Zoe, I love the phrase ‘saturated with white wine’! Can I borrow it?
loading...
how do you think she would even know….?

I’m going on the assumption that she’s enthralled with me and is stalking me over the internet. No, seriously, I’m just being polite and asking permission to use someone else’s phrasing.

Thanks Zoe! I am so sick of my hair turning a little reddish after getting it coloured…now I know what to ask for when I’m next at the hair dressers

Saying the word “ash” over and over again to the stylist does wonders!
loading...
Be careful about saying ‘ash’ or ‘cool’ too many times though, you might end up with a really flat grey-brown, like mouse-brown, which is not the best!
loading...
‘Cool’. Just keep repeating ‘cool’, I’ve finally learnt that! Ha ha

Haha I just imagined myself in the chair screaming “ash! ash!” Thanks for the tips, knowing the buzz words will help loads

Does anyone know anywhere to get really cute, funky, sexy hair accessories? I’m usually good at finding random stuff, but for hair accessories I’m sucking big time.

I love alannah hill hair accessories, which are pretty easy to get on eBay if a store’s not handy.

Google Kezani , bridal hairpieces but can be worn out as many colours and styles

Colette or Diva if ur not wanting to spend to much

Kids stores are the BEST. They are way better value for money too. I love gumboots, however I find seed a bit overpriced.
