I used toner when I was 15 and copying my best friend, Emma. Had no idea why. (Was a marshmallow or nettle or something-a-rather one, came in a small trio of skin care in mint-aqua plastic bottles… I want to say the brand was Blackmores, but that can’t be right, can it?)

I just did what she did. The fact that she had some spots and actually needed skin care, whereas I escaped teenage acne and had a face that was hungry for nothing more than Lip Smackers, was irrelevant. (Don’t worry – I got mine, giving myself a DIY undercut in Year 9 because it was trendy, but only getting as far as enormous, deep sideburns, which I shaved off with Dad’s razor. I was the joke of school for the rest of the year and they have never been the same since.)

Toners cop a bad wrap because they seem like a superfluous pain in the arse, what with all that cleansing and moisturising already going on… never mind the serums and peels and masks and primers and so on. But they are not a pain in the arse. They are useful and good for us – they can transform the skin of those with very dry or very oily skin – and it’s high time we realised this. (Again.)

Having personally just re-discovered their splendour, (I’m using a Boots brightening one I read about in Elle) after a few years off, and seeing a glowier complexion and better skin texture already, allow me to gently remind you of their benefits:

- They remove all the makeup and primer and sunscreen your cleanser missed. (Yes, even your fancy expensive, Norwegian whalesong and gold dust extract cleanser can miss stuff)

- They rebalance oily skins and reduce oil production

- The rebalance PH levels

- They clear out filthy, clogged pores (which lead to breakouts) and minimise their appearance

- They can serve a “serum-like” purpose, that is to say, they can assist with your pigmentation battle, or your wrinkles, or your minimise/prevent acne

- They hydrate the skin in a longlasting and sincere fashion

- They can calm and soothe skin suffering from redness

- They beautifully prepare the skin for your serum or/and moisturisier

- They help your makeup to sit better on the skin

And on top of new formulas and benefits, some modern toners come in spritzes that take less time to use than it takes to swoon over Joel Madden. This makes them excellent for swift birds or lazy birds, or birds who like to give their already face-creamed skin a boost of moisture right before foundation.

Allow a dame to help you navigate the toner maze?

For oily skin and those prone to breakouts: Go for an astringent, which are the more “traditional” toners, and can contain a whopping 60% alcohol, making them definitely unsuitable for dry-skinned dames. (Witch hazel and salicylic acid are also used and shouldn’t irritate.) Astringents will also clean out and tighten pores to stop breakouts and excess oil production. Try Mario Badescu Special Cucumber Lotion, Garnier Pure Pore Purifying Astringent or Biore Complexion Clearing Triple Action Toner.

For combination skin: You need something to balance it all out: keep the oil in check, add moisture to dry patches, and refresh and gently clean your skin. Try Origins United State Balancing Tonic (a cult favourite), it’s the perfect antidote to naughty, misbehavey, and complicated skin.

For ladies with pigmentation who wish they did not have pigmentation: Look for words like “whitening” and “brightening” and be sure to use sunscreen during the day. Try A’kin Hydro Essential Lavender Cellular Brightening Mist or Kiehl’s Clarifying Whitening Toner.

For ladies who want their “toner” to act as a cunning anti-aging tool and/or exfoliant as well: Go for one with AHAs, like Alpha-H’s Liquid Gold.

For those with dry skin: Choose one with no alcohol and no acids. Try Aesop’s bestselling Parsley Seed Antioxidant Facial Toner or Natio Ageless Rehydrating Toner.

For normal skins who want the hydrating and clarifying benefits: You don’t need the astringent stuff or the full on actives. Choose something simple but powerful, like SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence, or Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist, (which is great to use just before and after makeup.)

For sensitive skins: Go for one that is completely alcohol free, like Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner, or something with very pure and simple ingredients, like Dr Hauschka Facial Toner or Sodashi Rejuvenating Face Mist.

  1. Help!

Zoe I need your help! I am 25 and have always had quite congested skin- not really acne but about 2-4 pimples at one time. My skin has never been pimple/black head free. This year I started getting facials. But they are so expensive I have only been able to go every 6 weeks. Each time my skin majorly breaks out afterwards, then a week later it settles down a little. The last time I went (3 weeks ago) they suggested some new problems. I spent $400 on their organic skin care for acne skin. Now my skin is TERRIBLE!!! Almost overnight I have 17 massive, red, sore pimples on the right side of my face and 8 on the left side (yes I counted, desperate times..). Also my skin has always been quite dry despite my previous trouble with pimples, however after using these products it looks like I have tipped a bottle of oil on my face. Every time I wake up and then about halfway through the day the oil is at its’ worst. I don’t know whether to keep using these products. Before I was just using cheap products from the grocery store. And I am not to keen on going back to the place I go for facials. HELP!

Just from my experience and also from what other people have written I can recommend the clarisonic. I get pimples like you 1 or 2 at a time and they could get really angry, but I’ve been using this for about 3 months now and my pores are smaller and breakouts are hide able for want of a better word. I also found using moogoo products and straight manuka honey for 10mins to what ever time you have spare, after exfoliating and my skin is much more settled.
Some beauticians are just used car sales men:-((
      Hope this helps:-)

    • Been there with pimples

      Dear help.

A couple of suggestions from someone who has been there, sounds like maybe the products are too heavy or are causing sensitivity.

      Skin:
I find that the Alpha-H Microcleanse works wonders for my breakouts. You can even leave it on as a mask for 5-10 mins after cleansing. It contains glycolic acid and has really improved my skin.

If you have oily skin, instead of facials try a salicylic acid peel. This will go deep into your pores, eliminate blackheads, pimples and reduce pore size. Please only get this done at a salon as it is quite strong and you should never have more than a 30% applied.

Also Tea tree antiseptic cream applied to the whole face before bed has helped me.

      Dietary:
A reduction in diary products, sugar and gluten can reduce inflammation in the body and the skin.Sugar can stimulate the growth of bacteria and may make it take longer for your skin to heal.

Zince, Vit C, Vit A and Vit D tablets can also help you heal.

Please speak to a professional before taking these if you have any health issues or are on any meds.

      Goodluck

As a beauty therapist, one of the most common skin conditions I see is impaired barrier function due to unhealthy pH levels. One of the easiest ways to repair this damage is to start using a toner. It’s amazing how it can change a skin so dramatically! Restored pH lessens inflammation, increases hydration, and improves treatment product absorption.

Please don’t self-diagnose though! Yes, there are heaps of treatment toners out there. But you don’t want to be doubling up on active ingredients and/or jeopardising the absorption of your serums and moisturisers. You need to find a toner that is purpose-manufactured to complement your cleanser and other treatment products. It honestly is best to see a professional skincare therapist in this regard. I know, I know. But I used to think I knew it all about skin too, and looking back now I realise I didn’t have a clue. :)

Food for thought — if you use a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid (like, I’m talking over 40%) it can negate the need for a toner for some people. Hyaluronic acid is by its very nature pH-balancing.

An added bonus — if you find that foundations oxidise on your skin (turn darker/more orange after an hour or so), try adding a toner into your routine. Oxidation is often due to an out-of-whack pH.

    Yay for toners!

I remember those minty green bottles, too!

When I wore makeup to work (in a CBD office), I used a gentle creamy cleanser and toner at night. Now I don’t, I only wear it when going out, so I just use Dove cleansers in the shower. I have very sensitive & allergic skin, but it loves this.

Oh Zoe, i just love and look forward to your posts, i love your writing – find it so inspiring, and you have rekindled my love of beauty products and skincare in a major way (altho hubby probably wont thank you for that when he realises how much ive actually spent ;) after several years of neglect (handsoap as a facewash cos uve been up all night with screaming baby and just could not be f**kd to go the cupboard and get more facewash out?? sure whynot!)
but now… im rocking the whole cleanser/toner/serum/moisturiser routine, and for the first ever i bought a lipstick, red no less, revlon lip butter in cherry tart and i adore it!! my hubby did a double take (in a good way) when he walked in the door and i was wearing it!! (im usually a pale gloss/plain lip balm fanatic on account of a slightly thinner top lip).

I looooove toners, always have, even through the phase where beauty people (much like yourself) started saying they were an unnecessary step. Rubbish, I say to them.

I have 2 bottles of good Toners going to waste in my bathroom cupboard.
I just don’t have the time or patience for another product.
    I cleanse, AHA/BHA, serum, moisturiser/sunscreen.

My cleanser clarisonic combo gets everything off plus I rarely wear makeup these days.
Also, I think alcohol Toners are pure evil. Almost as bad as when i used metho on my poor acne covered teenage skin.

I remember getting roped into buying LOADS of Laura Mercier products in Harrods about 6 years ago. I just got swept up in the hype, but the most amazing of all the purchases was this bottle of “hydrating water”, or something, to go on after cleansing and before moisturising instead of a toner. They went on about how it’s from the deep sea of some ancient ocean, or something….. so I rolled my eyes, but bought it anyway (oh to have those extravagant youthful days again).

BUT, it’s still going, and it’s the most amazing thing! It’s like thick rich water, as weird as that sounds, that you apply with a cotton pad. It makes my skin so plump and fresh and beautiful looking, and I only use basic moisturizer, nothing flash. It’s really just water in a bottle, but it’s amazing! I have no idea how or why. And I’ve only just rediscovered it.

So i’ll be sticking with that now. I hope they still make it!

I always use toner and have for years. Tried to go without for a couple of months earlier this year, as I thought maybe it was superfluous and I was being taken for a ride! But I really noticed the difference and went straight back to using it.

I use only Lancome skincare products and I’m using the Tonique Radiance toner at the moment. I have quite oily skin, and my all time favourite toner is the Lancome Pure Focus toner that actually contains powder as well to help suck up all that oil, but I’ve had trouble getting it recently. Think the Pure Focus line may be being phased out.

I’m going to issue a public service warning re: salicylic acid as an ingredient – particularly in something like a toner, which would be used an a dailyish basis….

I was using a very good brand of cream for a particularly stubborn breakout (salicylic acid is a wonder ingredient in a majority of ‘breakout products’) without any issues, until I suddenly developed an allergy basically overnight….I think I ‘over sensitised’ my skin to it by regular use… and the next time I used it, my face puffed up, bright red, hot, rash and extreeemely sensitive for a couple of days, and then broke out into the most horrible cystic acne for months afterwards.

It took me some time to figure out what the ingredient was that was the problem…just kept trying more and more breakout prodz to try and clear up the acne but just made it worse, because just about everything for acne has salicylic acid in it these days….it wasn’t until I switched to cetaphil cleanser/moisturiser that it finally calmed down and started to heal. that was 5 yrs ago, and I now have acne scars, and the occasional breakout again if I try a product, and haven’t noticed the salicylic as an ingredient cos the writing is soooo teeny tiny grrrr.

heed my warning peeps – beware the salicylic!! BE…WAAAARRRE!!

GREAT POINT. I should have said something about this.

Do beware of salicylic acid and AHAs, and try not to use daily. (I realise this might be tricky for those with acne or very oily skin.) I only use my toner (which has some sal acid in it) 3-4 times a week, at night. It’s enough to make a difference, and do some good work, but not so much that in 30 years I will have paper-tissue skin, which is what happens when we all over exfoliate our skin. (I mention this stuff in Amazing Face.)

    Quick question- exfoliator?
I’m 22 and I have alright skin… end up with pimples around my mouth/chin but never more than one or two at a time. I’ve got big pores on my nose but no black heads as such…
How often should I be exfoliating? Amazing face mentions this for the older age groups but not for 20′s! Should I use a creamy one or a more gritty gel type one?

My best friend is getting married in Oct (woop maid of honour) and I want to get my skin in tip top shape- been using rosehip oil and am apparently going to start using toner again after stopping at about 16 lol. Any suggestions for a cheaper version of the Origin’s one for combo skin? I’m a poor uni student who’d rather spend on wine or makeup :P

I find it really helps to prep the skin and a bit extra moisture after cleansing and before applying my SPF moisturiser. I’m at that awesome age where I get the wrinkles and acne.

I had the absolute perfect solution, but I can’t use it at the moment because I’m “trying” and it has a high essential oil content (which you’re not meant to use during pregnancy) I’m a bit distraught without it.

It hasn’t hit the market yet (I was lucky enough to have insider access), but it balances sebum and sloughs off dead skin cells so it works on both skin issues. It also triples as cleanser, toner, and moisturiser so I never needed a separate toner.

Now I’m just using an alcohol and olive oil mix which is OK, but nothing like my beloved serum.

I’ve studied aromatherapy and, without knowing your personal situation or what’s in the serum you’re talking about, anything that’s mild enough to put on your skin is unlikely to have any effect on you internally, let alone on a baby. Worry and stress is more likely to affect it.

http://www.roberttisserand.com/ This man does a lot of scientific research into essential oils and has written an academic book on essential oil safety; perhaps search the various ingredients + pregnancy and see what he has to say about it.

Honestly, everything seems terrifying re harming a potential fetus, and the info I’ve read so far on essential oils says they’re not safe for pregnancy.

It’s so hard to know what to do in these circs. The oilve oil/alcohol combo is OK, but I do miss the other serum.

At twenty all I do every morning and every night is cleanse, tone, moisturise. I have pretty good skin. Not really sure why I tone, but it makes my skin feel fresh and good. So I do it. If I put some makeup on over the top, I feel like my skin has been prepared.

My mum started me off when I was about thirteen and have just done it ever since. I only use Lush products because they are vegan/organic … but for toner I actually make my own- dilute of apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil, It’s brilliant.

YES. Genes have a lot to do with skin. You are one lucky butternut.
(Although you are not immune to UV damage, so do wear sunscreen.)

This is my mum and me. Water and sorbolene (and the sorbolene only occasionally)

I know everyone says that’s bad, but Mum has pretty decent skin for a lady in her 50′s. She also almost never wears makeup, so I’m sure that’s made a difference too.

I love Dove foaming cleanser – leave it in the shower and use a little squirt when you rinse your face. Extra time and effort: almost nil.

I’m very similar. My mum rarely wore make up and I rarely wear it know except for a bit of concealor. I find the more make u use the more u need to use. I do adore make up tho and have way too much for someone who doesn’t wear it much. My skin care is baby wipes and aldi moisturizer. I find the less I mess with my skin the better. Same with my Celtic curly hair too! When I got Botox for migraine the woman was shocked I was 27, she guessed 22 max. :)

Based on Zoe’s recommendation in Amazing face, I got myself some A’kin Creamy something something Cleanser and Toner In 1. Amazing stuff – I take my makeup off with it at the end of the day and use it in the shower in the mornings (where I tend to give my face a gool massage with it because it feels so ace).
I recall reading in Amazing face that if you’re over 30, find a creamy cleanser (can’t remmeber what it said about toner) not a foaming one. This product ticks that box too).
After a few days of using it my skin looked and felt softer, more hydrated and just plain older better.

Ive been using toner since I was 12/13. Mum decided it was time I got into a good skincare routine and bought me a gorgeous smelling cleanser and toner. I’ve never seen the brand again, but it smelled great and the toner was a spray on one, which for a beginner was brilliant. I didn’t start moisturising until my 20′s though. I had the type of skin Zoe had in her teens (my beauty karma was at age 10, when I trimmed my own fringe…it ended up a whole 1cm long. Just days before my first communion!!). I’ve now, at 30, progressed to a gentle cleanser, Cetafil (spell?), which is great for my temperamental, and horribly oily skin. I tried a gorgeous smelling for oily/acne prone skin, and found its salicylic acid magic ingredient was a bit too strong for me, and spent the next week looking like a snake shedding its skin! Yuck and ouch. So back to my lovely Cetafil. Plus a gentle scrub I use every other day to avoid ticking off my skin! But from about age 15, I’ve used witch hazel! Perfect for oily but sensitive skin! I even use it to give my legs a swipe with it after shaving. It’s cheap and excellent! No perfumes that can be irritating too. Incidentally, I use a tinted moisturiser too. Rarely use foundation any more. And suddenly, everyone is commenting on how good I look! Which is a good thing as I have a chronic illness that can leave me looking, well crap!

Thanks for this piece Zoe! Just confirms I’m on the right track, and will doubtless help a lot ladies who have been unsure where to start with toners!

After years of using cleansers that were too drying or too oily (but never just right) Cetafil was a real find for me as well – and as a bonus, so cheap!

I’ve been using Clinique’s “Clarifying Lotion 2″ (the lilac one) for years now and I think it’s really helped my skin……..this is after I’ve washed off my make-up with Clinique’s “3 little soaps – mild”……..I don’t always use Clinique’s moisturiser though, it depends on how dry or “needy” my skin looks each day. I’m sure that I’ve used moisturiser every day of my life since the age of 10yrs as I’ve been interested in make-up since at least that time; and yes – toner is a great addition to your routine.

Lol, Steph! Clinique toner sucked the living daylights out of my skin. Thankfully they refunded my money when they saw the state of my face & recommended I see a Dr!

What’s the best toner to use if you get a lot of blackheads? I love my Clinique toner but it doesn’t do a lot for those, though it does make my skin feel awesome.

I bought the Dr. Brandt blackhead vacuum and it’s really effective! I’d definitely recommend it. I use it about once a week and I hardly have any blackheads anymore. It’s expensive here (I got mine in the US) but worth it in my opinion!

I’ve used toner my whole life. I’m a daughter of a beautician and mum always said “your skin routine is never complete without a toner”. It is always 1. Cleanse 2. Tone 3. Moisturise .. SKII facial treatment clear lotion. It’s my secret weapon

I notice a big difference in my skin if I don’t use toner and after reading this I now know why (Thanks Zoe!)- I have oily skin.

I always wondered if there is a difference between the mist type toners and ones that you apply directly to the skin?

(Apart from the obvious not being sure if I actually am getting every part of my face when spray with a mist and then I tend to go overboard- but this is prob just me!)
