Do You Like This Story?

BY ZOE FOSTER

In today’s magazine news, they are still made of paper and feature famous and attractive identities on their covers.

In more specific magazine news, People mag in the US this week published an issue featuring stars without any makeup on. Not those mean pap shots where they are exiting the gym, but deliberately makeup free.

Of course, they still have exceptional hair, and the lighting and the quality of the photos are top notchy, and there is definitely some post-production work going on here, but I applaud these dames all the same.

Why? Because for those of us who love makeup, enjoy makeup, feel better with makeup on, this would be a big deal. Personally, makeup is like clothing to me; I very rarely leave the house without any on.

For these women, who are Real Famous and as such the cause of much scrutiny even when they are fully made up, not to mention the fact they wear shittonne of makeup on set/on red carpets/in photoshoots every day to look the way we know them to look, this nude face bizzo would be even stranger, I imagine.

Zooey Deschanel, for example, has made her big blue eyes and trademark false lashes so much a part of her identity that she doesn’t even have to remove them for her assorted movie and TV roles. (Good for you, Zooey! Even if you spell your name weird!)

Marion Cotillard

The photos certainly prove the transformative power of makeup, because who woulda thunk it? Underneath it all, these women (albeit these very pretty women) look “just like us” before we paint on our goo each day. And surprise! Zooey’s lashes are actually more S than XXL.

As someone living on a small Greek island who hasn’t painted on goo for days, and who probably won’t until I fly on to London in a few weeks, I can see there are definite bonuses to no makeup, namely “time and effort saved applying and removing each day.”

(I realise this is very un-beauty editory of me, but I am in Deep Book Writing Mode and I don’t think the locals give a shit if I have undereye circles, pigmentation or dry lips, plus, I don’t give a shit if they see that I have undereye circles, pigmentation or dry lips, because it’s a bloody miracle if I manage to wear a bra, to be honest.)

YES, I adore makeup, great grandpa’s dentures I adore makeup, I wear it every single day in Real Life, and it makes me feel happy and confident about how I present myself, but it’s also a bit fun to have a break from it for a few grubby weeks. Naturally, I am GIGA excited about wearing it when I start up again, and am prone to going over the top with intense eyes, intense cheeks and intense lips. Cute.

I wondered, though, if any of you makeup lovers were brave enough to do a Zooey, and show us a pic of you with no makeup on in comments?

It’s only fair I go first, so here it is:

I’m not exactly sure what the point of this challenge is, but it seems like a thrilling thing for us all to do on a nothingy Tuesday. I could make something up about us “embracing our natural beauty,” but it would be disingenuous, because my preference is always for some kind of makeupy enhancement, even if it’s just lip balm and mascara.

That said, there is something quite lovely in being honest about what we look like without all our sorcery. (And a big reason I love Snog, Marry, Avoid.)

By all means play with flattering lighting and make your hair look outstanding, but keep away from Instagram and SnapSeed and Hipstamatic and of course, that makeup bag, you rascals.

Come on. DON’T LEAVE ME HANGING YOU GUIZE.

And in case you missed our supermodels without make-up gallery, here it is.

    What a killjoy!
You just can’t win around here. Zoe gets heaps of crap from people about ‘spruiking’ products and making women buy things and featuring too expensive products and packing too much to take away on holidays and going on holidays in the first place, and then when she posts an article that isn’t claiming you need to buy anything and costs you absolutely nothing you slam her again!? Geez…

I never leave the house without make-up. I have terrible acne, and even when I manage to get that under control for a brief period (no treatments have ever worked for more than a few months), my skin looks the same because the scars take years to even begin to fade on my uber pale skin. 4 years ago I had a cystic acne outbreak on my neck, and only earlier this year did those scars begin to go from angry red to pale purple.

If I had nice skin I’d happily go without make-up (maybe just tinted lashes and balm) but as it is I would never feel comfortable leaving my skin bare.

Oh Anonymous, my heart actually breaks a little bit for you because I know exactly how you feel. I underwent TWO courses of roaccutane, numerous antibiotics, THOUSANDS of dollars on ‘miracle’ cleaners, moisterisers, etc and nothing worked.

You know I don’t even have a pic of me holding my first baby after she was delivered because they made me take my makeup off before my operation (c-section) and I was too ashamed of how I looked? Makes me tear up a little bit thinking of it now.

Being pregnant with her threw my skin right off. It was horrific. I endured it for the entire pregnancy and about 10 months afterwards. Of all things though, do you know what has had long lasting effects for me? Pro Active! I kid you not. I never wanted to try it because I thought it was too good to be true. And why only sell on infomercial, surely it can’t be good if it’s not in the shops? But for me it worked, and it saved me from utter despair and deep depression.

I hope with all my heart you find something that works for you. Don’t give up! xx

I’m exactly the same. I hate wearing make-up all the time but I’m too embarrassed to go out of the house without it. I’ve had bad skin since I was 15 and now I’m 39. Sometimes it just makes me want to cry. And Proactiv did absolutely nothing for me. I have tried literally everything. Roaccutane, minomycin, acupuncture, homeopathy, naturopathy, every skin product under the sun — the list goes on and on and on. I now have acne AND scarring AND wrinkles. I envy all these beautiful make-up free faces.

Sav, I was in the same boat. My skin was horrific whilst pregnant and for quite some time after pregnancy. I absolutely hate looking at the photos of me before my caesarean – so much for the pregnancy glow!
So glad to hear that Proactive worked for you. It didn’t for me – it totally dried my face. But what does work (if I take regularly) is zinc and fish oil tablets. This is after four courses of Rooaccutane and countless antibiotics I took over the years. Still not perfect – in fact I just bought some Clearasil.

Hi Anon, I had terrible skin for years and years, and worked out that it was caused by what was going on internally: a stressful job, and not eating well = chronic constipation. I started on a course of (natural, herbal, ayurvedic) supplements to help me, um, poo regularly, and combined that with switching to all-natural skincare, the centrepiece of which was a regular natural clay mask which I mixed with milk, yoghurt or rosewater to make into a paste. I also stayed away from oily foods. After three months, my acne died down. It’s been a few years since I did this and even though I still get the odd breakout, my skin is much improved and even the deep pitted scars have (almost) recovered. Topical lotions only treat the symptoms; it’s important to isolate the cause and treat that. Maybe you’re allergic to something, eg dairy. Maybe your diet is lacking in a certain vitamin or mineral. Maybe your digestive system isn’t working as well as it should. It’s worth looking into these. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Unfortunately I’ve tried just every topical treatment out there, as well as a bunch of different versions of the pill, Roaccutane, antibiotics and quite a few other prescription meds. Nothing worked for more than a few months. My acne is hormonal, it doesn’t get better or worse if I change up my diet, if I’m out of my mind with stress or don’t have a care in the world etc. All the doctors I’ve seen are now of the opinion that menopause is the only thing that will end it.

At this point I’ve pretty much given up trying to find something that makes it go away. Because of the way I scar (and every single pimple I get leaves a scar. Some last weeks, others will never totally fade) even if I never got another pimple again my skin will look ravaged forever, so it doesn’t make much difference. I know how to do my make-up so it barely shows, and I’m just so used to it (my skin’s been like this since I was 11) I barely think about it these days.

Oh my goodness Anonymous you sound so exactly like me. Mine is hormonal too. Diet doesn’t make a blind bit of difference. Everyone’s suggestions just make me feel more sad because I’ve tried EVERYTHING (including specialists who deal with hormonal problems). I cover it up as best as I can but I still get these massive lumps that take months to shift. So. Over. IT. Feeling quite emotional reading all this actually. Yesterday my daughter said to me, ‘Mummy, it looks like you have measles on your face.’ I had to laugh but it made me feel awful too. The honesty of children who say what everyone else is thinking.

Is it just me or does Lily Collins look even better sans make up?!?! Absolutely stunning!

And it bothers me slightly that Paris Jackson is in this album. She’s 14 guys! Why the hell a 14 year old needs a with make up/with out makeup inclusion in this is ridiculous.
The purpose of these images is to see GROWN women in their natural state. 14 year old girls aren’t hiding wrinkles and pigmentation spots when they apply makeup. They wear makeup because its fun and a form of self expression (as do many women, but again, not the point of the images).

Narr, I don’t believe it! Although, I guess we all think the same thing from time to time. I’m 28 and I look at photos of myself from when I was 18 and wonder why I didn’t realise how lovely my skin and hair were back then.

People are the WORST judges of themselves.

As soon as I smile, I get big chipmunk cheeks. I bet we could all name 50 things we don’t like about the way we look au naturel but struggle to come up with 10 things we love. It’s a bit sad.
