You know how Zoe Foster has joined Mamamia as our new contributing editor and she’ll be posting fresh, exclusive beauty content twice a week from October 25? Yes, that. While we’re drumming our fingers impatiently waiting for that happy day to arrive, I’ve been thinking about what she’s taught me.
Now that the dust (or loose powder) has settled and it’s a few months since I inhaled Zoe Foster’s Amazing Face book, I thought I’d tell you the 11 most saliant lessons that have stayed with me. The things I’ve stuck to that have made the most difference to my beauty routine.
1. Serums. I never understood serums. They sounded complicated and slightly medical and maybe requiring a syringe. But no! It turns out they were a crucial aspect of my skincare that was missing. A serum goes on under your moisturiser. I’ve tried a few different ones – and Zoe recommends a few in her book of varying prices - but the important thing is that you use one (if you want to, obviously). I thought piling on all those products on top of each other would make my skin too greasy but if you wait a minute between each layer, it doesn’t. As my skin ages, it turns out it needs more juice
2. Use an angled brush for eyeliner: I never knew about angled brushes! No wonder my dark eye shadows looked like big fuzzy textas when I tried to shade along my lashline! My brush was neither small enough nor angled! If I had to pick one brush in the world to take to a desert island (weird island, admittedly), it would be this one. And my toothbrush. Has totally transformed the way I do my eye make-up.
3. Triangles under your eyes: I’ve had those gold YSL pen thingies (their technical name is Touche Eclat) for years because everyone else did (baaaaa) but I never knew quite what to do with them. I kind of used them as a concealer. That’s what they are right? Wrong. Lots of companies make them now but if you have one, do not use it as a concealer. You’re meant to draw an upside down triangle under your eye (not too close to your lower lashline) and then dab to blend. It reflects light upwards apparently. Now you know.
4. Dab don’t rub: did you know you were meant to dab in your concealer (and illuminator) under and around your eyes. You are. Rubbing stretches the delicate skin which doesn’t spring back QUITE the way it used to….ahem. In this video, Zoe shows the kind of dabbing patting thing you do with your finger. It also sets it much better instead of rubbing which actually rubs it off and defeats the purpose. Duh.
5. A brilliant undereye concealer: this one from Covergirl & Olay. It’s called Simply Ageless. It’s not expensive (Priceline and supermarkets) and it goes on like a dream. Zoe swears by it. Me too now.
Here’s a brilliant video from Zoe which explains how to get that wide-awake look:
6. Bronzer is easier than it looks: Again, I never knew what to do with bronzer so I sort of just fluffed it over my face and ended up looking like an Ooompa Loompah. Often. Zoe explained “The Backwards 3″ which makes it all much clearer. Here’s how to do “The Backwards 3″:
7. These eye-make-up remover pads are essential.
I used to just used my cleanser all over my face including to get my eye make-up off and more often than not, I ended up panda-like. These are gentle, you don’t have to pull on the skin around your eyes (see point 4) and they take off even waterproof mascara. They’re coming with me to the desert island. With my angled brush. And my iPhone so I can call for someone to get me the hell out of there.
8. Don’t goop product on your head: I do this – do you do this? Squirt some mousse or styling creme or something and dump it straight on top of your head. Bad idea. Work it into the ends not the scalp or your hair will be lank and blah.
9. Enough with the glitter.
I have this friend – let’s call her Louise Bell – who has always worn sparkles around her eyes. Of course I have copied her for years and have never pulled it off in the whimsical, faintly hippy glam way that she always has. Zoe reminded me that I am (a) not Tinkerbell, and (b) not 5 years old.
10. Bright lipsticks are the bomb: I have never worn hot pink lipstick in my life except for when I was about 5 and after reading Amazing Face. Zoe explains that bright lipsticks – oranges, pinks, reds – are not a trend, they’re a staple. Like a nude lip. And who knew a brunette with olive skin could wear fuschia? But I can. And I do. I now have a vast assortment of bright lippies – most from Revlon who do brilliant ones that aren’t expensive. My favourites are Melonade and Fire & Ice.
11. Browns and prunes are generally unflattering.
This was a biggie. Life-changing. WELL, lip-changing. Sadly, 99% of my lipsticks used to be variations on this colour. Slight variations. None of them particularly suited me and yet I was stuck in an Unflattering Lipstick Rut. Perhaps you are too. Colour is now my friend. Make it yours. Go on.
What’s the best beauty tip you have? Sharing is caring.

I can’t find Melonade at any Revlon counter in Perth. What gives? Is it all just a grand scheme to send me on a fruitless (!) search for delicious sounding watermelon coloured lippy?
Save me from the endless repeat-buying of pinky-browns.

I begged my husband to find this for me in a bookshop when he was interstate recently. I love love it and I’ve only just finished the part on skin care. I went shopping yesterday and took Miss 4… the Clarins lady gave her a freebie cleansing gel (teeny size)… we had a great time looking for things to start my new skin care regime. So even though I have not yet finished the book, the biggest lesson I’ve learned was that all the makeup in the world won’t have nearly as good an effect unless you have a good canvas to put it on. Bring on the skin care!

Thanks to Zoe I now use concealer (not sure how you use it after foundation as I use a mineral powder – anyone?) and today is my first day wearing bright red lippy (Revlon ‘true red’) – two compliments within five mins of application!!! Ordered Amazing Face online yesterday. Thanks Mia and Zoe (and Paula Joye who keeps me up to date with fashion – although as a new Mum I can’t always wear it!)

Best and cheapest makeup remover? Baby wipes.
If it’s ph is good enough for a baby’s bot bot, it’s good enough for my face
I’ve also become converted to Bio oil this pregnancy. Wonderful on cracked lips, for the crows feet/sleepless nights and to stop old lady, Madonna hands.

One other thing, I just finished reading “Playing the field” by Zoe and I really like how “pro sisterhood” she is. Girls can be so bitchy and narky but Zoe is willing to share all her secrets/ tips/ insecurities in a really endearing and generous way. It’s very refreshing to see a girl do that and somehow gives me more confidence,
Does anyone else get that?

So I’m 36 with thin lips, should I really be trying a bright lipstick? Isn’t this going to emphasise the fact that my lips are thin?
a WordPress rating system
I’ve got thin lips too but I’ve started wearing all kinds of bright shades — I love the Illamasqua lipsticks. The way I get away with it looking to painted on is a slick of Blistex over the top so they look glossy and shiny.

I’ve really enjoyed Zoe’s book and especially the how to videos. However it concerns me that many of the products she recommends are manufactured by companies that continue to test ingredients on animals. I know the issue of animal testing got lots of attention in the early nineties but it seems to me that we have all sort of dropped the ball on this issue.
As Zoe eloquently points out, beauty products are glorious frivolities that can be lots of fun and can make us attack the day with a spark in our step. I completely agree (working the bright lip with gusto). But I would never consider any beauty product so essential that it is worth the suffering of an animal. Animal testing of beauty products is therefore completely nonessential, and many companies make great products without such methodologies (Revlon is one – get me to the Melonade lipstick!).
Mammamia has some wonderful editorial policies, for example not showing photoshopped images – because a beautiful image is not worth the negative side effects, the warped expectations of what women look like. I think we need to be reminded that some beauty products also have their ethical price tag. Perhaps this issue warrants a policy decision too?
a WordPress rating system
I think this is a great idea
Testing on animal is horrible. Maybe Zoe can do 2 recommendations. One for everyone, and one for those who only buy non animal testing brands who also don’t use animal products in their items.

Love this post- thank you.
Can anyone recommend a dry shampoo and a bronzer too?
a WordPress rating system
Its hard to recommend a good bronzer and dry shampoo without knowing your skin/hair colour, but for my pale skin and dark hair, I use the Body shop bronzer (#2 shade), and the Batiste Brown dry shampoo – both reasonably priced and I personally love them
a WordPress rating system
I love my NARS laguna bronzer and I’m quite pale, its a bit pricey though much cheaper if you can source from the states. For dry shampoo I just use the chemist one called Klorane, its super cheap and works great.
a WordPress rating system
Thank you both. I’ve dark, dry hair and olive skin. Will check the brands out that you’ve suggested! Thanks again.
a WordPress rating system
I’ve used Bobbi Brown bronzer for years. It contains no sparkle, completely matt and always get compliments. I use ‘medium’ as I’m quite olive but have many pale friends who have started using it in ‘light’ after my recommendation and they love it.
I still get compliments!

Hemaroid cream (like Anusol) is awesome for reducing swelling or puffiness under the eyes when you are super tired.
I layer it on and leave for about 15 minutes then gently remove it, and then apply eye cream then my usual make up routine.
I swear it works!

Drag queens have been using that trick for decades! Far cheaper than fancy under eye patches.

ok I DON’T THINK I HAVE EVER COMMENTED BEFORE.. ok.. but i’m saying this.. I LOVE HOW ZOE FOSTER HAS JOINED MAMMA MIA!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok.. that’s all.. (caps were necessary)

Make up has never been too much of a problem for me. I can’t for the life of me do a straight upper lash line but hey that’s what an angled brush and black powder are for! Other than that my biggest lessons have been to not spend money on things when you can either make your own or go simple. I use baby wipes because with anything else my skin will break out! I made a face mist of lavender oil and varies other oils. And it works much better than a moisturizer. Olive oil is amazing on skin and hair but rinse rinse rinse! A tiny bit of bronzer under your eye usually looks better than concealor. That and a white eye pencil or eye shadow makes you look wide awake. Foundation needs to be warmed in your hands before being put on your face. And I usually finish by placing my hands on my face and patting a few times to really settle the foundation and avoid cake face. Oh and blend blend blend! Especially past the neck line. If your foundation is darker than your neck it’s such a bad look. Bronzer and blending will make it look natural. Eyebrow pencil are awesome! Also can you please do some make up suggestions for us pale, freckled redheads?? It’s so hard to find good colour that doesn’t a) wash us out or b) bring out too many red tones. People always tell me to use a yellow base foundation but a pink based one has always been more flattering?? Odd?? Love this piece btw
a WordPress rating system
Lavender Oil is really bad for peeps with sensitive skin… Use with caution it can thin the epidermis
a WordPress rating system
Yikes, didn’t know that. Luckily I didn’t have any pure! I might substitute that with rose hip oil next time. Cos I also put in a touch of eucalyptus cos I have combination skin.
a WordPress rating system
I have started using the Covergirl Olay concealer thanks to Zoe talking about it in one of her videos. It is brilliant, only about $15 and I look so much younger and awake, Zoe is a genius, so glad she is a regular now. xx
a WordPress rating system
Currently revamping my cosmetics kit courtesy of Zoe’s wisdom… on today’s shopping list was rosehip oil, angled eyeliner brush and the eye-makeup remover pads. Priceline loves me today!
Last week it was Mecca to get foundation to suit my skin and an eyebrow pencil. Yes, I now colour my eyebrows in! Can’t belive what a difference it makes, especially since I have pale, sparse eyebrows and dark brown hair.
Thanks for all your tips Zoe x
a WordPress rating system
Also, found Almay and Covergirl eyeshadow sets for specific eye colours that have a picture of how to apply… genius for an eye makeup novice/incompetent like me!!
a WordPress rating system
Hey there, as a recommendation from a pale chicky with very light eyebrows, I finally took the risk and got them dyed, it was a hell of a scare to start with and I felt like I looked full on but when I got to work none of the boys noticed even when I told them. After a few days the dye on your skin goes and leaves you with great looking eyebrows if its been done right. I wear less make up now as I finally have some framing to my face!
a WordPress rating system
ok so what bright lipstick would you suggest for an ageing redhead??
a WordPress rating system
Love the redheads! Have to say that a bright lipstick on an aging redhead is probably not the best move but if you’re wanting to brighten up your face go for a orangey red but a softer orangey red, trust me Colour is my thing especially redheads x
a WordPress rating system
Love these, love Zoe!
However the environmentalist in me hates disposable make-up removers of any kind (#7), even if they are desert island worthy. Nothing wrong with a warm face washer and some cream or foamy make-up remover.

I am slightly confused…. Are we supposed to use a serum, then a moisturizer, then a sunscreen, then primer, then base? isn’t that ALOT of product?
a WordPress rating system
Excellent question!
a WordPress rating system
Serum under moisturizer only at night.
For day, sunscreen, then tinted moisturizer (although I use a tinted broad spectrum sunscreen from Sunsense, cheap and available at the chemist) then foundation if you need it.
I only use primer if it’s special occasion makeup and then it’s usually nighttime so I skip the sunscreen.
a WordPress rating system
Good tips Ebony!
But what about when you are out in the sun in the afternoon… and you’ve applied sunscreen and moisturiser and make-up etc in the morning. Sunscreen protection doesn’t last all day so I never know what to do in the afternoon short of washing my face and starting all over again, which is a bit hard when you’re out and about…
a WordPress rating system
Good point! Let me know when you figure it out
a WordPress rating system
neutrogena does a fabulous aerosol version of sunscreen, no touching required, and it’s non-greasy too!
a WordPress rating system
There is another fab daily face called You Me & Everybody Shady Lady, it’s not as thick as sunsense more like a moisturiser but 30+!!!!
a WordPress rating system
Obviously sunscreen for day is a must but don’t use an SPF moisturizer at night if you want to look good in photos. The SPF does weird things with the flash.
a WordPress rating system
Golden Rule Number 1…..never share your makeup with anyone else ! Do you know how many germs are on the end of your lippy or mascara applicator ?
Lots ! That’s how many !
a WordPress rating system
Inside first! 9 fish oil tablets a day , 3 with each meal vital greens ( tastes pretty bad but worth it) & of course water!
a WordPress rating system
9!!!!!!??????? Does fishoil help with skin?
a WordPress rating system
I couldn’t agree more with sentiment Number 7. I would be totally lost without makeup removal pads when I experiment with the Zoe Foster “Smokey Eye” technique.
And because there a so many in the pack, my wife doesn’t miss the odd few that I use here and there !
a WordPress rating system
Can’t wait for Zoe to start!
And I agree, bright lipsticks are an absolute MUST!!
a WordPress rating system
If you have pigment issues, Meladerm is phenomenal!
You have to ship it from the States, but it’s botanical and way cheaper than, say, the Priori range. It works better than anything else I’ve tried. Your skin looks luminous. Can be used by any skin tone, including all ethnic shades.
a WordPress rating system
Oh you need to share more about this? Zoe only talks advertiser products, so I need more ideas!
a WordPress rating system
Hey Belle,
Google “Priori: Coffeeberry range”. It is a range that helps rejuvenate and brighten any spots, pigmentation, etc cos it’s got AHA’s in it. Awesome stuff.
I’ve used the night cream and eye cream. Eye cream was a bit too strong for me so gave that to my mum and she seems to love it!
a WordPress rating system
#1 makeup is FUN! be silly and PLAY a lot.
#2 get a ‘makeover’ every year. I go to my Bobbi Brown counter or Mecca for a refresh of whats new in makeup, techniques etc, and they are usually either free or redeemable against product. Its my way of staying relevant, plus its awesome to have someone bring out your beauty for an hour!
#3 SUNSCREEN esp face, neck, decolletage, and back of hands. EVERY DAY. 30+. Non negotiable.
#4 Your face includes your neck and decolletage – this goes for cleansing, masks, moisturising, serums etc.
#5 Organic Rosehip oil is the cheapest way to get soft glowing beautiful skin. A real multi tasking gem. I like Trilogy.
#6 Spend most of your allocated ‘makeup’ money on skincare – like an 80/20 ratio. Beautiful bare skin is the holy grail. ie spend $80 out of a $100 monthly budget on the Ultraceuticals serum (i use it too it is AWESOME) and $20 on a bright loreal, revlon or rimmel lippie.
#7 Everyone can do red lippie. Go to a makeup counter to get colour matched, try different brands, but its a true love that will last forever once you get started.
#8 read consumer reviews – its a great way to understand how the product REALLY works on the ‘real people’. I check out makeupalley often.
#9 Nothing is more beautiful than a happy face and a big gorgeous smile!!
a WordPress rating system
I NEED to get this book!!
a WordPress rating system
Instead of a serum under your moisturiser, will rose hip oil do the same job?
a WordPress rating system
Yes, because it is a type of Serum – well so Zoe says in Amazing Face!
a WordPress rating system
Yes I think so! I have done this since reading the book and really notice the difference! I also started using a pre-cleansing oil (dermalogica) which has really cleared my skin up – no more blotchy skin and I have not had a breakout since!
a WordPress rating system
I can’t wait for Zoe to start writing!! I bought Amazing Face and LOVED IT. And I am doing so many skin care/makeup things differently now – and with excellent effect! Bring it on Fosters!!!
a WordPress rating system
My copy of amazing face arrived yesterday and I LOVE IT!
My thing is coconut oil – one part oil to two parts sea salt makes a great body scrub, use it as a conditioner and on a baby’s head overnight then brush/comb in the bath to get rid of cradle cap.
I’ve just ordered two more copies for my SIL and bestie. I am convinced!
a WordPress rating system
Mecca stock a waxy/solid oil cleanser from Eve Lom that’s about $160ish, and is touted as ‘the best cleanser in the world’…massage it on, then massage it off with warm, damp cloth…..
Lush have an excellent ‘dupe’, called Ultrabland…$20 for a small tub that will last a few months…..you can actually identify the ingredients in the ingredient list, it’s the BEST cleanser, and removes all makeup (including waterproof mascara) at once. Skin has never felt better. I have combo skin, which is now normalising while using this…and first cleanser ever where I don’t break out AT ALL. And they’ll give you a sample to try at home if you’re weirded out by using oil to clean your face.
a WordPress rating system
Clarins pure melt cleansing gel very good too, gel turns into oil once you rub it in and smells Devine $34 on strawberrynet
a WordPress rating system
used morocconoil for the first time last night – never thought i would be able to say this but….I LOVE MY HAIR!! soooo glad I discovered this product before summer!
I have bought a red lipstick which I haven’t yet been game to wear, mostly because I don’t have a lipliner – can anyone recommend a good lipliner for me to buy please?
a WordPress rating system
I’ve got a great ysl one that is soft but doesn’t bleed – very important! Make sure the liner matches the red ie blue based or yellow based also best tip gor applying red lipy is put your foundation over your lips this will ensure no bleeding and gives you a perfect canvas to work with! Red lipstick is high maintenance but oh do worth it!
a WordPress rating system
Just on the foundation or concealer first question, if you’ve found PERFECT colour matches for both or you are happy to spend a few minutes blending, then yes, apply foundation first. But if your foundation and concealer are slightly different shades, or set differently (eg. concealer is matte, foundation is dewy) then apply concealer first or not at all. I’ve seen two girls in my office today who must have switched to a darker shade of foundation for summer, but are still using the same pale concealer. And I often see women wearing very glowy, dewy foundations with patches of heavy matte concealer over the top, and it makes them look like they have a skin condition.
a WordPress rating system
Thanks Anon. You make a good point. My concealer is lighter than my foundation, so I worry it will show too much if I apply it after the foundation.
a WordPress rating system
I have bucked all my skincare rules and bought the Garnier BB cream. It works as advertised for me. I don’t have to wear makeup some days. Not that you HAVE to wear makeup, but you know…
I am torn between the efficacy of the product versus my skincare rules!
(Skincare rules run on a theme of do not apply anything that I wouldn’t be happy eating.)
a WordPress rating system
I was wondering about the BB cream Sparky. I have been searching high and low for a cost effective tinted moisturiser type thing that doesn’t contain nasties. No luck so far but saw the add for Garnier and thought I’d check it out… do you love it?
a WordPress rating system
Thanks to you i am now wearing concealer dabbed on gently under my eyes and getting lots of positive feedback about how less tired i look. Think i will get the bright lippy this week. Feeling inspired about make up again after almost ditching it forever.
a WordPress rating system
OMG all those tips sound great. Except the glitter one. I’ve been wearing Bloom’s charcoal shadow liner (with the offending ingredient) for about 5 years & I’m on the wrong side of 40. I figured that life is too short not to sparkle every day….. Thoughts? Am I too old at 45?? (gulp)
a WordPress rating system
No way! Glitter is for all ages! I think when you’re a proper grown up you just have to make it look more subtle and classy
a WordPress rating system
Just be careful the glitter doesn’t settle into any wrinkles you may or may not have, that’s the only resdon I’ve stoped using shimmering stuff as it tends to highlight areas I wish to hide!!!!!
a WordPress rating system
We’re talking big solid chunky gitter here aren’t we, not shimmer? Shimmer is no-one’s friend it just gets everywhere.
a WordPress rating system
REally? I love me a shimmer shadow (right side of 40, but only just)…….
a WordPress rating system
It’s so messy but, it gets everywhere. Are we talking about shimmer powder here? Maybe I rub my eyes too much, but anything shimmer powder-y gets eeeverywhere on my face.
Maybe we’re talking about different kinds of shimmer. I’m confused. I do like glitter but.

Love Love Love Zoe… and after reading her book until the pages were worn out I have
Purchased:
* YSL Gold Pen – good on eyelips for wide awake look too
* Tubular mascara – how brilliant and easy to use and remove (Blinc)
* Serum – cheapie for day (rosehip oil) and $$$ (prevage) one for night – many compliments received!!
* Gorgeous BRIGHT pink lipstick – Lustering from MAC
*Bronzer – and can apply and not look like I need a good wash
* Benefit Eye Bright pencil…. have to admit to not having a love affair tho
Now conceal after foundation!
Keep the beauty tips coming….

I loved this post! Thank you.
I’ve *just* come from a class in which we were playing the role of ‘sub-editor’ – so please forgive me for this but there’s a few things in the post which need fixing. Am genuinely just alerting you in case you wanted to fix them.
Dessert vs Desert: you’ve used both, but I think you meant ‘desert’
Styling creme: maybe that’s another way of spelling ‘cream’
Organges: oranges?
WEll: all caps or all lower case?
As for beauty tips? I’m the one taking notes, not giving them. I’m unsure of whether concealer goes on before or after foundation. Anyone?
a WordPress rating system
After foundation.
a WordPress rating system
I’ve decided she meant dessert in both. Sounds tasty.
a WordPress rating system
Cheers scoop, have fixed!

Oh, Nat, you ruined it!

I know Miss T, I’m sorry!

I’ll forgive you

You’re welcome Nat! Thanks alexiayiallouros, I have been putting it on before foundation and a friend mentioned it was the other way around but I wasn’t sure.
Dessert is oh so tasty MissT, we can take it on our desert island with the makeup

Sorry, I’m a 35 yr old with no clue about make-up or beauty (am planning to buy Zoe’s book as soon as I manage to get myself and the tribe out for a frivolous shopping trip) but I’m a very keen student. Really want to know what ‘dry shampoo’ involves? And am loving the other tips…. Am so happy that you are all recommending products from the supermarket, because the make-up counters in the department stores are extremely intimidating!!!!
a WordPress rating system
It’s just dries out your hair a bit and soaks up the oil so you don’t have to wash it when it starts getting greasy. Comes in a can like hairspray, you can get brown or white kinds depending on your hair colour. I like the batiste one
a WordPress rating system
Tamara, I bought my copy online at http://www.coop-bookshop.com.au
Cheaper than retail and free delivery!
a WordPress rating system
I wanted to buy from there too but didn’t have uni for a few days so went into David Jones and asked for a price match. They were a bit dubious, but as the “non-discounted” price is available to the public it is legit and it saved me at least an hour of travelling time!
a WordPress rating system
If I ever have greasy unwashed hair I use hairspray and then comb it through. I find it less messy than dry shampoo. And it’s cheaper.

Other things Zoe Foster taught me: squishface kitties are extremely adorable.
a WordPress rating system
No no. Her cat is not adorable. Seriously people, no more cat stories!

Oh my god Belle why do you say such hurtful things??
Meowbert is delicious and smooshy faced, if anything we need more of him.

I normally don’t even like squishy faced cats, but Meowbert is awesomely cute.

Question:
I have a liquid foundation and a pressed powder (I don’t know if the powder is translucent or not – in the compact it does have a slight colour). My question is, after applying my liquid foundation, do I use a liquid bronzer and finish with my powder, or do I first apply powder and then a powder bronzer?
Please help!! Perhaps this question could be submitted to Zoe?!
P.S. Was bitterly disappointed when I found out Zoe was leaving Primped, but now it’s all good!
a WordPress rating system
Unless it is a very light (texture) translucent powder I’d ditch it completely unless you have very very oily skin and no lines/creases/ etc.
But if your bronzer is liquid too, then powder last. I think.

Zoe mentions a great universal eye colour by Clinique called Muffin but alas it seems to have been discontinued so wondering what she recommends in its place? Thanks!

Ooh I just bought Maybelleine (spelling?) coral crush yesterday on reccomendation from here and freaking love it! Also, nothing beats Natural Glamour Natural Glow bronzer for me, it is amazing and such a staple. Going to try Moroocan Oil now as my hair has been very blah lately.
My fav Zoe tip is rosehip oil.
a WordPress rating system
1. this one is a biggy from my mum – face and chest should ALWAYS be sunscreened – with the invention of moisturiser + spf, it’s now easier than ever. My mum is 51 and does not have a wrinkle on her face (literally), so I’m following that advice, always.
2. when applying fake tan rub sorbelene cream (or any moisturiser but sorbelene is cheap) on your feet, hands, elbows, knees and ankles and you will avoid looking like Mia’s aforementioned oompa loompa (btw I picked up the backwards three tip from cosmo years ago and have never looked back)
3. I’m loving the bright lippies – i don’t have the guts to do the pinks, but the melon colours are great.
4. when removing your eye makeup, hold whatever you’re using (cotton ball + remover or wipes) over your eye for a few seconds then rub in one direction. Holding it there gets the remover working on the makeup before you swipe so you don’t end up scrubbing like an idiot and ripping the tiny fibres described by mia to shreds.
5. Batiste brunette dry shampoo is not only a lifesaver for my hair (which was being put through the ringer w regular washing and styling) but soooo convenient. And you can get it at coles and woolies.
6. If you’re after a great pencil eyeliner you can’t go past covergirl’s pencil from the supermarket. I’ve been using it for years and all my friends use it now too. If you want a great liquid eyeliner that’s cheap – go with ‘face of australia’ stocked at kmart – its got a great thin brush and lasts all day.
And that’s me done
a WordPress rating system
LOVE Zoe (almost as much as I love Mia)!! Inhaled her book and when I drag myself out of newborn baby no 2 life I am so getting some of her product suggetions! I loved her suggetions:
1. Sunscreen under moisturiser
2. Coloured lip stick
3. the YSL pen (like you Mia, I had NO IDEA)!
a WordPress rating system
No idea! I know! They don’t tell you that on the box!
a WordPress rating system
That’s because they’re so prestige they expect you to inherently just ‘know’
I never knew this either, just another gem I’ve taken away from Zoe’s amazing expertise!
a WordPress rating system
Thank you so much for teaching me the triangle trick. I have to buy Zoe’s book now

I have just started using SK II’s facial treatment essence and let me just say it is now my beauty HG. I only wish it wasn’t soo expensive though.

I’m a boy in the office, but I’m gonna share anyway – my hair flops after it’s freshly washed and I like it to be big / messy / bulky. I use a styling dust from ‘Haze’ after I’ve washed my hair and as a result it does exactly-as-it’s-told. I’ve got relatively short hair and I’ve had stylists tell me the dust is for creating root lift and practically refuse to sell me it. Well. It’s good for bulk too. So there! – Matt
a WordPress rating system
I think this is the magic dust Zoe writes about and convinced me to get. I can’t remember if it’s haze – no, it’s Aveda!
Same principal. Takes out the just-washed flops.

I have the schwartzkopf version (as mentioned in Zoe’s book!) and it’s awesome
I have lots of long hair and it defies the weight of my hair and gives it shape around my forehead and the top of my head. Used with some salt spray it gives it that “I just went swimming at the beach” look.

I really like Benefit’s pore minimiser product, at 39 yo it makes my skin look a little “fresher”. Their mascara is good too.
Far & away the best beauty advice was to get my eyebrows shaped properly. I have been doing this since I was 19yo, it makes a huge difference to your facial features. I look at photos pre-eyebrows and shudder……

Zoe had me hooked with her very first sentence in Amazing Face (or was it the very first chapter title?) – Your Face Stops At Your Boobs. It made so much sense to me and also changed the way I use my skincare. I now cleanse all the way down and use my face moisturiser on my neck and chest.

This is off the mark but has anyone tried a clarisonic. I heard there all the rage in the us and have hit our shores. I am thinking of getting one. Thoughts please ladies and gents !!

I have!
I love love LOVE it. It is basically a really good deep clean of your face and makes my skin glow. I have been trying for years to get the roughness caused by congestion to stay away on my chin and the clarisonic has it under control. I also now feel that all my other products are working better as they go on really clean skin. I have tried to see what Zoe thought of it but no luck yet, does anybody know??

After reading this I had to look them up and see what they were all about, now I want one! I’m looking at the Nutra Sonic but still reading reviews. Where did you find the one you ordered? I’m struggling to find Australian stockists for the Nutra Sonic.

i ordered my clarisonic from skincarestore.com.au
they also sell ultraceuticals and the above-recommended serum is currently $65 – bargain!

I can’t think of anything I’ve learnt about make up that wasn’t taught to me by the fruitiest beauty of them all, Mizz Foster. I hero worship her just a teensy tiny bit. It’s not weird, I promise.
1. Yes, you CAN wear red lipstick. Or coral. And so now, I do.
2. The Backwards 3. Saves me from a muddy, Eagle head.
3. A pale, shimmer eyeshadow in the corners on your eyes to make them look more awake.
4. Dry shampoo
Actually, listing all the things I’ve learnt would probably just result in transcribing Amazing Face. You’re awesome!

When I was selling nutrimetics I picked up this tip… and have used it ever since.
When you put on your facecream spread it down to your neck/declotage, other wise you end up at 80 with a great face and terrible neck! Told to me by an 70+ sales lady who wished shed done it years ago…

Thanks for including some cheaper recommendations. Takes all the fun out when make up is too expensive. Anyone know where to get the Ultraceuticals serum and about how much it is? I use rosehip oil at night, what’s different/special about a serum?

Ultraceuticals can be bought from their website or David Jone stores I believe? They’re not cheap – I think the serum is approx $80 – but I have to say, they’re well worth the $$$. I’ve repurchased their products again and again as they, quite simply, work! The serums do end up good value as they last a very long time.

From David Jones.
Not sure of the price but it wouldn’t be cheap, certainly more expensive than rosehip oil.
There isn’t a huge difference except that serums are specifically designed to be used as face serums whereas rosehip oil is more of a general product i.e. can be used anywhere and for different purposes. I am absolutely hooked on Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum which is generally considered the holy grail of serums withing the beauty industry ($150) but I often think I should stop using it and switch to rosehip oil ($20). The price difference is massive and I am convinced the results wouldn’t be that different but I just can’t seem to give up the Night Repair. It is that good!

I don’t agree. Serums usually target a specific problem, e.g. the UC Even Skintone serum, does just that – evens out your skintone and helps your cells turnover meaning less congestion and breakouts (I have the sensitive version of this and LOVE it. Def worth the bucks). I have also used Rosehip oil. While rosehip is great for hydration, plumping the skin and has added vitamins, it is not the same thing. It is worth investigation exactly what you want yours serum to do. Some serums will even help with 2 or 3 issues that you might be having. That is all

I’ve tried a sample of the ultraceauticals serum and it was awesome! I haven’t bought it because I just simply can’t afford it but if I was working full time I would’ve gotten it in a heartbeat – my skin looked fabbo. And while it is really expensive, I was only using my sample every second day and I still noticed a difference in my skin, so I think it would last ages!
Very different to rosehip oil though. As aura says, rosehip feels super hydrating and nourishing, UC eventone doesn’t feel nourishing in that way. If you didn’t use moisturiser on top I think your skin would get really dry.
