pretty fingernails 3 instant beauty tricks to boost your mood.Occasionally I am asked to defend what I write about (“beauty”) by people who think it’s an exercise in making women feel shitty about themselves because there’s no possible way they can attain the perfect skin/makeup/hair/pore size/fingernail shape/elbow scent society dictates as The Ideal.

I am also asked to defend my choice of lunch (avocado, peanut butter and alfalfa sprouts on toast – magnificent!) but I sense that’s less relevant.

My usual response to these people is to peer at their face judgmentally, and then ask whether they have considered a series of ten $180 resurfacing facials to help with their unsightly skin tone, before making them an appointment with Hans, my hair architect, and attacking them with bronzer made from genuine bronze flakes from the medals of the 2008 Olympics US swim team. (RRP $456,289.)

I jest! I jest. The bronzer is actually produced from the Canadian swim team’s medals.

But seriously, everyone is obviously entitled and encouraged to have an opinion, and I welcome curiosity about my profession. However, I’m not interested in defending an entire industry simply because I write about how to use its wares. It’s kind of like getting upset at someone teaching you how to use your Spray N Wipe, or drive the car you bought.

People are going to buy cosmetics and moisturiser and razors whether I am here or not, and it’s better they know what to do with these things rather than waste the money on something that ends up frustrating or disappointing them.

Put simply, I exist as an interpreter between all of those exciting, confusing, gorgeous products, trends and services out there, and you.

Occasionally I become evangelical about some of these trends, services or products (see: protection, sun) because I’ve seen what they can do and am passionate about their benefits, but mostly I just delight in showing you what’s available out there, and how you can use it in a way that’s meaningful for you. If by “meaningful”, you mean, “makes you feel (and look) better.”

Because that’s what it’s all about in the end, isn’t it? That’s why we clean our face and paint our nails and style our hair – because it makes us feel better than if we didn’t. Taking pride in our appearance isn’t something to be ashamed of: if walking out of the house with healthy hair and skin, and a mood-lifting lipstick and the scent of amber on your skin makes you feel outstanding, then who is anyone to dictate you do otherwise?

Speaking (“writing/reading”) of feeling outstanding, here are some things that always make me feel great, even when I get fined $1800 for not responding to a jury duty notice, even though they sent it to an address I haven’t lived at for four years, and so I had no idea I had been called up:

1. Painting my fingernails a ludicrous colour.

fingernails 3 instant beauty tricks to boost your mood.It is impossible to be grim when your fingernails bellow with vibrancy and colour. Try something frivolous which will enchant you each time you look at your nails, and inspire curiosity and compliments from strangers and friends alike. I am planning a whole post on nail polish (What’s that? There are people whose job it is to save LIVES?), but in the interim may I recommend OPI’s Charged Up Cherry ($19.95) (a blue-based pink suitable for cool skin tones, although I am olive-skinned and wear it to a certain death) or Essie’s California Coral ($8 USD) (a melony-peachy-coral perfect for warmer/olive/dark skin tones.)? Terrific. Thank you.

2. Creating an exhilarating Point of Focus on my face.

Lipstick is the obvious one (try Sportsgirl or the David Jones brand for cheap, arresting, semi-matte lipsticks in flamingo pinks and sweet baby corals and bombshell reds), but has a lady ever considered doing something wild on her eyes perhaps? Like a slash of turquoise or gold eyeliner along the upper lashline, or even – gasp – along the lower lashline ONLY, teamed with mascara and subtle lips to keep things modern and grown upsy? Of course, metallics are very big this season, so an eyelid full of bronze or gold or pearly silver is certainly not out of the question, and in fact, might just be the answer to the question, whatever that question was.

lips 3 instant beauty tricks to boost your mood. Finally, I beg you to consider the cheeks. Such a look of health and freshness and radiance can be achieved by making the cheeks the focus, yet few seem to recognise this. I recommend the new “sporty cheek,” made popular on the runways in September, which is neither bronzer, nor blush, but a terracotta-peachy-coral-apricot shade that shimmies delightfully between the two. It’s very pretty with a ponytail and no other makeup save for mascara and a face of healthy-looking, fresh foundation. (Try a liquid foundation with a touch of liquid illuminator – such as Revlon Age Defying Spa Face Illuminator – mixed in.)

3. Doing someone else’s makeup.

Sadly, while I have at least five eye shadow palettes and 822 lipsticks, I have only one face. So, sometimes I accost nearby females and use these products on their face. They seem to enjoy being adorned with surprising new shades (“lilac eye shadow, how daring!”) and textures (“LIQUID bronzer? Exactly what brand of sorcery IS this?”), and I seem to enjoy seeing my friends and family try something new, and be mistaken for extras from a Pitbull film clip.

Obviously –and this almost goes without saying -I also love the occasional spray tan. I love them for the same reason we all do: the alluring scent, and the browny-orange marks on my sheets.

Yes! Turquoise eyeliner! Really!

I often get asked to to justify my love of fashion, red lipstick and makeup as a feminist who works exclusively on body image and women’s representation in the media through language. Red lipstick makes me feel powerful – like I can take on the world! I love playing with make-up, and my new favourite eye palette is Urban Decays Naked Palette (am currently salivating over Naked 2!!!).
But my three things to making you feel awesome are red lipstick, liquid eyeliner, and a smile. I have this book where i write compliments i receive. it sounds trite I know. and also makes it look like i need validation from outside sources – but im currently in recovery from an ed (yes, feminists can have eating disorders. But, i developed mine long before i read The Beauty Myth), and somedays are bad – so reading compliments that other people have taken the time to give me puts a smile on my face =). This in turn makes me feel awesome. Which makes me look awesome. And then I save the world. =D

Zoe, please do a video or article about matching colours to your skin tone. I’m very pale with freckles and find it so difficult to choose nail polish and coloured wardrobe pieces that don’t make me look paler or bring out the red in my skin. And I’m sure there are many others just like me!

Zoe (or anyone), do you have any advice on how a lady can stop biting her nails? I bite mine ferociously. Want to play with nail polish but cannot due to crappy chewed nails. Help.

1)pretend you have a young child and ask a pharmacist to sell you the stuff for kids who bite their nails and suck their thumbs… StopandGro or something similar.
      2) put it on your nails. (eewwwwwww grooossssss tastes soooo disgusting)
      3) (optional) deal with anxiety problem by developing another stress habit which is not self destructive, ie actually i can’t think of anything
      4) buy LOTS of new nail polish as a reward for your changed behaviours!! YAYAYAYY

The only thing that’s worked for me is painting my nails, yes even when they were shitty and short. Having nail polish there made biting unappealing I guess because I stopped.

    Dear Zoe

I love your posts. They always make me smile. When you do your special post about nail polish, can you please tell us about Shellac? What is it? Where do you get it? Is it hard to remove? Is just too potent/chemically… and therefore maybe not so good for us to use often?

My toenails are always brightly painted. My fingernails not so much because the polish just peels right off… even with a base coat and a top coat. Grrr…

Shellac is pretty amazing. My nails always chip really fast and when I’ve had it done it lasts for a least 10 days without any chips :) It’s not crazy expensive- I get mine done as a cheap nail place near my house- they charge $15 for a normal mani or $40 for shellac (just to give you an idea).

You can buy special wraps to take the polish off, or have it done at the nail salon.. or just do what I did- put nail polish remover (with acetone!) onto cotton wool, press it against you nail and wrap the tip of your finger (with the cotton wool still on your nail) in foil and leave for 10 minutes and hey presto it’s all gone :)

Not sure about how horrible it is for you – I tend to get sick of my nail polish after a few days anyway so I don’t get it applied all that frequently…

Great post Zoe! I am well and truly jumping on the nailpolish and lipstick bandwagon, after many years of thinking both were way too much trouble, (mother of two young kiddies) too fussy and made me look like a hooker (the lipstick part that is, I have big lips). I am totally loving the Butter nailpolish range, a little less toxic than your usual and I bought one lovely blue based red lippie from minerelle.com.au which I find can also pass for pink, a bit darker pink etc (I just dab the tiniest bit on then go with some balm). Depending on how dramatic I want to go. It’s fantastic! I feel about ten years younger and it totally brightens up my day and my look. And that is worth something for sure!

    Nailpolish- oh dear.
I seemed to have fallen out of the habit of applying nail polish, and 2 weeks ago decided it must be done! To find my supply of polishes to be seperated/thick/smelling funny.
So I’ve spent 2 weeks trying to decide on which China Glaze nailpolishes I should get- and I believe I’m up to about 18??? I cannot afford 18 *LOL*
But wow they have some gorgeous colours!
Love wearing bright eyes and sometimes a bright lip!
Though I do have bags of makeup- 3 in the bathroom, 2 tool boxes full in the study, 1 large box full and 3 other bags near the large mirror. I have always been slightly addicted, used to be a makeup artist, and remember getting in trouble for wearing yellow eyeshadow to church when I was 10 hehehe

I love reading Zoe’s posts – they are so funny. I’ve never read beauty posts, but I enjoy reading these and I’ve bought Zoe’s book. I am going to buy myself a few things for Christmas!

I do paint my toenails in bright happy colours…I keep my fingernails short (so I don’t scratch my baby) so I’m not sure if bright colours would look good on very short fingernails.

I used the hair straightener on my very thick hair yesterday (it takes me half and hour to do half my hair!), but today I feel great having it up in a bouncy ponytail – little things really do make a difference. I also give myself home facials with dermalogica products and that really brightens up my face too.

Little things like this do make me feel better after 5am wake up calls..every day!

I am 38 weeks pregnant and have booked in to have a pedicure tomorrow afternoon and if I make it to next week without the baby coming I am going to have a spray tan!
I don’t habitually do either of these things but I just feel like I want to be glamorous in the extremity of pain, there’s something appealing about it the idea of of going ‘oooooooooooh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu** this huuuuuuuuuuuuuurts but look at my lovely toes!’. Stretching out a bronzed leg to admire in between contractions. I can’t explain it but I am doing it.

I am mulling over bright fingernails. I don’t’ paint my fingernails usually so not sure about it. But I am mulling, Zoe, mulling I tell you.

I wish I had a friend who liked doing my makeup, that would be super fun. When I was a teen my bestie was a trainiee hairdresser, she was always trying stuff out on me, it was brilliant.

its to do with being able to monitor oxygen and etc – they need to see your skin under your nails, and if they change its a sign of bad things.
I know they are usually strict about it – but i also know Alannah Hill convinced her OB to let her have her usual red nailpolish even though she was booked in for a C.

I believe different hospitals have different policies, but largely, once you need an anaesthetic, you need to take off the polish. This is so the doctors can see the colour of your nails, which can show if you are not getting enough of oxygen. Just helps diagnose your state of health I think.

Some nail polish makes the Oxygen probe malfunction because it can’t sense through the polish. But it’s not a massive deal, mostly they’re happy for one finger to be nude.

    • I just had to share this pregnancy primping story of a former colleague of mine, when I saw your comment!

For her first baby, she was abit uncomfortable with the idea of the doctors seeing her in the nude, and she wanted a water birth. So leading up to the birth, she purchased a beautiful new designer bikini to wear for the birth (because she didn’t want to be fully naked – no idea why she purchased the bottoms), had a brazillian and a spray tan so she looked and felt good.

The way she tells it now, is that when she was in the water bath giving birth, she was so uncomfortable in the bikini top she just ripped it off and didn’t care if anyone saw her nude – she just wanted the baby out!

I just love that story!! So cute!

Pfffft…who says you aren’t saving lives? My best bud from school had cancer a few years back and participated in one of the hair/makeover programs that were on offer. It made her feel a thousand times better, helped her to feel like she was still herself under all of the chemo and isolation etc. she had to go through. I think people sometimes underestimate how important helping somebody feel good is. After all, aren’t most bullies/evil dictators and general nasty pasties just people who don’t feel good about themselves?…It may be a far reach to say make-up could bring about world peace, but at the very least, after almost a year at home with my baby, feeling like a frumpy mummy, I am now reading your posts and trying things I never have before and feeling good about myself again. I am usually not game enough to venture away from black, grey and white clothes for work (I’m realistically concerned I would frighten fellow lawyers to death on initial impact if they saw COLOURS).

I do however, go out there with bright pink, purple, coral nailpolish. See, I can hide the colour from fellow lawyers behind my impressive looking compendium or enormous lever arch folders of work. Occasionally I wear a coral lippie, but then I get strange looks.

It makes me feel like I’m resisting the boring lawyer cliche and doing something hip and cool (even though I am definitely not hip, or cool, errrr…ever!).

Oh & funnily enough, I just happen to be rocking that exact nail polish hue (the OPI) which I indulged in via a mani/pedi last weekend. Such a cheery colour!

I so agree Zoe, makeup is so fun and makes me feel better instantly! Don’t feel the need to justify what you do ever :)

Just today I’m wearing navy polish (in honour of all the grey clouds here in Melbourne, go away!) and my new favourite lipstick – Kate Moss for Rimmel in ‘no. 12′ which is a great red-orange that everyone compliments on! So just because the day’s grey doesn’t mean we have to be :)

But Zoe! Cue long wail. I would LOVE to paint my fingernails bright colours, or a sophisticated french mani when I’m feeling grown up, but the damn polish will.not.stay.on. Will not. Be it me painting my nails myself, or getting a $50 manicure. Within a day they are chipped and disgusting and it has to come off. What do I do? Anyone?

Hmmm that’s strange my polish only fades/flakes if I don’t use a base/top coat… do you do a base coat beneath your polish? And is it sealed with a good top coat? (I love the O.P.I one)

I agree, a good base & top coat is essential! Plus the top coat will give any colour or brand a fabulous sheeny shine :)
Try to be more mindful of what you do with your hands and nails over the next couple of days. My nail polish was always chipping after the first day too but then I realised that I was using my nails essentially as tools around the house and just generally being very rough with my hands. I now take a bit more care (one handy trick I remembered from my bar tending days is to open drink cans with a teaspoon) and find my mani’s last a lot longer.

        • Alexia

I use the shellac brand base coat and top coat. Then for the colours, I use either shellac or gelish brand. (all can be purchased on eBay) I bought the uv light cheaply off eBay too.

It’s easy to do, and I love that I can do it at home.

My advice- go have it done professionally to see how it’s done, and then your good to go.

I spent around $200 setting up, but that is MUCH cheaper paying to have it done fortnightly.

mine chips on day three as well. I just don’t invest too much in nail varnish- I buy the cheap and cheerful ones. Then when they come off it’s not the worst thing in the world!

These guys are excellent coral-peachy blushes: Bobbi Brown pot rouge (terrific on lips too) in Calypso Coral (mine has been going for over a year and will easily last another) Bloom sheer colour cream in Coy (a pinky-peach) and Illamasqua Lover…. and with a bit of a bronzer, the look is complete.

I popped to the shops at lunch and happened to see several people with unbrushed, almost matted hair. I thought to myself that it is sad that someone would have so little respect for themselves.

Not everyone is into makeup (says the girl who feels underdone without at least 3 shades of eyeshadow on) but grooming yourself indicates respect for yourself that others then follow.

I hear people harking on about the makeup industry all the time, but for me the effort I put into looking good is because I respect myself and want to present myself as well groomed.

P.S. I still can’t do nailpolish, I wave my hands about too much when I talk. But painted toenails, I’m totally on that bandwagon.

Hi, I go out with messy hair all the time. And I never wear makeup. I try to stay fit and healthy and personal hygiene (showering, brushing teeth, reasonably clean fingernails etc) is also important to me but not all the ‘extras’. I just don’t get into, never have. It doesn’t mean that I don’t respect myself, I don’t really even think about it most of the time.

You can respect yourself and still go out of the house with messy hair.. not being perfect 100% of the time isn’t necessarily a sign of low self esteem or no self respect. It could just mean your opinion of yourself isn’t completely invested in your appearance/what others think, and some days you couldn’t be bothered or you don’t have the time. Which is healthy I think, much more healthy than feeling like you have to look ‘done’ to leave the house all the time.
By the same token one could argue that girls who can’t go out in public without extensive grooming and make up on are insecure or vain.
You can’t really judge how other people feel about themselves based on what their hair looks like on one day.

Brightly painted fingernails make me feel grown up and even a little, I don’t know, exotic? I’ve always been an unpainted nail girl because I’m so hard on them! Recently I discovered Shellac and I am a changed person! I go from bright red, to glittery orange, or today’s colour, a natural pale pink (my last was French). These polishes last for at least two weeks – and this is coming from a woman who would have to touch up every second day with my previously favourite OPI.

My skin is the colour of death cooled down so I LOVE a red lippy (blue based to match the “cooled down” hue) to make everything seem a little less fading-into-the-boring-white-painted-walls-that-all-work-places seem to have. And all teamed with a great mascara so that my eyes don’t disappear and a blush (how 80s of me!).
