BY ZOE FOSTER
In today’s magazine news, they are still made of paper and feature famous and attractive identities on their covers.
In more specific magazine news, People mag in the US this week published an issue featuring stars without any makeup on. Not those mean pap shots where they are exiting the gym, but deliberately makeup free.
Of course, they still have exceptional hair, and the lighting and the quality of the photos are top notchy, and there is definitely some post-production work going on here, but I applaud these dames all the same.
Why? Because for those of us who love makeup, enjoy makeup, feel better with makeup on, this would be a big deal. Personally, makeup is like clothing to me; I very rarely leave the house without any on.
For these women, who are Real Famous and as such the cause of much scrutiny even when they are fully made up, not to mention the fact they wear shittonne of makeup on set/on red carpets/in photoshoots every day to look the way we know them to look, this nude face bizzo would be even stranger, I imagine.
Zooey Deschanel, for example, has made her big blue eyes and trademark false lashes so much a part of her identity that she doesn’t even have to remove them for her assorted movie and TV roles. (Good for you, Zooey! Even if you spell your name weird!)

Marion Cotillard
The photos certainly prove the transformative power of makeup, because who woulda thunk it? Underneath it all, these women (albeit these very pretty women) look “just like us” before we paint on our goo each day. And surprise! Zooey’s lashes are actually more S than XXL.
As someone living on a small Greek island who hasn’t painted on goo for days, and who probably won’t until I fly on to London in a few weeks, I can see there are definite bonuses to no makeup, namely “time and effort saved applying and removing each day.”
(I realise this is very un-beauty editory of me, but I am in Deep Book Writing Mode and I don’t think the locals give a shit if I have undereye circles, pigmentation or dry lips, plus, I don’t give a shit if they see that I have undereye circles, pigmentation or dry lips, because it’s a bloody miracle if I manage to wear a bra, to be honest.)
YES, I adore makeup, great grandpa’s dentures I adore makeup, I wear it every single day in Real Life, and it makes me feel happy and confident about how I present myself, but it’s also a bit fun to have a break from it for a few grubby weeks. Naturally, I am GIGA excited about wearing it when I start up again, and am prone to going over the top with intense eyes, intense cheeks and intense lips. Cute.
I wondered, though, if any of you makeup lovers were brave enough to do a Zooey, and show us a pic of you with no makeup on in comments?
It’s only fair I go first, so here it is:
I’m not exactly sure what the point of this challenge is, but it seems like a thrilling thing for us all to do on a nothingy Tuesday. I could make something up about us “embracing our natural beauty,” but it would be disingenuous, because my preference is always for some kind of makeupy enhancement, even if it’s just lip balm and mascara.
That said, there is something quite lovely in being honest about what we look like without all our sorcery. (And a big reason I love Snog, Marry, Avoid.)
By all means play with flattering lighting and make your hair look outstanding, but keep away from Instagram and SnapSeed and Hipstamatic and of course, that makeup bag, you rascals.
Come on. DON’T LEAVE ME HANGING YOU GUIZE.
And in case you missed our supermodels without make-up gallery, here it is.

Have never uploaded a photo on this site. An trying to do it with my iPhone but where it says “upload image” the choose file button next to it doesn’t do anything? Anyone else using an iphone? Was trying to get into the spirit of sharing

Wish we were all brave enough to do this everyday! Beautiful pic Zoe. Off to bed now x

Oh, sod it. Here goes! Fresh faced and ready for bed.
Such an inspiring post – so many beautiful “Amazing Faces”

I’ve been looking at this post all day marvelling at the beautiful women showing off their make up free mugs, and fuck it, I want to be a part of the action! Here I am tonight, sans make-up AND with prednisone face.
What gorgeous readers MM has! Love this post xx
loading...
I LOVE that you joined us, Maya. We were actually all hanging out together, waiting for you, so this is a great result.
loading...
what a great necklace you have on – where is it from?
loading...
Thanks Chellebelle! People often comment when I wear it, but unfortunately I can never say where it’s from because it was a birthday present from relatives living overseas! Not the most convenient answer…
loading...
Had a shower, washed my face and got into bed.
Knowing it was Tuesday, the first thing I do is find Zoe’s newest pearls of wisdom for the week.
First thing I thought……..
No Way In Hell Am I Posting A Photo On Here With No Make-up On !
But everyone else had the guts to, so here it is !
loading...
It’s been a while since I’ve commented but I thought I would join in the fun. I have no idea where my camera is so this is an old one. I’m the girl
loading...
You suit your pseudonym misssunshine! Cracker of a smile you got there!
loading...
Why thank you!
loading...
just felt empowering to join in, everyone looks so real, warm and genuine…
loading...
I love this! It is a bit sad that the only photos I can find of me sans makeup are at the beach, but here goes. I am the one on the left, to my right are some of my gorgeous friends.
Also, Zooey gets her name from Salinger’s wonderful Franny and Zooey. Everyone go read it now!
loading...
What a great post & how brave are we all for showing our true selves.
I feel more confident (& look less tired!) with make up, but this post has reminded me it’s OK to be natural too. Just look at all those gorgeous pics!
loading...
I’m sure some of those ‘stars without makeup’ were wearing some basic eye make-up? Most notably eyeliner? Or was I imagining things?
loading...
No, you’re right. BOWEN, we’re looking at you.
loading...
Until I “met” the lovely Zoe, I never wore makeup, so it was easy to find a picture. This one is about 1.5 years old.
loading...
Chilling in my pjs, freshly cleansed skin and about to do my nightly routine of rosehip oil, night cream and eye cream !
loading...
You look like Natalie Portman! You must get that a lot.
loading...
So there is no way on God’s green earth that I’m going to post a BIG pic of myself – with or without makeup but can I just say – Every. Single. One of you who has posted – bloody hell, what a gorgeous bunch of women! You all look fresh and clean and just lovely! Honestly, I’m in awe. xx

Fun post. Here is photo just taken sans makeup.
loading...
My name is Kylie, I’m 26 and I RARELY wear make up…and at best, it’s tinted moisturiser, lip gloss and very light eye shadow…This photo was taken a month ago
My skin is naturally pale and doesn’t like most chemicals so I choose not to bother…I rarely have spots or uneven tone…Lucky I guess*…
*To have skin this awesome, I was born with a genetic condition called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome…it is a collagen defect that makes my skin naturally soft (baby soft), smooth and very pale…unfortunately, it also causes a lot of dislocations and pain, as well as other serious problems
loading...
You are beautiful….
And a seal !? What fun !
loading...
Can’t exactly see my face, but I’m in my pjs and I ain’t wearing makeup.. Everyone looks fab
loading...
Sneaky Jen!
loading...
Apologies for the pose. I have no idea what that’s about.
loading...
I had to click on your photo to see it properly but you are CUTE! Love your fun pose and LOVE the colour of your coat on you.
loading...
This is me. Some days I wear make up, some days nothing at all. Today, just mascara. This photo was taken a while ago at the beach (so I can be sure no make-up).
loading...
Maybe it is lame to put two, but I realised that beach photo is a few years old – this is me right now – just scrubbed my face so no mascara.
I find it weird that people are embarrassed or shy about putting their make-up-free photo up. Come on people!
The only thing I am shy about is people linking my normal Mamamia username to my pic so I am going by another name tonight! Sorry!
loading...
Me with Bella, my beautiful dog, also without make-up
I love this post!
loading...
Boxer? I LOVE Boxers!!
loading...
Well then, you need to see My Boxer Pintrest collection at
http://pinterest.com/miche123/i-love/
Unlike me, boxers look good all the time even when dirty and covered with mud, and slime and, you know, doggy stuff…
loading...
I love love love this post, just like everyone else has said!
I use concealer, without fail, everyday. I have a few scars I always cover but generally my skin is okay. I usually play up my eyes.
LOVE TO EVERYONE WHO HAS POSTED THEIR PICTURE – you’re all mega gorgey!
loading...
As well you should. They are outstanding.
loading...
Thank you – I think you’re outstanding!
loading...
Am blaming my 5am starts at work for the bags under my eyes, although they are genetic (but my NP pro palette works wonders!)
And I have shiny skin because of my rosehip oil – are you proud Zo!?
Everyone looks so amazing xx
loading...
Please tell me about this NP pro palette you speak of?
i am the epitome of bags under the eyes!
loading...
This is what I’m talking about. It’s great! http://napoleonperdis.com/aus/makeup/face/concealer/pro-palette-concealer.html

Just got out of the bath and have gooped face up in rosehip oil oil and night cream.. here I am au naturel

loading...
Circles; shmirkles! You are beautiful! What a great complexion.
loading...
Gosh you are a sweetheart

I don’t usually write comments on here but IMO this is a super duper interactive post, my favourite on Mamamia so far. Yes, favourite. Fantastic job to everyone who sent in their photos, go team!!!

Aw! Thankyou!! Much needed wee boost of esteem!

At the risk of sounding creepy, you’re an absolute stunner!
loading...
I haven’t commented on each of your photos individually, but please know that my heart is BOUNCING with glee seeing you all post these gorgeous pictures. Thank you! And thank you once more.
loading...
What a stunning bunch of natural beauties!
Here’s my contribution.
Love your work Zo x
loading...
OMG Chantal! You should NEVER wear make-up! You are BEAUTIFUL!
loading...
Wow thanks so much Rene! Was feeling exhausted after being up since 5am with my 10 month old but your comment has made my day x
loading...
No fringe, no ‘help’ – although I reckon Nate is distraction enough
loading...
Oh, is he ever… Cutest nose in the history of noses.
loading...
I tried to edit my comment below and ended up losing the pic!
Every single one of these photos is gorgeous. Everyone is so much more beautiful than they think they are…I’m loving this post. Except for the part where I join in, which is less fun, but in the spirit of sharing, this is me this morning:
loading...
Great lips!
loading...
You look beautiful by the way Zoe
And Zooey Deschaniel is one of my girl crushes… even if she does spell her name weirdly haha
loading...
Me today… looking haggard after a hard day. Up at 5am to start work at 6.30 (Kindergarten teacher in long daycare). I am freaking shagged. I need a sleep before The Voice starts!
loading...
Far out my brows are in need of some plucking… oh boy what would Zoe say? lol
loading...
Lucinda, we had identical days. High five to you, and your long, rewarding, but ultimately a little draining day! I too, need a pre Voice nap. Maybe I’ll tape it… have a longer nap, and THEN fast forward the ads.
Perfect.
loading...
This is a pic of me and the boys on christmas day last year. I started the day with some powder and mascara, but I reckon I sweated the lot off before lunchtime!
loading...
If it’s good enough for Foster, then by golly it’s good enough for me!!
loading...
Are you seriously not wearing mascara in this pic? If not I am super jealous of your thick, dark eyelashes!
loading...
I’m really not! Thank you so much you’ve made my day! X
loading...
Can’t find the camera, so here is one of me makeupless in Ireland a few months ago (I may or may not have had a few drinks trying to keep up with the Irish rellies
)
loading...
And just because I’m absolutely in love with it, this is my new ‘do! Would have used this photo, but I am clearly wearing makeup
loading...
Fabulous hair!
loading...
I have a reasonable amount of self-confidence, always have, and yet I loathe the idea of doing this. So that is precisely why I will do it.
Every single person who has done this is beautiful by the way. What a gorg lot!
loading...
You are so pretty sans make up!
loading...
Me today – I’ve taken a day off with a migraine because I’m tired, I haven’t washed my hair and that’s all ok.
loading...
You have such beautiful skin! Gorgeous!
loading...
Oh, thank you!
It’s finally starting to clear up after a hellish breakout, so that makes me feel better
loading...
I may or may not now have a bit of a girl crush on you.
loading...
Here’s me naked-faced (all freckles and zits on show hehe) while I was volunteering in Thailand recently. The pic was taken at Baan Unrak, a beautiful home and school for abandoned children and single mothers.

Interesting that I read this post today.
Yesterday I was working with a client in her home. She had raced in just before me and was in her gym-gear, sans make-up. She’s probably around 40 years old (maybe more?). She mentioned that she felt terrible looking ‘so bad’ in front of me. She hates her freckles (she has a lot) and other things that were ‘wrong’ with her.
About halfway through our session she went and showered and put on make-up. I was astounded when she returned with a heavily made-up face. I myself wear make-up every day, so I’m not one to criticize, but she looked SO MUCH BETTER without it!!! Her skin glowed without it, it was all matt and off-colour with it on.
It was a good lesson for me on less is more, and how we often think we look worse than we usually do.
I don’t have the courage to post a photo of myself without make-up. Maybe once my new lightening skin-care routine has been going for a bit longer
My kids are always telling me I look better without makeup – I should listen!
loading...
I am disappointed Paris Jackson features in this- she is 14- of course she is not wearing makeup.
That said – Zoe you look beautiful with and without makeup….and I covet your brows
loading...
Oh I was confused by her inclusion because she is so obviously wearing black eyeliner in the ‘no make-up’ photo.
loading...
I don’t do make-up, I don’t know if I even own any anymore, actually.
This is me with KDot and Jimmy Giggle on Saturday! We had to line up for about an hour at nap time, hence her smiley visage.
loading...
Nice! Gotta Love some Jimmy Giggle!
loading...
Thanks!
My friend was all “Is it wrong that I think Jimmy Giggle is a bit hot?” After I posted that photo on FB, many friends said how hot he is. So um, no.
loading...
HILARIOUS
loading...
Oh god I’m glad it’s not just me. I think he’s a bit delicious. I look forward to he and Hoot come nightfall!
loading...
Kris, you are all spunks! You should change your profile pic cause we can’t see you behind those dark glasses.
loading...
Every single one of you is gorgeous, we all rely so heavily on make-up when obviously there are so many stunning, unusual and feminine women out there. Thanks all for being so brave and sharing your pics. Here is mine….
loading...
GO LOLLI, GO! (Terrific brows, by the way.)
loading...
Thanks Zoe, I thought the exact same thing about yours.. Keep up the amazing, inspiring and fun writing.. x
loading...
Gorgeous Lolli!
loading...
Thankyou, I was nervous to put a pic up… x

I used to be a makeup addict. I literally would not leave the house without a full face of slap. Then I started working from home. No makeup – great! Cut a full 40 minutes from my morning routine. I noticed my skin improved. Part of the reason I wore so much foundation and concealer was due to bad skin. I decided to switch to entirely natural vegan bath and beauty products. No more silicone-heavy hair products, no more harsh surfactants, or alcohol-based toners and perfumes – just natural oils, soaps, flower waters, etc. In my entire adult life I have not had such great skin. Acne totally gone. I also had very noticeable hyper-pigmentation that I consulted several dermatologists about. None of their harsh treatments worked, in fact some made it worse. But gradually, over the course of a year or two into my switch to all-natural products, the pigmentation faded completely (I told the dermatologists it wasn’t sun-damage!!). I’m in my mid-40s with hardly any lines or wrinkles, and only wear makeup when I’m going out somewhere special, and then it is very much a less-is-more approach (which I think is more flattering for my age group) and of course, all natural. Natural products use pure, high-quality ingredients and cost a fraction of the artificial, animal-tested concoctions you buy over the cosmetics counter too!
loading...
Hi Jen
What products do you use?
loading...
YAY!
What are some brands you recommend? I especially would love a new mascara, lipstick and foundation!
loading...
Would love to see a photo of Jen
loading...
I’m a real makeup girl, but it’s so nice to know that celebrities aren’t any different to us a la naturale!!
loading...
Averil, that bouncy skin and even tone will keep you looking gloriously youthful until you’re 189.
loading...
You know, I just realised that we never compliment each other when we are sans makeup, only when we are all done up. But posting my pic today have given me such a confidence boost!
loading...
You look aaamazing! i am jealous!
loading...
Thankyou! Maybe after today I won’t be so hesitant to step out of the house without makeup on.
loading...
Beautiful! You remind me of Amanda Seyfried! xx
loading...
Thankyou so much! Who’d have tHought I’d feel this good after a daggy day at home with the kids cleaning the bathroom!
loading...
Here you go, Zo:
loading...
What a friend!
What a supporter!
What a smile!
(Apologies all for my many peppy comments, I am just so thrilled and gobsmacky at how many of you are posting your makeup free pics. Says a great deal about the standard of dame on MM.)
(And how much attention you all pay to your brows.)
(Which, as you can see, is a great choice, because good brow shape frames your face even when you are sans makeup.)
loading...
Well, I’m pretty much the opposite of all of you. I’m 40 and don’t wear make-up. I try to wear it, but i end up feeling uncomforable and like a fake, so I wash it off. Sometimes if i feel daring I wash off all but the mascara. I’m average looking and am happy being plain/average looking. With make-up, i feel as though I’m pretending to be better looking than I really am. I feel like a fraud. I’d rather be average plain me, than look like someone I am not. Yes, I know, I clearly have ‘issues’.
loading...
I don’t know. I’m like you but don’t consider it an issue. This is what I look like. I had my makeup done last week to have maternity photos done and felt really conspicuous walking around made up. A fraud is exactly right. Sometimes I will put on make up to try and talk myself into the headspace of a night out where I know I’m going to have to play a role not entirely myself.
loading...
You still look gorgeous Zoe!
Even though I follow your blog posts religiously, and have done so since I discovered Primped a few years back, I rarely wear make-up during the week! As a sports science student there is no point in me wearing make-up that I’m just going to sweat off later and sometimes I just can’t be bothered…that sounds so bad and lazy but it’s true! That said, when I do make the effort on weekends, or special occasions during the week, I love it for both what make-up does for my physical appearance and for my confidence as well
loading...
You don’t need makeup Georgia – you are gorgeous with beautiful skin!
loading...
Agree, and as usual, props to the brows!
loading...
Wow, you are gorgeous!!
loading...
Hello world! Since my day-to-day routine consists of mascara, eyeliner (and lipgloss & tinted moisturiser if I have a little more time), this shot is not much different to my ‘made-up’ days…which is funny since I’m a closet beauty product junkie!
Love all the gorgeous faces
loading...
I TOO love all the gorgeous faces, ktgirl. I didn’t expect even one, to be honest.
loading...
You didn’t expect anyone to post their photos, or you didn’t expect anyone to be gorgeous?
loading...
