Spring racing season is here, so I thought it timely to put together a cheat sheet on race day dressing – but with a bit of a difference.
If you thought your races outfit was limited to a flouncy frock and a fascinator then strap on a seatbelt and get ready to have your world (safely) rocked my friends. Read on…
1. Little printed dress: Cute and confident – just like you. Remember it’s the races not a funeral and a bit of colour never hurt anyone, in fact the healing power of colour is well documented in journals and medical textbooks…. okay maybe not but colour and prints are fun y’all. The gorgeous printed dress in this pic (worn by Diana from Mamamia Shopping) is available here.
2. The shift dress: Instead of fidgeting with your dress all day, try something more comfortable and relax. This shift dress comes in at under $100 (hurrah for a bargain!) on Mamamia Shopping and you can get it here.
3. Bodycon: You’re probably scoffing at the idea of wearing a dress this tight to an event full of delicious canapes (not the mentioned champagne). But wait, wait, wait and hear me out.
Fact: A quality, bodycon dress (with a bit of length to it) can do really great things for your curves especially if your dress fits snugly and falls just above the knee. Try this one by Talulah– it’s $189.00.
4. Maxi: It’s not your typical races dress, but hey, spring came so quickly and I haven’t been to the gym in weeks. The appeal of the maxi dress is obvious – a bit more coverage, an easy feminine look, no risk of visible panty line (win!) – the list goes on.
The line between a ‘cocktail maxi’ and looking like you’re going to a ball is a thin one. So heed these words: less is more. Don’t go too over the top with accessories or a dress with lots of bits and pieces coming off it. Pair it with some wedges and make a black maxi much more suitable for day. You can shop this black maxi here.
5. Pants and top: To the races? If he were here with me, Obama would also tell you – Yes, you can.
Don’t go too casual – you can probably let your baggy denim jeans sit this one out, and we aren’t talking about an ‘80s style pant suit here, but a pair of straight leg trousers are totally fine for race day.
Dress yours up with heels and choose a top that’s just a little bit special. Anything with peplum or some fancy embroidery is pretty much awesome, like this one from Talulah. If you’re feeling brave then white on white looks fresh and formal (but you have to be careful around the red wine and stick to sensible light coloured, stainless foods – i.e. no beetroot). Add a sparkly clutch and a fascinator and you’re good to go.
What will you be wearing to the races this season?

It’s significant to note that skirt length should never reflect a night club or cocktail dress. This is unacceptable to the unofficial dress code.

I agree with Charlotte, the outfits above are not sophisticated enough to wear to the races. The races have a dress code for a reason, dress appropriately or don’t attend. Nothing worse than seeing casual dresses and little effort. Also keep yourself tidy, drunk at the end of the day looking like you have been dragged through a hedge is very unattractive. Membership worth the investment as well, then it is a fantastic venue without the major crowds. Happy ‘stylish’ dressing, and remember black and white for derby day, colour for Melbourne Cup and lady like fashion for Oaks!

I totally agree, there needs to be a little more class and conservativism at the races.

I would only consider the shift dress for the Melbourne races. And never pants! It’s the time of the year to pull out all the stops and dress up like ladies. Love this time of year.

And if you’re wearing those god awful mega stilettos make sure you take a pair of jiffy ballet flats in your handbag so you can walk to your cab at the end of the day without having to limp along in agony.

I need some help with races fashion; my husband & I are going to Derby Day. I’m wearing this dress http://www.fashionbasicsonline.com/clothes-shopping/Collections/Dresses_and_Skirts/0660B/Gathered_Detail_Stripe_Dress_Black
but don’t know what kind if hat (or fascinator…) to wear with it – any suggestions for a hat that would go with my dress? I seem to suit lots of hat styles, so I’m told, and would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks MamaMia fashionistas!

that dress is PERFECT for Derby – traditionally the day for black and white dressing. I would go for a small black fascinator, if you’re not used to wearing them these are the easiest to go for first. Try one with flowers or feathers or the dress could even carry something quite plain too.
Have fun!

Personally, I love using red accessories whenever I wear a black + white outfit. Red nails, lips, clutch + fascinator perhaps? Have fun!!

Hi Princessemma,
This dress is versatile enough to be teamed with an amazing fascinator, such as the one at this link

or with a gorgeous statement hat like the one that is at either of these links

I the important this to remember is that to choose something that you ultimately feel comfortable in. Your dress is staying true to the tradition of the black and white or Derby Day, and it’s the exemplification of class to have your hat and accessories follow suite. Coloured nails for sure, but black and white for the rest.
Good luck with your choice and have fun!!!

I think these racewear tips are aimed more for Sydney than Melbourne style. Melbourne women dress sleeky and sophisticated. I couldn’t see myself wearing any of those dresses to any of the major spring carnival events, but I may be alone on this.

No, I agree with you. Prints and shift dresses can be ok but I’m not a fan of the idea of bodycon or maxi for the races.

I tend to agree with you
the shift dress is the only one of the above that I would even conside wearing!

Totally agree – especially if you are going to Group 1 Races (Melbourne Cup ect). Being that casually dressed is unacceptable and by showing up dressed in something like that really takes away from the people who have made an effort to look sophisticated. While we are nowhere near as formal as Ascot, it would be a real shame to lose the grandeur that goes with races. Even country picnic races have higher standards that some of these dresses

I think Sydney is classier than this, at least in the members section.

Great timing. I just bought my first hat for the spring races.
For dresses, I’m loving some of the Lisa Ho prints and there’s a bianca spender dress I am eyeing off as well!
Love this time of year!!!

Any suggestion of where to buy hats or fascinators to go with these?

my tip is to go to David Jones and try on styles – see what suits you.
then hit up etsy – there are so many people on their selling their handmade creations, really love stuff and you can sometimes choose the colour to match your outfit. And its way cheaper!

Get onto ebay there is thousands !!!

And remember that traditionally, spring racing = straw hat.

I did a millinery course with a melb millinery (torb&reiner) & made 3 awesome hats!
