Do I apply my zit zapper product before or after my face cream? – Holly.
Hol, even if I had somehow taken ownership of a wishing well, several magic lamps and a small, powerful gypsy, I could not have wished for a better question.
It seems insignificant, but is actually quite important because as with sunscreen, the order of application means the difference between your prodz being able to do their job properly and effectively, and them wandering around aimlessly, out of work, kicking tyres and hustling for cigarette money.
The short answer: Apply them before.
The long answer: There are several types of blemish zappers one can use on one’s spots, which I might just go over quickly, because it’s so fun.
You might choose…
- A benzoyl peroxide product, which will work to clear out the bacteria and dry up the spot. Try: Danné Montague-King’s 5% Benzoyl Peroxide Lotion or Dermalogica’s special clearing booster. Note: Benzoyl peroxide can be drying and irritate-y for sensitive skinned dames. Go easy. Another note: Benzoyl peroxide is particularly good for blind pimples, although you shouldn’t really be giving your pimples beer in the first place, in my opinion.
- A drawing paste, which uses gentle ingredients like clay, sulfur and zinc oxide to draw out the whitehead, purify the skin and reduce redness. They are best to use at night so that in the morning the whitehead will (“should”) show on the surface and you can hygienically extract it with a tissue, not your paws. I love Payot’s Pate Grise for this. So much. And it lasts for years.
- A salicylic acid-based anti-spot gel, which you apply directly to spots with an applicator or cotton tip (never fingers!) and which calms the spot down and helps with redness and inflammation. Try: Clinique Acne Solutions Spot Healing Gel Salicylic Acid Acne Medication or Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Pimple Cream.
Or one that does everything in one, like my beloved Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion (a small bottle of magic with a calamine and salicylic acid lotion to soothe and calm the skin down while purifying it, and a pink “clay” made of zinc oxide and sulfur at the bottom to draw the whiteheads out.) One thing to note with this guy is that you do NOT shake him – just dip a cotton tip through to the bottom of bottle so you get some pink clay on the tip, then dab on to spots so you’re getting both the liquid and clay on there at once.
Whichever of these you are using, you should be using it on clean, freshly washed skin so the ingredients can penetrate properly and do their thing.
Allow the spot(s) to dry for a few minutes and then apply your face cream.
And do apply face cream, peaches! Just because you have some spots, does not mean your skin suddenly doesn’t need moisture. In fact, as most spot-treatment lotions dry your skin out, in order to kill the blemish, you must keep them all VERY TARGETED on the actual spot, (otherwise you’ll end up with a really cute, big flaky, dry patch, like I always do) and keep up the moisturiser as per usual. If you happen to have one that is non-scented and non-irritating, even better.
Following this is makeup. Your usual foundation is fine, (mineral is optimal, if possible, as it’s not only not going to piss your spots off, it will calm and help heal them) but I keep a dedicated blemish concealer for specific spot coverage. The pen-style ones are good, as you’re not dipping back in and spreading bacteria around. (There are pleeeenty of these out there: The Body Shop does one with tea tree oil, Glo minerals does a great one and Almay does too.) Set with powder so that shining great whitehead don’t pop through.
Finally, I would like to state for the jury here that it’s best to REALLY treat spots at night; the less cream and makeup on top of these prodz, the better. Especially if you’re using the pastes, which look gross and are not really meant to for the eyes of your adoring fans (“the public.”) The salicylic spot treatments are good for day under makeup, though. (And even on top of makeup, if things are getting a bit angry mid-way through the day and need calming.)
The wrong answer: Persimmons.

I used to buy those super expensive products and they never worked. Now I make my own cleanser. I mix a tiny bit of benzoyl peroxide cream with cetaphil and teatree oil. very cheap and works for me.

I know this is going to sound really weird, but put toothpaste on a blind pimple overnight and in the morning it will have a head and you can then extract it. It works for me every single time, in fact I woke up with a blind pimple this morning, had to wait until dinner time to be away from staring eyes (!) put the paste on and voila 2 hours later pimple popped (hygienically), skin cleaned, and Clearasil on top to keep the pore clean.
Use the white paste kind, the gel toothpaste doesn’t seem to be as effective

Nearly 40 and have suffered mild-moderate acne with blackheads and blocked pores since I was 13. Recently discovered Daniel Kern’s regime. I went out last night for the first time since I can remember without makeup. The regime involves slathering your face in benzoyl peroxide morning and night and no picking (well I did that one a bit). At first you look like someone from V your skin dries out so much. The regime is not a cure, but a regime. You have to keep it up to keep the accers at bay. Just wanted to let people know that clearer skin feels good and is possible.

Zoe have you heard anything about Ultraceuticals new acne products? I’ve been using their skincare products for a few years and more recently I’ve started using their acne products after switching from a Clearasil cream as it just wasn’t working. I use their Ultra Clear Treatment Lotion after washing my face with their Ultra Foaming Cleanser and I’m super stoked with the results. Just before I switched to Ultraceuticals I gave ProActive a try and I’m so glad it worked poorly on me because otherwise I wouldn’t have discovered how much better the Ultraceuticals products are!

I am 35 and have two children. I have had pimples since I was a teenager, sometimes mild sometimes what I would depressingly call acne.
During pregnancy and after babies my ‘hormonal’ zits got worse and worse – a batch in the middle of the month when I ovulate and then another fresh batch at the time of my period so I would always have them at varying healing stages..
I have tried lot’s of different cosmetics and drying products, I went on the juliette/diane pills (supposed to be great for skin), I also did a course of roacutaine in my mid 20′s.
8 months ago I went to my gp who wanted me to try a new pill (under 2 years on the market) called YAZ, I decided to give it a go even though the past pills had not made any difference.. After about 3 months my skin improved, at 6 months I got 1 or 2 period pimples and now at 8 months I have not had a single zit since Christmas! I am so happy and for the first time I am happy without makeup!
I know all skin/hormones ect are different but this was a complete breakthrough for me after 20 years of red spots…
loading...
I’ve had exactly the same experience on Yaz, it’s great. Only downsides are breakthrough bleeding and the cost (approx $80 for three months, I think?)
loading...
Yes it is the most expensive pill I have been on, however I weigh it up with all of the wash, cream, concealer, make up, facials etc and it’s worth it for me.
I have only had the breakthrough bleeding once and it was a surprise and annoying – but again worth it to have clear skin!

I have had great success treating my adult acne with using the regime and products from Acne.org http://www.acne.org/regimen.html. It is benzyl peroxide but the method of using it is clearer than most products. Letting the benzyl peroxide totally dry before layering on sunscreen/moisturiser is key, it stops you beaching your bed sheets too. Their products are cheaper than Paula’s Choice and ProActive and their AHA cream is fab and a great price too.

As an avid fan of products both luxe and cheap-but-amazing, the one product I am amazed at its instant, no fail effectiveness is… Eye drops. If you have a nasty stinging red blemish, dab on a small amount gently with a cotton tip. No more sting, calms the area down, skin returns to normal colour! Within seconds!
No this is not permission to over-fuss! An emergency procedure only!
This is also an essential product to dab on post-eyebrow-waxing. Beats allllllll the ‘calming creams’ (sorry for going off topic!)

I haven’t read all the comments but just want to warn that some zit zapping products bleach the absolute crap out of everything – your lovely driglo towels, your jarmies, and even *sob* your lovely high-thread count sheets
Be careful! (but they do work – I love Paula’s Choice)
PS. Does anyone see the word “zit” and think of “The Zit Remedy” from Degrassi or is it just me?

Love Paula’s choice too but I have many multi-colored towels, jammies and even a patch of carpet. Be careful!

Tell me about it! I use a prescription product called EpiDuo and it’s bleached my 1000 thread count sheets!!

I’m 25 and was getting hormonal pimples on my chin that were just horrible and then someone suggested I start taking fish oil tablets and now I very rarely get them anymore. Just the odd one every month or so, but not big and scary, small and manageable, gone in a day. I’m so relieved I don’t have to deal with constant prodz anymore.
Fish oil, I swear by it.
loading...
Emma, I also love fish oil tablets. I started taking them for dermatitis a few years ago and just kept going. It’s so good for your skin – like an internal moisturiser!
loading...
Definately going to try the fish oil tablets! I don’t get a lot of breakouts but when I do it is annoying! Thanks for the tip
loading...
Does anyone know if you can take fish oil supplements when pregnant.
loading...
It’s in lots of pregnancy/conception vitamins
loading...
Just make sure it doesn’t include cod liver oil in the tablet – this is full of vitamin A which you’re advised not to take whilst pregnant.
loading...
I started taking fish oil tablets along with my pregnancy vitamins on the advice of my dietitian – I don’t eat a huge amount of fish and it’s one way to make sure you get enough omega 3s. If there are any extra things in the fish oil tablets I guess you would need to check the combination of tablets doesn’t put you on too high a supplement of any of the vitamins.

Anyone out there have a good product to help with blackheads? I swear I can never get rid of them! I’m nearly 33 surely these pesky buggers should be a thing of the past?
I use the Pervonia Botanicles range which is all natural & I use a Clarisonic but the blackheads are stubborn & refuse to go- HELP ME!!!!

Zoe did a post on this topic a few weeks ago, lots of great tips & products in that thread.
loading...
Oooohhh Zoe, can you please help me…?! Am 14 weeks pregnant and my skin has just shat itself…, am wondering if you or any of you lovely ladies can recommend something to clear them up.
Before I got pregnant I was using the Neutrogena scrub with Salicylic acid, but preggy people can’t use salicylic acid. Would love any suggestions as am sick of my icky skin. I also understand hormones are probably contributing to this.
Many thanks x
loading...
Double check salicylic acid with your OB, mine said as long as its topical and you’re not slathering yourself in it it’s fine. I’m now 26 weeks, have used it the whole way through, no probs!
loading...
Ooohh! Thank you Preg myth. Will check with the midwife on Monday, I use sparingly and rinse straight away so should be ok! Thanks again and good luck with bubs x
loading...
I have been using the Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser for the same problem for a few weeks now, I use it twice a day in place of my regular cleanser. It has cleared up a nasty hormonal breakout I had under my chin, I think it has made my skin less oily too, & it feels lovely & soft. But reading the online reviews it is not for everyone, some people get worse breakouts using it, so I would suggest buying the small travel size to give it a try before committing to the big bottle.
loading...
Benzyl peroxide is considered safe in pregnancy. However, it will bleach the crap out of all your towels and sheets – beware. It is the active ingredient in Proactive, however you can get a tube from the chemist for $5. Use sparingly – your skin may get worse before it gets better, and it may redden/peel so use sparingly. My skin was shockingly bad all through my pregnancies – so much for glowing good health!
loading...
New Name. Not sure about the products, I just carried on with my same routine. In both of my pregnancies I had shocking pimples until about week 18/20 and then the clearest skin I ever had until the end of the pregnancies.
Obviously this doesn’t help you now – but the zits could settle down..

Isn’t internet shopping the devil (I love it, I really do). Zoe suggests something, and all it takes is a few clicks of the mouse, a PayPal password and there goes my drinking money for tonight! Yay new stuff!

Can anyone suggest skincare that is both pimple fighting and anti-ageing? I am 28 and still getting some annoying spots but I also want to start being proactive with anti-ageing products.
loading...
definetly prodz with AHA/BHA, known for their anti-aging and anti-blemish properties, my favourite are from ASAP, the Daily Cleansing Wash, so worth it!!!!!
loading...
More so witrh the anti-aging. I’m 33 and I have been using Nivea Q10 day cream and night cream for about 5 years and I am happy with how my face is aging! The day cream is 15+ aswell and so I am wearing sunscreen 365 days of the year. In Summer I use nutregena day cream which is 30+

Thank you!

I started developing cysts/blind pimples in mid to late 20′s- salicylic acid did acsolutely nothing. I now use Phisohex wash from the chemist with a light Benzoyl Peroxide lotion that is only 2.5% in strength and also available from the chemist. Much gentler than the 5% and 10% strength creams and keeps me nice and clear. Heaps cheaper than Proactiv too! I just use a dab on prone areas and havent found it too strong at all.
loading...
The Kora Organics blemish gel is pretty amazing. I also find a cotton tip dipped in tea tree oil is also fab, totally dries out the dreaded pimples…
loading...
This may sound crazy, but a few weeks ago I drastically changed my skin care regimen after years and years of acne woes and failed tries with various products, drugs and treatments. It is working wonders.
I am using Manuka honey as a cleanser and mask. Sometimes mixing cinnamon, lemon juice and apple cider vinegar in the mix. That is all. No creams no zit zappers nothing that’s not 100% natural. The results have been staggering!
loading...
OOOhh that sounds divine!
What’s the ratio of ingredients?
loading...
I swear by Manuka honey too. Having battled acne for 16 years (I am now 26), I have tried everything out there and have also been on the dreaded roaccutane but nothing has come close to the results I get from just slathering on Manuka honey (Activity factor 10+ or higher) on my face and leaving it for a few hours, preferably overnight (sleep on my back to avoid sticky pillow issues). The next morning my skin is glowing and zit free. This honey works really well on the blind pimples as well the pesky red spots. Try it, you will not regret!
loading...
Moe and Kate, do you just buy manuka honey and use it or do you buy products made from manuka honey?
Whichever one you do, where do you get it from? I’ve heard alot of people rave about it but not sure whether to get just the honey or the honey based products
loading...
Hey Miss V, I buy the actual edible honey – you can ingest this as well apply topically on your skin. I use the Natural Alternative Active Manuka honey which you can get from health food shops, and there are other Manuka honey brands like Comvita etc that you can use too.
loading...
I will definitely buy that this weekend! Thanks Moe!
loading...
thanks! will be on the look out for it!
loading...
I have heard great things about Manuka honey’s healing properties for all sorts of ailments. I am definitely going to try it for my acne.
loading...
I am going to try this too, thanks : )
loading...
Proactiv, hands down. Can’t believe Zoe didn’t mention it. It’s the only thing that really, consistently works, other than go to the dermatologist for The Serious Stuff.
loading...
Not if you have sensitive skin. Honestly it was like I had been dipped in acid.
loading...
Agreed! This stuff tortured my skin.
loading...
Aggghhh agree! I tried it and it bleached my pillow cases!
loading...
Proactiv basically burnt my skin and then it turned into a giant scab. Definetly not for sensitive skin which of course they don’t tell you when you first purchase
loading...
thanks for the tip! I had considered using it but I have sensitive skin. Glad I read this before purchase
loading...
My girlfriend’s skin “felt like rocks” to use her words, and she doesn’t have sensitive skin wither. The problem is, you don’t need your entire face dried out, just the blemishes. It would be so ageing on your skin too drying it out all the time.
loading...
Proactive is a rip-off! The active ingredient is benzyl peroxide which you can buy from the chemist for about 5 bucks. You can also buy weaker concentrations from the chemist (eg 2.5 or 5% instead of 10%) so if you’ve got sensitive skin it won’t leave you so red and raw. Buying proactive is like handing over $50 for a $2 bottle of water and saying ‘keep the change’…
loading...
I’m no spring chicken and still get pimples – very annoying. I cant do without my Almay Concealer when I have a breakout (its great under eyes to) problem solved
loading...
I was one of those lucky teenagers with clear skin all through school. I am now one of those unlucky mid-twenty year olds where pimples erupted on my chin. Painful blind pimples too. They would almost appear one after the other. Just when one would finish another would appear. Because I was so embarrassed by them I would cover them up with make up as best I could, which would give them no time to heal. But there was no way I was going out in public without coverage!
I gave Proactiv a go. And it worked. Slowly the chin pimples became less and less and I started using lighter powder foundations which probably helped too. Basically it helped me push through the cycle of big pimples and squeezing disasters and now I’m happy to be seen by others in little or no makeup.
loading...
Kate I was exactly the same and tried Proactive and it too worked wonders for me. But i’ve been off proactive for about 8 months and within a couple of weeks of not using it, they came back. Proactive is great but for me, i wanted to use more natural products and they don’t appear as often but they still appear.
loading...
That’s a good point MissV. One day of course I’d like to go off it altogether and like you they would probably just come back. Bit of a bandaid solution, hey? At the moment I don’t use it too religiously as I use a lighter foaming cleanser at night (although I’ll still use the treatment cream). Slowly I will wean myself off it, but I’ll keep your experiences in mind
loading...
Proactiv! Proactiv! Proactiv! Can’t recommend it enough. I have used it for 8 yrs now and it still works to just maintain my skin and have a clear complexion. I don’t use their moisturiser though, I just use the Olay $12 one for sensitive skin. I have now got my son using it who is unfortunately going through the terrible teenage hormonal years, yesterday he actually came up to me and said Mum, Proactiv really works!!
As for those blind per menstrual pimples that take weeks to disappear, get yourself onto Vitex tablets. They are from Priceline and once I started taking them every day I haven’t had one of those blind pimples in years.
loading...
Great article. Unfortunately my acne does not respond to any of the usual zit zappers so I’m on Retin A. The principle is the same – apply a small amount to clean dry skin.
A few people are asking about Proactiv. It is more or less a Benzoyl Peroxide based skincare system. BP is quite harsh and will bleach fabrics. I would recommend that those with sensitive skin avoid it. I tried a BP product – Oxy – once and I received a lovely chemical burn for my trouble.
Some do have success with Proactiv while I’ve heard others say the results were good at first but did not last.
As for red marks, I’m finding that my Retin A has faded these quite a lot over time. IPL laser is worth looking into as well.
loading...
Proactiv really worked for me. Once the initial drying settled down (it is very drying initially). I not once had a breakout with it. Don’t think I’d use long-term though unless I had problem skin, but I swear by Proactiv for those teenage hormonal years.

ok weird question for anyone out there.
i swear the pimples i get now at 25 are different to those of a teen. When i was a teen i got the on my cheeck and chin and forehead and you could tell it was from dirty/whatever you want to call it pores. I still get this sometimes when i dont take off my makeup.
I also however, now get pimples in a patch on the right side of my chin. If i treat these or pop these (i know zoe- bad) they dont seem to heal but instead puff up and are almost like a reaction. I quite often see other girls with this also and someone once mentioned it was hormonal (but different from teen hormones???? i dunno). Anyways i was just wondering if anyone else has this and if they use the same treatment as normal pimples..(it so much more sensitive..).. Ok i know i sound vague .. but i swear they are different
loading...
I totally get what you mean. I’m 23 and have the same problem. Definitely different to ‘teenager pimples’, unfortunately I have no idea how to help – so would love to hear an answer to this question too!
loading...
I have this too! It started when I was 25 and it sucks!
loading...
Could the pimples in a patch on the side of your chin be from your phone? I read somewhere that phones can get really grotty and holding them against your face can cause skin blemishes. It made me paranoid!
loading...
I have this too! I was told it was the ‘stress’ area…
loading...
I think it might be stress, too. I get huge breakouts on my chin when all my uni assignments are due!
loading...
Get it checked out by a doctor – I was having problems with pimple thingies very much like that last year (same place and everything), and spent like, 2 months trying a million different things. The pharmacist eventually told me she was out of ideas, so I should go to the doctor. The doctor looked at it for about 30 seconds, decided it was some form of oral dermatitis and gave me antibiotics that cleared it up. I had to take them for about a month initially, but I only have to take them for about a week when it comes back now. It’s apparently bacterial, but doesn’t really have any known cause, so you can’t really prevent it – you can only treat it when it flares up.
loading...
I’m 24 and these have just started on my face, especially around the jaw area. Very different, more painful pimples that just don’t go away! A friend of mine said the chin and jaw zone are a hormonal zone but that does not just mean PMS and puberty, but things like thyroid gland and if your body is reacting to allergies/toxic things in the body. I don’t want to give out medical advice, Dr Google style, but I tried cutting out wheat (apparently a common allergen) from my diet and they cleared up within days. I’m booked in to see a nutritionist to see if this wheat = external reaction thing is real or in my head, but until then I’m not eating wheat and my skin is better than it has been in a lonnnnnng time!
Also I use Dermalogica Overnight Clearing Gel – it’s active ingredient is Salicylic acid which seems to kill germs and calm down skin. Lovely!
loading...
Salicylic acid = Asprin, google the asprin facemask, it works well & is a super cheap alternative to expensive Salicylic acid acne products.
loading...
I get this too! I’m 28 this year and have recently stopped using the pill. I now have acne and the pimples are exactly like what you’ve said. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!
loading...
I am exactly the same as you Metoo! Off the bill am bam, weird annoying pimples.
loading...
I am 38 and still get those – tends to be around the time of my period or when I’ve eaten bacon!
loading...
Story of my life! NEVER had a single pimple as a teen. Starte the pill in early 20′s and literally it started the day after, I swear! Now a month off my 30th b’day with a 5 month old daughter and it’s still affecting me! I scar really badly too so I end up with big purple lumps under y skin (mainly jawline or beside my mouth) whenever I have a decent sized one – even if I DON’T squeeze! I can’t win! I’m now juggling agreeing skin with persistent ‘youth’ issues! Argh!
loading...
I get this too! What I have found that works is using hydrocortisone cream (sensitive skin one). It is naughty to use this stuff too much but I have found that using it for two nights when spots appear they then go. I then moisturise like crazy afterwards to try and rectify any damage caused by the hydrocortisone cream. Also, the cream is available over the counter at the chemist, without a prescription.
loading...
Arrgh, please don’t recommend hydrocortisone on the face. It’s a big no-no (although the 1% is unlikely to do much damage), and moisturising will not prevent steroid-induced damage to the skin. Some types of peri-oral dermatitis are made much worse by applying steroids.

I’m (almost) 25 and tend to only get pimples on my chin too, normally to the sides. And I have a terrible habit of poking them and making them worse but THEY’RE JUST SO INVITING

According to Chinese medicine, the chin corresponds with the ovaries. In my time as a beauty therapist I have seen this theory proven true again and again! Have your ovarian health checked!
And jawline pimples (especially if they are deep, slightly painful, and just underneath the jaw) are a clear sign that your lymphatic drainage is not functioning at its optimum. Before you go all crazy with the Proactiv, try the following for jawline breakouts:
1. Have a facial and ask your therapist to include lymphatic drainage massage and high frequency.
2. Improve your diet!!!!!! Cut out junk and include more whole foods.
3. Exercise. Lymph movement depends on skeletal muscle movement.
loading...
Agree, this sort of acne is very often associated with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), particularly in adults. I had an ultrasound and sure enough, my ovaries are covered in cysts.
loading...
These are often cysts – can be v painful, last for ages, sometimes don’t head. Often caused by stress, which causes the hormone that cause them. Are much deeper in the skin than normal pimples. If they’re becoming a real problem, a dermatologist can prescribe stuff to treat them properly (even an injection straight into the site, which sounds ghastly but actually instantly heals the problem), as these buggers often require more than your over-counter stuff.
loading...
Apparently the pimples along your jawline/chin are hormonal and nothing to do with dirty skin etc… I found changing pills cleared them up.
loading...
I had those on my neck, they would break open and the lymph fluid drain out, an hour later they were full again.
I tried rosehip oil. I put it on my neck and lower jaw, they went and have never returned.
Not sure why but I find the kosmea brand the best.
loading...
Diluted tea tree oil kills those little bastards dead and I avoid moisturizer around the pimple for a night or two while it dries out.
loading...
I use Malin+Goetz Acne Treatment on spots, it’s similar to the Mario Badescu product. It is AH-MAZING and $35 from Mecca. Dries them out overnight and works brilliantly. The only downside is having white pasty spots on your face, but as long as your boyf/flatmate doesn’t mind, then it’s all good!
loading...
Zoe…do you have a view on Proactiv products?
loading...
I’m not Zoe, but if you don’t mind me jumping in here, Proactiv are really just strong benzoyl peroxide products – of which you can buy cheaper dupes for at any chemist. Proceed with caution however, that stuff is hella strong and almost destroyed my skin!
loading...
Mmm, I’m not Zoe either but I’ll give my two cents! Proactiv is realllly strong, and like Lucy, it gave my skin a run for its money.. Ouch! After only a few days of using it, my skin was red and felt like it was raw and so tingly. I’ve heard similar things from many other people.. A bit disappointing since I was hoping it’d be great! Obviously you may have different results but it is very strong.
loading...
Hi, I’m Melissa my two cents worth re ProActiv is that it changed my life. Sounds dramatic, I know. I went through my teenage years with a peaches-and-cream complexion; got to 22 and bam! Acne on my chin. Constantly. Suffered through it, tried different (contraceptive) pills, diets, topical antibiotics….etc. When I was pregnant with my son, my skin was the worst; with my daughter, it was fantastic. Go figure. Anyhoo, finally bit the bullet a year ago at age 30 and got ProActiv and never looked back. I feel like a new person every time I look in the mirror. It is amazing. Sure, it dries the crap out of your skin but as you get used to it you can tweak the regime so it suits you and you get a balance between dryness and cleanliness. Couldn’t recommend it enough. Wish I’d bought it 8 years ago.
loading...
This was something i have been wondering about for years! Very helpful as always Zoe
Does anyone have a face cream suggestion for sensitive/acne prone adult skin?? I’m always worried something heavy will cause breakouts.
loading...
I use SIMPLE Hydrating Light Moisturiser. It is fragrance free, cheap, only about $10 and they also have a more rich one but I havent tried that. I have dry skin and it is moisturising enough for me though. It isnt greasy at all and if I feel a bit dry after using it I just use a bit more.
loading...
I LOVE Jurlique.
I use the sensitive rang.
Amazing.

Thanks for these tips. My Mum (who’s in her 50s) was horrified to get a pimple the other week and didn’t know what to do. I will pass these on.

Hi Zoe,
I use Differin cream at night and was wondering whether I also should be using a moisturiser at night?
Also, do you know if you can use Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum while using Differin? I have some acne scarring on my cheeks and would like to help fade it using the serum, but am not sure if it is okay to do this while still using Differin?
Thank you!
loading...
Hi Acacia
I use differin cream at night as well and my dermatologist recommended using moisturiser with it. However, she recommends putting moisturiser on first then waiting a minute and putting the differin on. This is because the differin is so strong it is best to have a barrier between the skin and it. For things that contain benzoyl peroxide you can put them straight on your skin.
As for the fading creams, I asked my dermatologist about these as well (was planning to use one after I’ve done my course of differin) and she said that there is no evidence they work. Instead use a good general serum and good moisturiser and they will fade in time.
Just my experience, maybe some others out there?

Thanks for your advice Leni!

There are some excellent fading serums/creams out there that do work (there’s clinical proof of their efficacy) but I’m not sure if you could use them whilst on Differin as that sensitises your skin. Just make sure you use sunscreen religiously as the sun will make the scarring worse otherwise!

The pimples suck but what sucks more is the crappy red marks they leave for weeks after.
Any recommendations to deal with those feisty fuckers Zoe?

Excellent question and not a short answer – let me attack it next week!

Oh, please DO.
I have no active volcanoes today, but numerous reddy-purple marks on cheek and chin that are letting down the whole facade. Punishment for picking, I assume, but I suspect it’s not the initial pop that is causing scarring, but impatiently messing with the flaky dry patch you mentioned. I’m plucking at little flakes that aren’t ready to be plucked, and creating scar tissue. Yikes.
Thanks Zoe, adore you weekly wisdom

I’ve just started (again after a long break) using some of the Paula’s Choice products and have found that the red marks are clearing really quickly. I have found with her stuff you really have to find the products that suit your skin, but when they do, they really do.
I use the resist toner (an anti oxidant wonderland) followed by the Resist daily smoothing treatment (AHA and BHA at the right PH levels to actually work) and then the toner and Retinol Serum at night – sometimes with a mix of vit E and Rosehip oil on top. Once a week I use the weekly resurfacing treatment.
In just a few weeks the (positive) change in my skin is really noticeable. The texture is better, the slight crinkling on my neck has gone, pimples are clearing up quickly and those pesky eye wrinkly bits are ever so slightly less evil.
I am a big fan of John over at TheTripleHelixLiaison he is a total skincare fiend and is really helpful. I also get a lot of good info from Paula Begoun’s ‘Beautipedia’. I kind of see Zoe, John and Paula as the holy trinity of skin wonder.

I love Paula’s Choice products, too!
I’ve been using them for years and always get told I have lovely skin.
Paula Begoun knows her shit. Her info on her website is invaluable. For those who haven’t heard of her, check out her Cosmetics Cop website (cosmeticscop.com).

Finacea cream/gel (about $22 from Chemist Warehouse). Made for both rosacea and acne, and also reduces redness.

This will sound weird, but Pawpaw ointment is incredible. It heals up any open ‘wounds’ very quickly, relieves the dry flakiness and any itchiness that goes with it (so makes you want to pick at it less) and generally removes the irritation and sore quite quickly. I think it’s pretty close to being a miracle product and mild enough to use on any skin – even a baby’s (it is dynamite on nappy rash – clears a mild dose in one application).

My HG of zit zapping is Ella Bache’s Creme Intex #2.
I have no idea why it works so well, but it was recommended to me to help fight an under-the-skin infection on my chin and jawline last year. Its expensive, but it has lasted 6 months so far, and is nowhere near empty. I put it on under my makeup, and also at night, and I honestly cant rave enough!

Oh and its also great for ingrown hairs! Multi-tasking FTW!

Good advice and good timing. After a stressful couple of weeks applying for, interviewing for, and getting a new job (hurrah for me) followed by the awkward conversations with my current bosses about leaving and the nervous energy of knowing I start in just 1 week my skin is a disaster zone. I really don’t want to turn up to my new job looking like a adolescent who’s playing grown up (I’m 34!). Thanks a bundle Zoe.

Yes, good timing Zoe, just had angry break out yesterday!
Joy! *cough* sarcasm *cough*
Congrats on the new job, Shannon!
