zoe nails 2 380x252 8 new nail trends to try.

Zoe modelling her nail polish

BY ZOE FOSTER

Can you even remember a time when we didn’t know specific nail polish colour names, or which colour Chanel had sent down the runway on their models, and therefore would be the Biggest Nail Colour of The Season, or what Shellac was, or how to make our nails look like little tuxedos?

Me either, and quite frankly, I don’t want to.

Why would I when we are in the heady midst of the fingernail uprising, and the epicentre of the nail lacquer renaissance of nail lacquer? It is time to shine, sweet little hand talons! (Or matte! Or crackle!)

I personally am an enormous fan of nail trends and fashion, and in a sentence I thought I would never write, nail art. If you aren’t with me, please take a moment to peruse some this fantastic compilation of Instagram nail awesomeness, and then tell me you aren’t impressed, and maybe just a little bit thirsty for some fun nails of your own:

Some simple suggestions to get a dame on her way:

1. Stickers and add-ons: Pop on a tiny sticker or some glitter or tiny beads sprinkled over your top coat, and then sealed in with another layer of top coat.

2. Modern French: Do a clear base, with a coloured tip. I like pink or black. This is particularly sensational with Shellac/GelColor etc.

3. The Reverse Moon: Paint the small “moons” of your nails (down near the base) one shade, and the rest of your nail another. Cream and black looks very posh.

The Modern French

And have a sniff around the chemist, Priceline and online, a lot of brands have nail art stuff to help you play better, like Orly’s Instant Artist, and Sally Hansen’s Salon Effect decals. (Also, don’t be scared to ask the staff at your nail bar if they can do something cool – whenever I ask they are THRILLED to do something a bit more creative than “just Bubble Bath thanks.”)

Should you be the type of dame who prefers/needs/demands to be on trend, here are some of the stand out shades to go for this year:

4. The New Nude: Wedged between that plain sheer pink you always use, and the taupes that were huge a few seasons back, lays the new neutral. Try to find a tone that matches your skin tone, or think almondy-beige-flesh tones.

Try: Deborah Lippmann in Naked, OPI Did You ‘Ear About Van Gogh?

5. Bright 60s shades: Like a swing-dress, but on your nails. Think bright oranges and hot fuschias. Try: Essie, OPI A Roll in The Hague, Orly Passion Fruit.

6. Robin egg blues, pistachio greens, soft lilacs: Beyonce has single-handedly re-ignited blue nails, but country-kitchen-soft-greens and gentle lavenders are also delightful. Try: Essie Navigate Her, Chanel Riva, Orly Jealous Much?

7. Embellishment: Think glitter, sparkles, 3D effects like sprinkles.

Try: Sally Hansen salon effects in Blue Ice, Butter London tart with a Heart.

8. Navy is the new black: PHEW. We almost had to revert to black as the new black. Thanks, navy. Try: Chanel Blue Satin, OPI Russian Navy, Dior Tuxedo.

If you think this is all ridiculous, and you’re quite happy with no polish, or your simple French manicure, that’s perfectly acceptable, of course it is, and I’m sure your nails look terrific just the way they are.

Just know that being fancy or on trendy with your nails is the FASTEST, and CHEAPEST accessory you can use to fool people into thinking you are in fashion and “up with it.” (I’d know; I’ve been doing it for years.)

Now, because I SO enjoyed the interactivity of last week’s no-makeup post (I teared up seeing all of your photos and lovely comments, you gorgeous bastards), and I know that I certainly take photos of my manicures when they are looking excellent/interesting, I hereby leave the floor open for you all to show off your hard work (or the hard work of your manicurist) below, so that we marvel at your talent and creativity and pile you with compliments, and then maybe copy you.

I am wearing the only polish I packed right now, so I’ve dug up a few archived snaps to get the boat rowing, such as this one: reverse moons with gold and burgundy.

I LOOOOOOOVE nails! I have soooo many nail polishes I’ve lost count, lol. For the last six months I have been getting my nails done with a super short acrylic. This means they are always neat and uniform. I love bright nail polishes (but also often embrace the darker shades) and have tried the OPI nail art stickers and didn’t really like them (I think my acrylic nails were a bit too curved which made the stickers crease).

Yesterday I got my nails done and I had chosen a gorgeous colour from the salon called OPI Pink Flamenco, but unfortunately they weren’t dry when the salon closed and I severely smudged them. All good, as I went home and used one of my many other nail polishes and am now sporting OPI’s Flashbulb Fushia.

Hi Mandymoo, do you do the shellac yourself? I have only had it done in salons with mixed results. I love it but it doesn’t always last very well. If you do it yourself, do you have the lamp etc and what brand do you use? Your nails look great. I love the shape.

        Hi Daisy,

No I don’t do it myself, I’m horrible at painting my own nails which is why I gave up & started going regularly to the salon to get them done. It does cost $$ but the shellac lasts me 4-5 weeks so I justify it to myself! I have had mixed results, some places say they use ‘shellac’ but the bottle is actually called ‘gellish’ which they tried to tell me was the same but it was dull as soon as i left the salon & it chipped that day. It was one at Chatswood Westfield near dick smiths…i haven’t had any luck there. But I found USANails on military rd at Neutral Bay is now the only place I go – always brilliant, & they’ve played with all the colors & now you can get like 72 different shades of shellac…. I think that doing it at home and getting the UV thing and the colours would be a waste of time & effort when for $40 I can get it done & chill out….but that’s me!

Love that pink and the pinky nail. I did this a few weeks ago with OPI She’s Golden (a metallic white with gold shimmer) and Swimsuit…Nailed It (a dark metallic blue). Wish I’d taken a photo

Ooooooooh- nothing puts a pep in my step like having shiny, pretty nails!

I do shellac myself at home, and am utterly obsessed! It’s relatively easy (takes me around 20-30 minutes to do my nails), and lasts up to 10 days.

Yesterday was a gorgeous slate gray, today is a deep deep plum.

I use CND shellac or gelish color, CND shellac base coat and top coat. I purchase them all on US eBay, and bought the lamp on eBay too. Outlay was approx $160, but I can now do my own shellac manicures and pedicures from home. Well worth the initial cost!

i love love love getting my nails done. Never used to do it in QLD but since moving to Sydney (& finally being able to grow my nails long & strong!) i’ve totally hit the mani-pedi with full force. It used to be fortnightly….but now with Shellac i’m getting them done about monthly-sometimes 5 weeks. And it stays so shiny. This one is ‘bleeding’ pink love :)

  7. May!

Whenever I do my nails they looked chipped and manky for longer than they ever look good! Would love to try shellac but way too much of a tightarse.

There is something lovely about having your nails done nicely though isn’t there? I’m so not a ‘nail art’ person but I absolutely LOVED the gallery. Especially all the fruity ones and the cute animal ones! The cats! The french fries! Fricken adorable.

I LOVE nail polish & I spend a lot of hours on my nails:

    http://emmandowl.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/for-while-now-i-have-had-small.html
    http://emmandowl.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/week-of-nails.html

I am constantly getting those questions from my workmates & other friends – when did you have time to do that? How many times a week do you change your nail polish?
The answers are: Before bed, and 3-4 times.

I feel like if i have crazy coloured nails, then i don’t have to feel bad about wearing a white t-shirt and jeans to work.

Oh, and a little tip for those wanting start a nail polish collection: http://www.nailetc.com
They used to be the place to go to stock up on OPI, but although they don’t stock my favourite brand anymore, they are still the place to go for cheap China Glaze, Essie, Orly & CND.

Love ya Zoe, but I just don’t get nails. You end up chipping them and its more trouble than its worth. I like my nails short and clean. Spend so much time on hair and makeup, somethings gotta give, and that s a manicure!

  10. Yeah!

I have a great nail trend: It’s called keeping them short and doing absolutely nothing.

Heh heh, just being cheeky. Love your work, Zoe, but I’m WAY to lazy to fuss over my nails.

Love nail polish and playing around with colors, with each of my three kids that was the one thing I had to have, pretty nails for the labour!! And with my last one (totally painful) do was gripping on to the sheets and thinking oh man I’m ruining my nails!! Oh was going to put picture of nails at the moment but can’t work out how to include picture, I have Sally Hansen commander in chic, love it!
