zoe nails 2 380x252 8 new nail trends to try.

Zoe modelling her nail polish

BY ZOE FOSTER

Can you even remember a time when we didn’t know specific nail polish colour names, or which colour Chanel had sent down the runway on their models, and therefore would be the Biggest Nail Colour of The Season, or what Shellac was, or how to make our nails look like little tuxedos?

Me either, and quite frankly, I don’t want to.

Why would I when we are in the heady midst of the fingernail uprising, and the epicentre of the nail lacquer renaissance of nail lacquer? It is time to shine, sweet little hand talons! (Or matte! Or crackle!)

I personally am an enormous fan of nail trends and fashion, and in a sentence I thought I would never write, nail art. If you aren’t with me, please take a moment to peruse some this fantastic compilation of Instagram nail awesomeness, and then tell me you aren’t impressed, and maybe just a little bit thirsty for some fun nails of your own:

Image via blognailedit.blogspot.com

Some simple suggestions to get a dame on her way:

1. Stickers and add-ons: Pop on a tiny sticker or some glitter or tiny beads sprinkled over your top coat, and then sealed in with another layer of top coat.

2. Modern French: Do a clear base, with a coloured tip. I like pink or black. This is particularly sensational with Shellac/GelColor etc.

3. The Reverse Moon: Paint the small “moons” of your nails (down near the base) one shade, and the rest of your nail another. Cream and black looks very posh.

zoe nails 3 380x275 8 new nail trends to try.

The Modern French

And have a sniff around the chemist, Priceline and online, a lot of brands have nail art stuff to help you play better, like Orly’s Instant Artist, and Sally Hansen’s Salon Effect decals. (Also, don’t be scared to ask the staff at your nail bar if they can do something cool – whenever I ask they are THRILLED to do something a bit more creative than “just Bubble Bath thanks.”)

Should you be the type of dame who prefers/needs/demands to be on trend, here are some of the stand out shades to go for this year:

4. The New Nude: Wedged between that plain sheer pink you always use, and the taupes that were huge a few seasons back, lays the new neutral. Try to find a tone that matches your skin tone, or think almondy-beige-flesh tones.

Try: Deborah Lippmann in Naked, OPI Did You ‘Ear About Van Gogh?

5. Bright 60s shades: Like a swing-dress, but on your nails. Think bright oranges and hot fuschias. Try: Essie, OPI A Roll in The Hague, Orly Passion Fruit.

6. Robin egg blues, pistachio greens, soft lilacs: Beyonce has single-handedly re-ignited blue nails, but country-kitchen-soft-greens and gentle lavenders are also delightful. Try: Essie Navigate Her, Chanel Riva, Orly Jealous Much?

7. Embellishment: Think glitter, sparkles, 3D effects like sprinkles.

Try: Sally Hansen salon effects in Blue Ice, Butter London tart with a Heart.

8. Navy is the new black: PHEW. We almost had to revert to black as the new black. Thanks, navy. Try: Chanel Blue Satin, OPI Russian Navy, Dior Tuxedo.

If you think this is all ridiculous, and you’re quite happy with no polish, or your simple French manicure, that’s perfectly acceptable, of course it is, and I’m sure your nails look terrific just the way they are.

Just know that being fancy or on trendy with your nails is the FASTEST, and CHEAPEST accessory you can use to fool people into thinking you are in fashion and “up with it.” (I’d know; I’ve been doing it for years.)

Now, because I SO enjoyed the interactivity of last week’s no-makeup post (I teared up seeing all of your photos and lovely comments, you gorgeous bastards), and I know that I certainly take photos of my manicures when they are looking excellent/interesting, I hereby leave the floor open for you all to show off your hard work (or the hard work of your manicurist) below, so that we marvel at your talent and creativity and pile you with compliments, and then maybe copy you.

I am wearing the only polish I packed right now, so I’ve dug up a few archived snaps to get the boat rowing, such as this one: reverse moons with gold and burgundy.

    Massive nail envy here, ladies!!

I used to LOVE getting my nails done – I had acrylics for about a year and I collected a huge amount of polish for prettying them up. My natural nails are bitten/picked at, flaky, soft and ridgy! (ie, screwed)
After a few years of nothing, I got gels done (Bio Sculpture) which I loved but it was not quite tough enough and I would pick at it sometimes too.
It became too much of a financial commitment and I decided to spend more on skin care and hair care and forget the nails.

I had Shellac done once before we moved o/s and loved it.

Hilariously, my partner HATES painted fingernails but knows not to say anything when I had them painted. Now I kind of can’t be bothered… one more thing to maintain!

To those of you with the skills to paint your own nails and apply nail art, I salute you! Gorgeous! But just not for me and my chunky, chubby hands!! x

I like wearing nail polish but I generally avoid it because my nails get stained and brittle – even when wearing a base coat and only keeping it on for a few days. Any tips, ladies?

Thanks for the pretty nail inspiration Zoe! Here are my sparkly nails for today (I used OPI Mimosas for Mr & Mrs and Sally Hansen Big Money)

hey kittens! whenever I get acrylics and then try and go back to natural nails I always get gels put on. they don’t damage your nails like acrylics do, but create a false hardness so they dont break all the time. bio sculpture is the best I’ve tried. good luck!! xx

I know what you mean, I used to only think Nail art was tacky, but it’s been so much fun to play with, and so long as nails are short I think it can be really chic.

d’oh! saw this post just after I cleaned off last weekend’s party nails! (slate grey metallic+ hololgraphic topcoat with silver glitter tips and silver ring finger)

nails are my favourite thing to experiment with, I am obsessed! spots, crackle, glitter, holographic, they just make outfits a little more interesting.

my favourite neutral at the moment is the gold polish australis released last season. the gold isn’t super ‘gold’ (if that makes sense) and it’s more matte than shiny, so it’s a little more interesting than a stock-standard neutral but not as out there as something bright or metallic. love it!

This may show how out of it I am with nails, but I really don’t like the squared off nail look.
My nails break simply because of being wet frequently (they grew really long when I was not doing housework due to surgery) and I’m really not supposed to have long, painted nails anyway, for work (nurse).
I’m seriously not into gel/acrylic/shellac nails. Apart from the fact that shellac makes me think of what we used to paint on the soles of my daughter’s pointe shoes, you can get terrible thrush from acrylics etc. I got thrush from using nail varnish strips too often.
If I put nail polish on in the morning’ it’s starting to flake off by the end of the day. Sigh.
I do love nail varnish strips though. They last a lot longer than ordinary nail polish. I bought some really groovy magnetic nail polish. Put it on and hold the magnetic strip over the nail. Wa lah, stripy nails.

How did that person get all the CATS on her nails? THAT IS SO CUTE.

Meanwhile, I’ve got nothing to show because I cannot apply nail polish at all well. I am happy if I can get one colour on my nails semi-neatly, and often have to do a lot of clean up with a cotton bud and remover afterwards.

99% of the time, I don’t do my hands.

And I’m so lazy with my toes that I will paint them recklessly and hope that the messy bits just flake off in the swimming pool when I do laps twice a week.

    I’m a disgrace. :(

Anyway last weeks nails were: Hot Pink with Cyan Sparkles

    GD Star Rating

    • Ellen

A fairly easy way to do it is to paint your whole nail the colour that you want the little moons at the base of your nail to be. Wait for it to dry completely, then stick one of those circular band-aids (the ones they put on after you’ve had a needle) over the base of the nail and paint the exposed nail in the second colour. You have to be careful not to get too messy and paint over too much of the band-aid, because of the little holes in them, but they work a treat.

As a compulsive nail biter (they are horrid, truly horrid. bitten to the point that the soft under-nail protrudes from the hard top-nail)) this makes me want to cry! Oh for beautiful nails! I bite so short that I can’t even have acrylic or gel put on the top, not enough nail to stick to.
Time to find a new bad habit I think…

    • Anon

This was me too, mummamoo – I would literally have about 1mm of hard nail. Rather than just setting myself the task of “no more biting!”, I set myself a 30 day challenge to stop, and it actually worked. I had bitten them terribly since I had teeth (so about 30 years), but now I can’t wait to try out some of these funky styles. You can do it! :D

    • Kylie2

I have been a nail biter all of my life. I managed to break the habit by having acrylics put on for a couple of months. I have to carry nail files everwhere because if I get a snag or rough edge I really want to bite.

Perhaps you could try having weekly manicures to remove rough edges & dead skin for a couple of weeks and then having the acrylics put on when they get long enough. It’s expensive but really worth it.

Have tried Revitanail for the past 2 months now and it seems I am one of the unlucky ones whose nail have become much much worse using it. They used to grow a bit, but the thumb, index and middle fingers were very soft and prone to flaking however now they are all ragged and flaking dreadfully – at least 1/2 way back to the cuticle, even on what used to be my “good” nails. I’ve had to cut them as short as possible, but they are still flaking. I will have to try the Sally Hansen option someone has mentioned here and if that doesn’t help I’m not sure what to try next…

I change my nail polish every week ( I have a slight addiction, 42 colours and counting!) and my friends think I’m weird to have a feature nail but I don’t give a stuff! Do what you like, damn what others think is my opinion.

I had acrylic nails for years and was one of the only people I knew to get any kind of nail art and crazy colours and people always commented on them. I can’t afford the acrylics anymore so I just grow my nails and do my own and love to experiment!

      I LOVE your nails!

How much is it these days and how long do they last if done well?

Thank you! This was just a manicure at one of those cheap nail places – $18. It’s a week old and I’m taking it off today (starting to chip). I don’t have manicures often – just a treat – my nail polish collection is WAY too big to justify paying anyone else to do them :P

PS everyone into nails – look into transdesign.com – cheapest place to buy the best brands and low cost shipping to Aus :)

Oh my God – your nails START to chip after a week??? Mine start to chip after a day! What in God’s name are you doing to preserve yours?

I love the idea of a feature nail, I’m going to try it.

Mine laugh at my crazy nail art too, Natalia! It doesn’t bother me though because it’s so fun to have unique nails and the best thing is they’re temporary!

When I don’t have time to make pretty rainbows or patterns, I go for scented nails. Revlon scented are my favourites :) Today I have Pineapple Fizz on three nails, and Appletini Fizz on two nails, on each hand… And Pineapple Fizz on my toenails. If I’m just using scented, then I use OPI Bubble Bath as my base colour.

Yes my hands smell like candy and I love it! Happy Friday!

Oh and check out instagram’s #notd and #nailart tags. So much talent on there! Mine are fairly tame compared to some of the people I follow.
